The golden age of air racing was a time in American history when the boundaries of flight and aviation engineering and technology were tested by talented, brave and gutsy pilots. Amelia Earhart, Rosco Turner, Florence Klingensmith, and Jimmy Doolittle are just a few heros who come to mind.
Aside from taking aviation to the next level, establishing world records, winning cash prizes, and climbing in celebrity status, many took home prestigious trophies and awards to signify their grand accomplishments.
Many of these trophies today are in major museums such as the Smithsonian, the National Museum of the United States Air Force, Wedell-Williams Aviation & Cypress Sawmill Museum, and the Crawford auto-Aviation Museum. Still others are kept by the pilots, their families, or held in private collections.
Today on History and Relics we are revealing one of the rarest trophies that’s been hidden away from the public and air race enthusiasts alike - until now! Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the Woolaroc Trophy won by pilot Ray Moore in the Frank Phillips Trophy Race during the National Air Races held in Cleveland, Ohio 92 years ago on August 31st, 1932.
