Foster & Son traces its origins to 1840. During the Second World War in 1941 Mr. Foster was killed by a bomb at Waterloo station, but coincidentally another shoemaker Charles Chester lost his premises in a direct hit from another bomb. Their leather merchant put them together and he moved in with Mrs. Foster at her 5 Eagle Place workshop, between Piccadilly and Jermyn Street. The firm soon moved to 5 Duke of York Street St. James’s and then to 83 Jermyn Street in 1966. Today 83 Jermyn Street still has the feel of a family-owned business.
Andrew Murphy visits the Hanger Project to teach us about the rich history of the firm and the iconic models that Foster & Son is known for.

So this is how it started. Remember seeing this video but had to watch again....No elaborate measuring like G&G. Just some simple low key measures, a couple of fittings and then voila!

You really should make a video where you show how to NOT care for your shoes(like make some funny video where you show mistakes and correct them sort of that)

Haha. Like by using Kiwi and Meltonian? hahahaha. I thought about throwing a pair off of our roof at the beginning of "how to repair scratched shoes." The only problem was finding a pair of shoes that I'd throw off of a roof... maybe those $50 AE's I bought on eBay.

Kirby, I assume that you are getting yourself a new pair of Fosters. Great! Excellent video, particularly with the detailing of the measurements! We have got to do all that we can to keep alive the great bespoke traditions!

James Milligan Thanks, James. Yes - it's down to just three bespoke shoemaking firms in London: Lobb, Fosters, and Cleverley. Their work is incredible; and it is an honor to be a part of their history of clients! I'm excited to receive these. We just filmed the first fitting in Dallas. Should be able to release by the end of the year.

“What drives people to bespoke” Let’s be real the answer is 99.999999 percent of the time is money lol
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 7 лет назад
SamNettles Not sure. I'd personally think that the money and trouble are the primary deterrents to bespoke. If someone wants to show off their money, they buy Berlutti or Gucci or some other designer brand. Nobody is ever going to be able to identify a pair of bespoke shoes on your feet - so if all one wants is to signal how much they spent on their shoes, bespoke wouldn't be the way to do it.
@TheBassAngler1
@TheBassAngler1 7 лет назад
The Hanger Project it’s not about showing off money but having it. How many people in the United States who are in the middle class can really afford bespoke. The answer is 0.

The Hanger Project Ask these guys honestly how many people who make under we will say 80k a year buy these shoes. These shoes are very much so for very very affluent people.
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 7 лет назад
Hi Sam, I generally agree and certainly don't argue that the shoes are expensive. But it's all relative. There are people clearly in the "middle class" that own very expensive golf clubs because they love golfing! In the same way, there are some people that absolutely love the idea of bespoke shoes and save up to purchase them. I was visiting with one of the last makers from John Lobb while they were passing through Dallas, and he was telling me of a story of a young man who every month stopped by the shop to pay £250 towards a pair bespoke shoes. It may have taken him over a year, but it didn't matter. He really wanted a pair. I really hesitate to get "moral" about purchasing bespoke items. It isn't about what's right and what's wrong. The purpose of this channel is to merely embellish the interests of those that love shoes. We place no judgement on those that don't. And we certainly don't discriminate on price. You'll see tons of videos about Allen Edmunds. But just in the same way someone who can't afford a £30 million Monet can still appreciate can't own and own what he can, someone who cannot afford bespoke can appreciate it while still wearing the AE's he can afford.

pecha deh Actually changed my mind after thinking about it and visiting Fosters in London. Decided to go for brown oxford semi-brogue. It'll be my first brown bespoke laceup. A laceup is a better first bespoke shoe. Allows for better validation of the last design. Cambridge shoes, or elastic-sided lazymans, are too forgiving. Difficult to know for sure if the last isn't perfect.
@pechadeh
@pechadeh 7 лет назад
The Hanger Project agree on that. Bespoke is all about perfection. All the best with the project!

I know many will comment that upper middle class(for me is 80k to $300k us dollars) can't afford bespoke shoes that is bull because many buy from designer fashion houses that average 1k us dollar(with Allen Edmonds quality) or rare sneakers . 4 CL = one classic bespoke shoe. The only hold up for middle class buying bespoke shoes is the traveling to countries where's bespoke

What is the price range for these shoes?
@kirbyallison

Eddie Kruggerr Not for the faint of heart. £3,600 without shoe trees and without VAT. Shoe trees about an extra £600. Consistent w Lobb. Maybe slightly less expensive than them.

I am by no means an expert, but for the life of me I don’t understand the logic of a bespoke shoemaker charging its customers over $700.00 for a pair of shoe trees which are made identical to the original last made for production of the shoe. This to me looks like pure profit. Kirby, if you read this, am I missing something here?
