Thank you for the help. I've fixed the link. Looks like they now make three different adapters. There was only one available when I first made the video. The "Pro" Version now says they guarantee infinity focus.
The camera operates normally in all other areas. It's very reminiscent of shooting with an old school 35 such as the Pentax K1000 or Nikon F2 for me. keeping one hand on the lens all the time to focus and adjust aperture. I would now recommend going to the Pro version of the fotodiox adapter if you can afford it. It's a little more money, but much tighter tolerances and will help your shots to be that much sharper. No tripod foot on the pro model, I much prefer it to the one in this video.
Very informative presentation. Thank you very much. Please keep up the good work. I got kind of confused about the adapter with the aperture control with vintage lenses that have manual aperture control, but it came together in the end. I hadn't considered adapting to more contemporary lenses. Thanks again.
The LAE1 is the adapter to get if you're wanting only manual focus. Sigma also makes a 30mm Native e-mount that is very good it's a 2.8 about $150 while they last.
The camera will set the other settings based on the amount of light coming through even though it doesn't know the actual aperture number. If you're on manual you can see the effects on the screen, or use the histogram to set your exposure.
I think the 105 Macro wouldn't be a problem on the mount adapter foot. It's pretty solid. I put on an old 70-300 metal lens on it a few days ago and it felt just fine on my tripod. Much better than using the camera mount for these heavy lenses.
@bboldvai I don't have a fast A mount to see if the max aperture changes, I haven't ever heard about it limiting to 3.5. It does block some light due to the fixed mirror. The camera body is very solid. I don't think I'd worry about that, but if it's an issue look at something like the rapid strap from black rapid. You could hood the strap to the tripod mount built into the LEA2. It does fit with the L Bracket, However the L bracket won't fit on a tripod. I put a plate on the LEA2 itself.
great vids man, regarding lenses without aperture rings you A mode of course; and either auto iso or set an iso, then whatever the camera sets the shutter, you can tell which aperture you are in.
You realize that this adapter doesn't have any glass in it at all. It just adapts the e-mount to the Nikon F-mount. However, you are correct that results might not always be as expected, tolerances in the mounts and differences in lens design sometimes makes a great film lens not function well on your digital Sony.
AlexZetti, I'm not sure why it shows up like that on the movie. Could be the lens I was using to record the video. But in actual use it is just the same as the e-mount 50. (I just put them both on to be sure) Works great. I did just get the Pro version of the adapter, It is quite a bit nicer than the one shown in the video. I'll have to do a comparison sometime.
Great vid! I am considering getting the LEA2 adapter, however got some worries about it. is it true that the max aperture is 3.5? Would it fit from the L bracket? I also tend to leave my camera hanging around my neck, so would the camera be able to support the weight?
using the LAE2 adapter the mas aperture is 3.5 but that's only if you use it in AUTO MODE, however in MANUAL MODE, if you manually focus then the aperture is whatever you want to make it
I've added the Amazon link to the description above. You don't lose image quality by using this adapter. It's all about the lens you put on the other end. The Nex-7 really likes nice sharp lenses. It's name on Amazon. Fotodiox Lens Mount Adapter -- Nikon Lens to Sony NEX E-Series Camera. Thanks for watching
How sturdy is the tripod foot on that adaptor? I have some heavier nikon lenses that i would be concerned about mounting to the camera (45mm PCE, 105mm Macro). Having the weight hang on the camera mount for tripod use would probably cause eccessive wear on the mount. Im concerned any heavy lenses that don't have their own tripod foot would be unusable on this wonderful nex7. These cheap adaptors seem like the perfect solution if their are sturdy enough.
hey dude i am also a proud owner of a sony nex and i got mostly the same 50 mm lens you showed first and i'd love to put on my nex, but at 04:48 you focused with that lens and everything looked bent almost like an fisheye lens ? so was this on purpose or a side effekt of the adaptor ? because i just want tot ake advantge of my old great lens :-) looking forword to your answer,,,
Hey I own the Sony Nex-F3 and I wanted to buy a Canon lens adapter and use Canon lenses, what long zoom and good quality lenses can you recommend? Thank You
So aside from no accurate aperture control if using a newer lens, it does not affect the NEX's normal operation? since less information is going to the camera because the lens can't communicate to the camera. I'm looking for cons about lens adapters on NEX before buying one so I wont let my investment go to waste.
