I’m so happy I saw you hype up Sorrowland, because I read it last month and loved it. I always love the found family trope and haven’t read many of these, so thanks! I’ve heard such terrible things about the ending of Lightbringer that I had basically taken it off my TBR. I may have to add it back now, though ☺️

Yea I mean I can see why some people don't like the ending of Lightbringer but it really didn't bother me and I am still excited to re-read this story one day.

Good list! I'd say The Expanse and A Gentlemen in Moscow are some of my favorites that heavily feature this trope.

This is my favorite trope of all time…bonus points if its a team too! 🙌🏼 Yes!! Foundryside,The Way of Kings, and A Man Called Ove are great for found family 😭 Perfect choices :) I’ve never heard of Catfishing on Catnet, but I’m going to run to look it up now!

I love this trope too! I've read seven of the authors you mentioned. Some of my other favourites are the Books of the Raksura series by Martha Wells, very comfy forest fantasy with non-human people, and most of the books by T.Kingfisher (Digger, Nine Goblins) 🥰
@LiteratureScienceAlliance

Oooo I need to try out Martha Well's fantasy, I think now I am more excited for that than Murderbot! Thanks for putting it on my radar!

♥ Catfishing the best, I definitely wanted more clowder in the second book, but they're both so good. I will be here for any books in that series and from what I can gather Kritzer often has those cozy/kind vibes, I really need to get into backlist works.

Andre Norton uses Found Family often and my favorite by her would be the Solar Queen series: orphan joins the crew of a Space Trader (my favorite trope). Extra points for the ship's cat. A more modern example would be the Murderbot Diaries, Murderbot may not admit it but they are lucky to have found a family. Not SF but the historical fiction series Sharpe's Rifles by Bernard Cornwell has an orphan join the British Army and find a family. Also highly recommend the TV movies starring a young Sean Bean.

I love this trope! A recent fave with found family is The Shattered Sea trilogy by Joe Abercrombie. I haven’t read his more popular series yet but I really wish this one got more love. Red Rising is also perfect for this trope.
@LiteratureScienceAlliance

Is this his YA series or is this a completely different series? Cause you are right I never hear about it! And agreed with Red Rising!

😾 the emoji doesn't get across how warm I felt after this video. The topic alone always feel so cozy but you talking about with that big smile on your face only makes it all the better😹😽 Found families I love, beside the ones you already mentioned: - many in the RotE, my faves being the ones in the fourth and fifth sub-series. Rain Wilds (RotE 10-13) centers on a group of people cast out from their community and sent into the Wilderness to find a place to settle these magical creatures (they're expected to never return) and them building this weird community for themselves. The found family in Fitz&the Fool (RotE 14-16) is extremely symbolic and goes full circle back to Farseer in that aspect, but is just in general so warm and wonderful. - the crew of the Wayfarer - the crew of the Tide Child (they are basically sentenced to death but still must serve their nation in this ongoing war - in a story about ending war, saving dragons and forming a functioning ship crew they learn more about eachother and slowly built a sense of both self-respect and self-value). - of course there is the whole Avonlea crew, but after finishing Anne of the Island recently, I have to add Anne's college friends as well - including three cats. -and for nostalgia reasons my last recommendation is the wizard guild Fairy Tail out of the manga/anime of that same name. I was obsessed with that series from age 11-15 and still hold it close to my heart. The found family aspect is probably the best part of that series and I always cried on a regular basis reading those manga volumes.🥰

I feel like found family is so common in heist narratives because you typically have a group of outcasts (ripe for that "I don't need anyone but I still want to be loved" drama) and the heist success depends on everyone working seamlessly together...and of course all those unintentional bonding moments during the hours planning the heist. Love it!
@LiteratureScienceAlliance

💖👨‍👧‍👦👩‍👧💖Endearing Trope!! 🥰 Raybearer, Graceling series, and Aurora Rising are 3 more that come to mind. I don’t think they are the most amazing books, but I do love them for the found family aspect. I think Fireborne trilogy has a good “ff” feel also.

I LOVE the found family trope but recently I've been looking for the found father trope. where a man is put in a father figure position. do you have any recommendations similar to that? thanks!
@LiteratureScienceAlliance
@LiteratureScienceAlliance 2 года назад
Liveship Traders has that but its also Hobb so be prepared to be hurt. Mistborn for sure has that. Recently I read a sci-fi called First Light by Casey Berger with this and it comes out September 14th. Anne of Green Gables has this. The Witcher series, but I don't think it leans into it enough for my taste. Sort of with The Poppy War. The Sixth World series by Rebecca Roanhorse. That's a loose list of the things I have read this year that I think count for that.
