When I was a kid in the 1960’s and ‘70’s, there were no rails for protection anywhere. You could walk across the outer walls of the fort or pretty much anywhere at your own risk. One night in probably around 1969, myself and two friends were there staying in the campground with our parents, and we rode our bikes up to the fort after dark. The fort was closed for the day and the iron gates at the entrance were shut, so we sat just outside the gates and smoked a few cigarettes that we’d pilfered from our parents. Some movement caught our eyes down the tunnel toward the gift shop entrance and the three of us stared for a moment in shock and fear at what we were looking at; a confederate soldier standing outside the gift shop looking back up the tunnel toward us. You never saw in your lives three kids get on their Schwinn StingRay’s and peddle the hell outa there so fast, lol. I believe back in those days that the fort manager had an apartment above the gift shop, but I’m still not convinced we hadn’t aroused a confederate ghost.

My 3xtimes Great Grandfather took part in the operations there from August 1864 to Feburary,1865. After which his unit was sent to Alabame to fight in the Mobile Campaign at Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely, Alabama.

I have built a lot of arches in my time as a brick Mason. The way I done it was to use wood trimmed to the shape of the arches. Great video keep them coming, love watching them.

So much military history, amazing to see. If ever you get the chance to come to England you must visit Dover Castle, building started 10th century and as it is built on a cliff overlooking the coast to France it was a very important military building. You would love it E. A. Great video!

My wife and I live in Memphis, TN, USA, and are nearing retirement. We are so ready to do part of Europe, starting with the British Isles. From there, across the northern Med until we reach Israel. I’m stoked at the prospect. I want to stand in the spot Lord Nelson fell and died.

Thank you for the tour! I took my parents to see Fort Morgan in 1989, but it was closed. Had I known how to get to Fort Gaines, I would have taken them there.

The arches are built prior to the soil being placed on top. Wooden Cribbing is built in the arches and bricks are laid. Then the cribbing is removed and finish work is done to neaten up the inside. Once all the stone is dry, the soil is placed on top as impact protection. And it was all slave labor. I don't remember if this is the fort with the blood stains on the granite steps up to a gun deck. It was supposed a famous general who was injured and taken down to the infirmary.
