I’m reading about situations like this now in “Evicted” a book written by Matthew Desmond. Pulitzer Prize winning work. I highly recommend this to all! Although this isn’t a domestic violence situation it still seems to be fitting of the classic devils bargain detailed in the book: “keep quiet and face abuse or call the police and face eviction”. Another case where the police have failed this woman and her community.

It's almost impossible to get an attorney involved in a landlord tenant case in Texas. I've tried many times, even when HUD said the landlord clearly discriminated or otherwise broke the law after an investigation, and it's open and shut. HUD will only investigate discrimination charges, and won't help you with criminal ones against the landlord. There are so many lawsuits going in Texas that getting only a part of your possible $ 20,000 (max) is not enough for lawyers. Forget Civil courts, they are back up over 2 years making it even more impossible to get justice. There is deep injustice in this state for a huge part of the population and it's very much on purpose. Lives don't matter only money. There are lots of laws but no enforcement. I personally am trying to get out of here. It's become a living nightmare.

In September 2021, Texas passed a law allowing residents at least 21 to meet several requirements to carry a handgun without a license, not saying she had one without a license, being that she had a firearm, where did the apartment complex expect her to keep it...this is ridiculous. they said the police weren't seeking charges, which means its a protocol they have to do. probably simply because someone died. i dont think any grand jury in the world would say she needs to go to trial

For the record, anytime there’s a loss of life, even for police, there’s usually a grand jury in most jurisdictions. Even if the grand jury is smoking crack and refers this to trial, the judge would dismiss in pre-trial hearing. Basically, the grand jury gets the facts out onto the record. This woman will be fine. It’s unfortunate that the 14 year old died, but his parents should have stomped his bad behavior and 14 is still old enough to know right from wrong. As a black man, when I was a kid, my parents would always warn me to not mess around on other people’s property or I’ll get shot. That’s just warning me not to walk on other people’s property. To try to break in, the hammer can come down on you.

Has to go through the court. Make sure no one gets away with anything. She is innocent.

No rewarding is a step to far. You protect your home and yourself for your own benefit. You don't deserve a reward or attention for it.

@gianni_schicchi The way I outlined it should explain it. You don't deserve an award for protecting yourself from a threat. The "reward" is nothing bad happening to you. You do not need to be put on a pedestal for protecting yourself. It's an incident that never should happened the assailant never should have created the situation. It's your responsibility to protect you and your own, that being your responsibility does not then entitle you to a reward it's a job you have to do.
