In this mini-series of 3 videos, Hugo Jacomet and Sonya Glyn Nicholson discuss the different models of men's shoes : their styles, origins, features, and how to wear them.
Good boid you nailed it. Now that I know this precious knowledge, I intend to pass it on to my sons. Sadly, I may pretend that I knew this all along. Hugo and Sonya, thank you for putting this up. FYI: shoe shining very important to pass on to your sons.
Why is this channel not more famous? It should have millions of subscribers b/c this is the REAL/FOUNDATIONAL gentlemen's fashion channel (yes, shots fired). Very informational. More people should know of this. Thanks Hugo Jacomet!
Thank you so much Scott ! Actually this channel is still very young and we are working hard to develop it with quality content. But it's very encouraging for us to read this type of comment. Very much appreciated. Cheers, Hugo
I've been enjoying Sven's "Gazette" channel quite a bit after having just discovered it. This video appeared in my recommend and I'm so glad it did. Subscribed. Thank you Hugo.
I am grateful for the knowledge shared! My son is 5 years old. God willing I am granted life to see my son grow up, I can share this knowledge with him and he can hand it up to his children!
Hugo and Sonya, love your enthusiasm. I'm outfitting my first suit and I got bit by the sartorial bug! As a "young" (30yo) scientist, dress and fashion has never been my strong suit; I've worn cheap sneakers and t-shirts all my life. Can't describe how confident and unexpectedly sharp I looked yesterday at the initial measuring. Never knew I could look this good!!! Love the content and keep it up!
I am passing this knowledge on to my sons and daughters. Thank you for continuing to educate us. This knowledge and art needs to remain alive and shared with the world.

I keep coming to rewatch this video, because the presentation is so dazzling. Pure classy from the presenters to the materials presented. One of the finest talks I have ever seen. Thank You Hugo & Sonya
Dear Hugo, I just bought my first suit. Dark Navy, Single Breast, Half Canvas - Eduard Dressler. And then i bought a pair of Crockett and Jones Connaught 2 with City sole. My first real fine dress. So happy about it. Really appreciate all of your videos, its been a big help
Wow, this has got to be the most detailed satorial channel I've come across on RU-vid. The way you take your time to explain everything is just awesome. Definitely subscribing.
I'm very happy to say that teens (boys and girls) at Jenks High School, in Jenks, OK , have brought the Oxford shoe out of the 1900s. They are wearing Oxfords with boot cut jeans, and all manner of casual clothes, even shorts. I love their look. It makes guys and girls, alike, look so stylish but fun. I personally love Oxfords and own a few pair. It is fun to see people wear them on a daily basis. Good thing you are here to advise!
Once I watched a video from Hugo, I subscribed in a trice. The authenticity and expertise is evident. So many upstarts on RU-vid, passing themselves off as authorities in the fashion world; they even market brands. Glad I found this channel. The insight is pristine.
04:50 Oxford Shoes (05:25 Evolved from Balmoral Boots). 08:18 Brogue Shoes with decorative perforations (Half). 08:30 Brogue Shoes with decorative perforations (Full) and 10:25 with wingtip for long/short foot. 11:46 Balmoral Boots and 12:07 Balmoral perforations line. 12:40 Spectator Shoes, dual color for cricket game and jazzman. 15:00 Whole Cut Shoes, shoemakers craftsmanship test.
Thank you Hugo and Sonya! I'm watching these "shoe talks" with so much interest. I love the precision and generosity of your explanations regarding the different styles and their histories. You two have me thoroughly engaged with this subject and are giving me the knowledge to shop for shoes more thoughtfully and with clearer intent. This is so valuable.
Well said. It’s very thorough information that is much needed. I am a 36 year old female raising a 12 year old son to take care of what he has so he can be prepared for the nicer, more quality shoes and attire.
Thank you, Hugo, for acknowledging something that I would say a very broad topic in a very simple and plain manner. This has been my new favourite series and hopefully, i will learn more from you in the upcoming future.
After watching RU-vid for more than ten years, this is the first time that I want to comment in a video. Very good job, I absolutely loved the thorough explanation and the affable presenters:)
I just came across your channel and I love it! very informative and I always got some talk aways from your videos! Thank you for making the effort to produce such great videos! Lots love from Singapore, Ernest.
This was the most enjoyable nineteen minutes and fourteen seconds I have invested on RU-vid. Monsieur Jacomet and Ms. Nicholson shared their knowledge in a memorable manner. My thanks to both of you.
Je suis tres content! Hugo and Sonya, I am absolutely delighted with this channel! The information here is priceless! This is not only the basics of shoe design and creation and identification, but this is also a formal education on the final things of life! Young people need to see and develop an appreciation of the sartorial arts. I am a new subscriber, and am looking forward two other videos similar to this one! Merci un mil fois! ❤
Thank you Hugo and Sonia for sharing your knowledge about the different type of shoes. Since I started following you, i became more knowledgeable about gentlemen's fashion.
Hugo and Sonya, thank you for this excellent video! The first 4.5 minutes provides a great perspecitve on today's market and the balance of the video covers oxfords nicely. Seeing the handsome wholecut shoe starting me thinking about the application of patina, which leads to other topics which could be spinoffs in regard to shoes, including shoe care and how to match shoes with the rest of your wardrobe. I look forward to this series and others. Well done!
