The spirit of rock and roll is rooted in rebellion and revolution. Many songs have become symbols of a generation and their cause. "Fortunate Son" by Creedence Clearwater Revival (also known as CCR) is a great example of one of these songs. It became a symbol of cultural opposition to the Vietnam War as well as solidarity with the soldiers fighting in it. Doug Clifford was the drummer for CCR.
On the drums this song has a simple groove, however, it is played at a driving tempo. In the full lesson at simpledrummer.com, I breakdown all of the fills we hear being played throughout the song. There are short fills as well as longer, more challenging fills to learn.

The drummer in this song plays simple but brilliant

Hard to figure out Clifford. He's very loose and sparse, but also plays with force, but THEN does grace notes and fills everywhere. Also, he used HUGE hats and cymbals.

You’re absolutely right. I think his big cymbals and power translated into a big drum sound with the minimalist mic’ing techniques used back then.

@@simpledrummer Well, I have yet to hear a modern 14" hat that matches Clifford's sound. Also, on the live album cover, it looks like his drums are pretty well mic'd.

I've played this song and listened to this song for years, always knowing there were a few notes I have been missing. I honestly don't think the audience could recognize this, but it has bothered me for years knowing this myself. I can read music on a very minimal scale, however, after finding your video and hoping you played it correctly, I had high hopes. Anyway, after watching you play the song, you literally hit every not (mostly the first Tom) I could hear in the song but couldn't figure out in my own. Thank you so much for playing the song as it was originally played and not adding notes like so many drummers tend to do! I can now play this song perfectly and know in my head I'm playing exactly the way Clifford played it! He always had a way of adding notes you can hear, but can't figure out how he was doing it. At least I couldn't figure it out! Awesome job!!

What a great comment! Thanks so much for watching and I’m glad you got some thing out of this. I am all about trying to re-create the original performance and teach others how to do it too. Again, I’m glad you found it helpful and thank you for your comments.

I tried to play it but could only do it with the snare and high hat and crash symbols, since I’m bad at having the bass drum since I might misplay it- But this helped me get to know some of the notes, so thanks dude!

I’m glad to hear this helped you! As for the Bass Drum, work on it at slower speeds and with a little time and determination, you will get it!

Well that would depend entirely on your skill level as a drummer. But if you have a decent vocabulary of sixteenth note rhythms, the yes, this one should be relatively simple.

Im a VERY new drummer, this is another on my beginners playlist lol. Thanks for doing these. Some songs, the drums are so tucked in the mix it's hard to tell exaxtly what they're playing sometimes
