Forspoken: How To PERFECTLY Write An Unlikeable Protagonist 

frey's character might just be the biggest case of "how do you do fellow kids" I've ever seen lmao

I was in a script writing workshop years ago and the instructor broke down how scripts get approved and rejected. Basically there are levels of assistants who vet what actually gets to the director. He broke down how Hollywood over the past decades have really filled those spots with a ton of "people" who only approve "certain" storylines and themes. So if you notice only certain types of characters and themes getting promoted, its likely because anyone who thinks outside the box isnt in position to actually approve anything to even be considered. These type of characters are going to be promoted as long as it takes for the masses to stop complaining about it and just mindlessly watch. Then they can claim it as "Accepted" because we are all tired of complaining..

You're absolutely right about that "self insert" theory. People said the same thing about Mindy Kaling's character in Velma. She's insufferable and awful to everyone in the show, yet all the other characters are obsessed with her. Same principle with Frey. Great vid!

This reminds me of a video I saw a while ago which said this. "If the main character doesn't want to be here, doesn't want to explore anything, why do *I* want to be here and explore this world?" He said that after Frey commented on some structure, and then when told it was haunted/dangerous or something just went "Well, I don't want to be here, let's go away." It works if the gameplay/situation is one where the character/hero HAS to continue forward, and there is no other option to escape/places to go. Because they either get used to it and start thriving, or survive it long enough to get to safety and help *Maybe having a character moment to return to that awful place signaling how they've grown enough to willingly go back to save the day/save somebody or whatever*. But in an open world game trying to encourage you to explore and complete side quests/dungeons or whatever? Having the main character openly go "Ugh I hate this place let's leave now." discourages that. Comparing to say, Aloy (recently played some of Zero Dawn on PC, not entire game but some of it) she never acts like she hates exploring these places. She may not get along perfectly with people, but she's willing to help and even explore ruins and bunkers, if not to help others/make it safer, but for her own curiosity and desire to learn. Having the PC go "Oooh, that must be one of those places that builds the machines, I wonder what's inside/if it can give my override better powers." encourages the player to go ahead and explore. Add that to the "I just moved shit with my mind" moment (I watched streamers reactions to the game, which showcased the entire scene) it felt beyond unrealistic. So she literally just discovered she had powers and killed a monster in self defense, and that's her reaction? And when two more monsters sneak up on her silently, her response isn't "OH SHIT where did they come from!?!" but "COME ON LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOO". Ironic how later she seemed terrified at the dragon, but her reaction to monsters sneaking up is excited.

Did these writers work on the new Velma series by any chance?

What they should have done to Frey's character is actually give her an arc. Her life in New York is shitty, & she's the type of character that I understood at the beginning. So go with that, but when she's in Athia, have her slowly open up her heart & mind to the situation the Athians are facing in their land. Frey saves the day, but she must go back to the real world because she is accepting accountability for the crimes she committed, but she comes back a changed, thoughtful, compassionate woman who is ready to take on life the right way

They should of made an ending, according to your decisions where Lisa shoots you when you get caught by the thugs so you could end the game and get a refund.

I think the emperor’s new groove is a perfect example of how to do an unlikable protagonist. The story makes sure to portray Kuzco as in the wrong and sometimes frames him as a villain when he reveals his plans to destroy Pacha’s village. Pacha, is shown to be the most moral character, starts questioning if helping Kuzco is right or not. Even then, he’s still written to be entertaining and also explain that he was raised by the evil villain. We get to see that Kuzco isn’t heartless and he evolves throughout the movie.

I will defend the gameplay. Its not perfect by any means but it felt like an early build of an Infamous game and I found myself having a lot of fun fighting shit. I wish there were more small monsters other then zombies. But I liked the dungeon bosses more then the main bosses. The parkour was trash though. Frey and the writing of the story were so annoying. Cuff was okay for the most part even though he was a trope and a half. He did have some dialogue that was unnecessary and I also suspected him of being the bad guy from really early.

I am so glad I didn't touch this game when I saw it in the store and thought about giving it a try

The part with Frey and Auden should be when Frey gets metaphorically or even literally smacked and Frey realizes her mindset is wrong. It actually does make sense that Frey would have been taught that she's no good and doesn't belong back on Earth, so she carries that mindset to Athia because that's what Frey was taught, but she should have something bad happen and be shown the loss of her new home to learn that her way of thinking was wrong. This whole thing could have been great if the part with Frey and Auden was the climax and that's when Frey started to change. As a setup it's great, but the authors didn't know to use this.

Now compare Frey and Forspoken's dialogue with Chai and Hi Fi Rush's.

i actually somewhat liked the game but seeing this review kinda opened my eyes 💀💀💀 i disagree about the bit with the gameplay i quite enjoyed it but the story and frey... yikes

I just got it digitally on PS5 about a day ago and I haven't installed it yet, I think I should reconsider and get a refund 😂

Yeah I'm actually enjoying the gameplay. But you are head on with her personality so far. She just continues to be about me me me and a serious asshole to boot.