Just got this adapter for my FS100! Question, does the aperature ring feel kind of rough to rotate? Mine feels like I need to go in there with some WD-40.
All Nikon F-mount lenses (Which is all besides the new Nikon 1 cameras) will work. You won't know which F-stop you're on exactly if it doesn't have an actual Aperture ring on the lens.
I'm hoping to get a quick response. I'm looking to get a good 35mm lens for my NEX-7. One I'm looking at on Amazon is called SAL 35mm f1.8, it says it's an A-Mount. Which adaptor should I get if I only want to use manual focus? I'm hoping not to spend the $120.00 asking price for the laea1 adaptor. Thanks.
I haven't actually tried the Olympus version myself. Looking through some reviews on amazon, sounds like the lenses are difficult to get off of the olympus version of the mount. One person said I have to twist really hard.
This adapter will make your 105 Nikon lens work on the Sony Nex Cameras. You should be able to attach the old lens to the D7000 already. Either way you'll have to run things in full manual.
Hi I have a nex 7 and old olympus lenses. I bought the fotodiox for olympus lenses I attached the fotdiox to the lens and tried it on the camera. The manual focus didnt work well and when I tried to detach the lens from the fotodiox, it seems that there is no part to click to dettach it. Can you help me with this?
Focal distance will change the same as they do on Nikon DX cameras. it's a 1.5 times crop factor. If I put a 50mm Nikkor on this it crops like a 75mm. The same as if you put a 50mm on a D7000 or D5100 etc. The sensor is an aps-c size where the D700 or D4 Nikon are full frame where a 50 is a 50mm
I haven't had the opportunity to try many Canon lenses out on my Nex. Are you looking at the 70-200 or more like the 300-500 range? Personally, I'm looking at the new Sony 70-400 G2 lens when I have the funds to go long. Anyone else reading this tried out the Canon long glass?
sorry I'm trying to understand .... I have a 105mm lens nikon 2.5 of the way back in 1977 ... you say ..... I have no poblem if I buy adapter to my d7ooo nikon??
Once you've taken a photo with the adapter on, can the camera tell you what f/stop number the photo used? Or does it only know how to adjust the other settings (in Aperture mode) from the light coming in?
Sam Horne Why not give something like this a try then? www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=995463&gclid=Cj0KEQiAz7OlBRDErsTx47LKz-8BEiQAY0OlYr4vIIWZyubKVrHqZPx-ZvMim1dRM4yLR7AGlYSGq2kaAh8H8P8HAQ&Q=&is=REG&A=details ===Edit=== It also gives you an extra stop of light.....
Thanks I bought Tokina 100-300 F4 & I used it with Nex-vg10 after but adapter (nex-nikon) it's very well But It's never work with my cam nikon D7000 !! If you can give me your advice please
I have the Nikkor 85mm 1.8 G and it doesnt have an aperture ring on the lens. Will an adapter like this still make it easy to change aperture on my sony A7?
Yes, this adapter will with your full frame glass. This one has a tripod foot. They also make a pro version that seems to be better built, but it doesn't have a tripod foot. I now prefer to use the pro version when I'm adapting to Nikon Glass. Bot work well.
Thanks Jon Adams I'll take a look at the pro version. Only reason I wanted to go down this route is because I need to do some filming and had seen a good post on rungunshoots blog. I was originally looking at a Sony RX100 but this way I could use my Nikon lenses.
@sterlingunderdog I have a really Right Stuff L Bracket on my camera all the time. I talk about it in the Nex-7 Accessories video on my channel. Thanks for Watching
I'd recommend Aperture or Manual mode. since the camera can't control the aperture but it can control the other settings. Aperture works because the camera reads the amount of light coming in, even though it doesn't know what the f stop number is.
This does cover full frame sensor. I do like the pro version of this better than the one in this video. It wasn't available when I first got this adapter. This one has the tripod mount where the pro one doesn't.
Wrong link above, I know because I purchased the adapter from the link :-( The link above links to a Nikon to NEX E adapter alright but that adapter does not have an aperture pin.
The original isn't as nice in build quality as the pro. The connection has a little more play in it. Also the pro has better control over the f-stop than the original.
+Santosh Kiran The adapter and lenses don't talk to the camera at all. On some Sony cameras you can manually input the lens so you have record otherwise nothing shows up for F stop, focal length etc.
