Formula 1 Stewarding Is BROKEN | The Fernando Alonso Podium Saga

Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin have once again proven to be a force to be reckoned with in F1 2023. The Spaniard secured a second podium finish at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix having driven flawlessly throughout. However, the race didn't come without controversy, as he was initially demoted from P3 due to not serving his 5 second time penalty correctly. This decision was then overturned after Aston Martin's appeal. However, it begs the question, should we trust F1 stewards anymore?

I think the FIA have been in utter disarray ever since Charlie Whiting unfortunately passed away. He was actually a competent race director who didn’t make decisions to favour one driver or team like a certain somebody. I can bet that if he was still race director, controversies such as Abu Dhabi 2021, what happen yesterday with penalties would not be happening. It’s great to see someone making a high quality video on a topic that is rarely talked about

Thanks Sangeth. Charlie was a brilliant race director who often got too much stick than he deserved. He was as close to impartial as possible and actually used common sense when judging most incidents.

I understand both sides of the safety car issue. Was it needed? No. However, for whatever reason they were unsure of where the car was so they immediately brought out the safety car. In the recent past there has been a lot of criticism with how they have delayed a safety car, and for good reason. Better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it. Jetta is a track with not a lot of run off or safe places to park a car off the track. If Stroll had to stop the car right away it could have been in a very dangerous spot.

True. I guess it’s better to be safe rather than sorry. In hindsight, maybe they thought also that it wasn’t necessary

@@BMPHF1 Yeah, but even ignoring the safety car issue, it's still another clown show weekend for the FIA.

It means all teams must have an independent department to handle these kind of situations where huge points can be gained (regained) or lost. Good work Aston Martin.
@BMPHF1
@BMPHF1 Год назад
Very good point. Especially for teams lower down the grid. Every point counts.
@sanjayoak4416
@sanjayoak4416 Год назад
I would like to add to this- why the concerned race stewards should not be penalised for such irresponsible decisions. We all know that each point is worth thousands of dollars. This penalty recovered should go to the concerned team as it unnecessarily has to dig deep into proving this otherwise, or else lose points/money.

Another occasion was when Hamilton wasn't penalised until AFTER a GP was over & Podium celebrations done, the FIA had plenty of time to enforce a penalty during the race on him this resulted in Carlos Sainz missing out on his 1st podium , Q. How the he'll do they correct this? Sainz will never feature in any photos or videos whatsoever great job FIA 👏 , have to agree since Whiting isn't stewarding any more the FIA have done a very mediocre job NO consistency at all NONE!, Liberty should be giving the FIA a stern warning that it Must do better as it affects income and support in F1 Or there should be consequences
@BMPHF1
@BMPHF1 Год назад
Yeah the Brazil incident in 2019, Lewis should’ve been penalised there and then. It was clear-cut. Sainz deserved to be up there with Verstappen and Gasly that day. Remember the clash between the FIA and F1 recently? Involving Mohammed Ben Sulayem. The FIA needs some serious work in order to come anywhere close to being considered competent

I can't really pick a side with this one. On one end, the drivers/teams are always barking about the sport needing to be policed more because drivers are getting away with things, and it seems they have taken that complaint on board...four tenths of a second...I'd say they are watching, but then there is of course consistency. This wasn't a last lap thing. This was a "this happened 30 minutes ago" thing and there is nothing worse than stripping a driver of a trophy, after the fact when this could have been settled mid race as it should have been. Problem with blame it on the FIA culture is...okay, we can all do that until we're red in the face, but what have you got to replace them? Who is going to do it better to the satisfaction of all teams/drivers? What entity is that much greater than what the FIA can provide? So far, no one has thrown their hat in the ring or been accepted as any type of real replacement. There were threats of mutiny years ago and nothing came of it. All we can really do is say, do better and they will hopefully try, but we know next race, or the one after that, there will be some incident that has never happened before that will cause a cluster F, that we will once again be having this conversation about.
@BMPHF1
@BMPHF1 Год назад
I understand the sentiment that for those instances that haven’t been seen there being margin for error and a certain level of forgiveness. But on the other hand, it’s important to call out the shortcomings of the governing body for the same reason you mentioned - there’s nobody else who is capable of stepping in and replacing them. If they are all the sport has, then I think it’s very valid to be critical of such incidents. Of course, doing so in a sensible manner.

The penalty was fair, I think. But the fact that they took so long to make a decision is embarrassing. Not the first time they've done something like this. Also I notice that these dumb decisions tend to happen at Jeddah specifically, and yeah some have pointed out that the track layout may have something to do with it. I actually think the FIA's sporting regs are generally well-written. It's the way they enforce it that is below par.

Inconsistency in f1? Tell me more. Prior to the last 3 posting you were far and away more consistent than the FIA will ever hope to be. Speaking on Lewis's Russia 2020 practice starts infringements, did you know charles leclerc did the exact same thing in spa earlier in the year? But Lewis is erm... different. And deserves.... different treatment. *removes tinfoil hat* Cheers buddy, keep it coming.

F1 stewarding is a joke. Decisions dont seem to have any objectivity. They seem to be driven less by racing and more by the narrative and viewership. This is sad as it negates F1 as a fair and unbiased sport. The stewards are headed towards losing all form of credibility and becoming a meme.