Thank you for taking the time to write out your thoughts here, Mike, and I hope you try the wholecut ! Also, shoe care would be a great topic to cover. ~Sonya
Sartorial Talks is an accidental discovery of mine. There is so much of history and content lessons in each and every video that they produce, that it needs to be watched multiple times to digest thoroughly. I just love it. Thank you so very much.
This gentleman is so passionate about shoes, I truly enjoyed watching his video. Hugo, thank you for sharing your knowledge on shoes & fashion with us. Waiting for more videos from you and your beautiful wife.

Very informative and done in s simple classic way.salute the presenters, their attire and their in-depth knowledge about their subject.believe me your video taught me what tons of books and magazines on shoes couldn't .
I absolutely love this video as I wasnt too sure on wingtip etc very informational and knowledge that'll stay with me. Thank you both, keep up the great content.
Great video and great content. I love the clarity you explain this things and you can tell that this clarity comes from the fact that you love indeed what you do. Congratulations.
Love the video, nice to see how you had one button on each sleeve unbuttoned to show functionality and your guest is a very gorgeous well dressed woman. 😉
Very interesting video, Hugo! I had to laugh when you mentioned feeling embarrassed while standing in front of a shoe store for hours on end which resulted in you changing your routine and to view shoes on a Sunday when the shop was closed. Then the internet took off which allows us to view and learn about fine shoes without feeling embarrassed, unless of course at times such as when my wife stumbles upon me whilst I’m learning from sources such as your fine productions of “Sartorial Talks”. Thanks for taking the time to share your extensive knowledge within this community. Keep up the great work! Ed
Hahahaha, you feel embarrassed when your wife catch you looking in secret at Sartorial Talks ?? Times are changing my friend. For the best. Thanks for your comment and kindness. Hugo
I always enjoy Hugh. He appreciates and delights in luxury products, but without any pretentiousness. That is an amazing balance to maintain, a humble man who appreciates luxury items. Plus he had the wisdom to marry Sonya…… God bless them both.
I just want to discuss what you define as an 'austerity brogue' at the start. Here in London people would simply define the first shoe as a 'plain cap toe oxford'. To be called a brogue, a shoe requires 'brogueing', that is to say holes. To achieve brogueing, it is necessary to do the holes/punches on an extra layer of leather (otherwise you have holes in your shoe), that is why it is often done on the cap toe: you have a first layer and a second added on which the holes are punched. This requires more leather to be used. To achieve this effect without using so much leather (as would be required in times of austerity) and obtain an - austerity brogue -, the punching, stitching and detailing is all done on the same layer, trying to recreate the look , but without the use of extra layers of leather and also calling the lining into play to match colour, so that the holes don't have different colour ! I hope you will consider this and perhaps obtain your thoughts.
Dear William, thanks for your comment and your question. Actually I made a little mistake in the video as I show a plain cap toe oxford (as you rightly said) and not an Austerity Brogue. An "Austerity Brogue" is a shoe with nothing but a wingtip pattern on the upper. No perforations, pinking, or medallions. So it's true that It’s technically not a Brogue as there are no perforations. This is why, I suppose, the word "Austerity" is used also (which means "extreme plainness and simplicity of style or appearance"). Very strange indeed I agree, Cheers ! Hugo
Dear Hugo, thanks for your kind reply and your points made. The word 'austerity' always reminds me of the 1920s depression and I've always thought perhaps that is when the design came about. All the best,
I must say this because a compliment is best when applied , Sonja , Hugo I think you both are stunning individuals. Lovely simply lovely individuals thank goodness for your contribution to the world.
Dear Hugo, thanks for your videos and for sharing your fascinating knowledge with us. Could you sometime cover the issue of making/wearing a bespoke suit for/by a man using a wheelchair? In general, how to adapt the suit to any type of body. I have NEVER seen this topic discussed. Thanks again.
Dear Antonio, what an interesting question indeed ! I personally know a man (Adriano Cifonelli, the father of Lorenzo) who is paraplegic and who is extremely elegant. The jacket is not a problem. The most difficult part are the trousers (and more precisely how to measure them and with which material to make them considering that the back will rarely see the light). I promise I'm going to dig this question. Cheers, Hugo
Thanks Rick, we are so happy to read this. Try the brand Lottusse for some decent women's oxfords or derbys. If you happen to write to them for some advice on the sizing don't forget to mention Sonya and Parisian Gentleman. You'll be well treated. Cheers, Hugo
Good morning Chris, my shirts are bespoke shirts (custom made for me) by Marol in Bologna. My collar is a semi-spread collar and is quite long (in order to match with my head which is quite large). I hope I answered your question. Cheers ! Hugo
For your information we have an incredible deal for our readers / followers with Cobbler Union here : parisiangentleman.co.uk/2018/10/11/cobbler-union-reinvents-luxury-shoes-an-unprecedented-limited-edition-sale/ Cheers, Hugo
Actually, this knowledge should be tought at universities before any other scientific topic, since personality at the end matters at least as much as any science (..)
