For the matter of Commander (retired) Vescovo´s cogent discussion of keeping in sober context the present world compared to the fraught upheavals of our not-so-distant past, let me recommend to him the writings of the social anthropologist Steven Pinker, and especially his book, _The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined._ Pinker argues that violence in the world has historically declined, suggesting explanations for this trend. Although I am not the “hyper optimist“ that he is, he makes an inarguable case, and I have said as much, being a student of the maturation of social development.
