Im pretty sure that there’s PURPOSEFULLY no diverse characters in the books. It’s much more realistic to believe that these Christo-fascists of Gillead, would also be YT supremacists. I think they even address the discarding of Black & Brown folk briefly in the first book. It makes MUCH more sense.
I’ve had some great reads this year so far: The Coast Road, Unseen City, The Heart’s Invisible Furies, The Road to Nowhere trilogy, Sword of Kaigen, Soldier Son trilogy, The City of Last Chances, The Safe Keep, North Woods…just an excellent year so far.
I only had one goal for this year, and I've achieved it, which was finishing Malazan: Book of the Fallen. Now, I have to go finish the Novels of the Malazan Empire and I also really really want to start Brandon Sanderson, and hopefully I can start Stormlight this year. I'll probably go Elantris -> Mistborn -> Stormlight? Unless I'm just too curious about Stormlight and too lazy to read the other things before, which might happen
Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gabriel Kay. Also Martha Wells, her standalone Well of the Infinite. Perfection. I also couldn't finish Witch King, you're not alone.
I might have DNF'd _Lessons in Chemistry_ if I had read it with my eyes, but I remember really enjoying the audiobook narrator so I found it pretty good doing chores and crafts listening, all things considered.
I've done a 24 books in 2024 and so far i've read 10, but i'm currenlty in the middle of 2 more. So in terms of reading the books that i wanted to, i'm doing a pretty decent job. In terms of loving them, it's been a very mixed bag so far. I've been interested in the Red Mars trilogy as well, but i keep putting it off. So, if you wanna do a buddy read for it, that might give us both some motivation to pick it up
I loved The Warm Hands of Ghosts but I would probably recommend not reading it during the summer for vibes, haha. It feels like a very wintry and rainy historical horror book to me, so I would lean towards fall or winter
For a completed selfpub sci-fi series, I'd highly recommend The Waystations trilogy by NC Scrimgeour!! You are doing so well with your goals though, and I love the plans for the 2nd half of the year. Warm Hands of Ghosts definitely has chilly vibes, I'd read it when it's getting moody outside again haha. Happy reading 🤩
I've read 11/24 books on my physical TBR for the year, which would be great except for the fact that I've swapped out several books on the list😅 In my defense, two of them were just different books by the same author and a few were books that I'd bought in the same time era. I'd also initially put nonfiction on my list, but quickly realized that I cannot put nonfic on any TBR list because I just won't do it, lol. But since over 40% of the books I've read this year have been from my shelves, I'm not feeling too guilty!👻
The Shadow of the Wind is such a good book. I find it great standalone. I was gifting it that year at all birthdays.☺️ But there are more books in that series. I believe characters are connected but I don't know.
I am feeling the same way about The Warm Hands of Ghosts! I adore Katherine Arden and want to form my own opinion on it but the reviews I have seen have been lukewarm. I stopped making yearly TBRs because I always forget about them 😂
The creepy forest in Swordheart was my favorite part too. And yay for rereads that get better each time you read them! I haven't been doing much reading, but after picking up Translation State based on your rec and enjoying it, I'm working my way through the Ancillary series. Really enjoyed the first book, second one was meh, starting on the third now so we'll see. I'm also trying again to watch Bridgerton, but omg the drama is killing me... I scraped through the first season, starting the second, and really just trying to get to the third since I enjoy Nicola Coughlan so much.
I deeply appreciated your Butler video!! Definitely need to check more of her works out. And I have a feeling you will indeed really love the Saint of Steel books. Also, I have a feeling Oathbringer will become my fave as well because I already enjoyed it a lot more than other people on first read. My faves of June were A Letter to the Luminous Deep by Sylvie Cathrall, Requiem for a Star by UG Gutman, and the Between Earth and Sky series by Rebecca Roanhorse (even if the finale was a bit messy) 🥰
The time travellers don't age quicker because of the travel, they just keep aging normally. Shannon is biologically older than she is supposed to be chronologically because she spent years on the IFTs(the timelines she visits), so even tho she is 27 years old in the main timeline (chronologically), she spent almost 20 years in other timelines so her body aged accordingly.
Fantastic video :) Really looking forward to continuing Butler, think Bloodchild and Parable of The Sower are next on my list. Ah yeah Interview with The Vampire, Lestat and Louis' daughter Claudia is a 10 year old girl stuck in a 10 year olds body but as she grows up she begins to have more complicated thoughts and feelings, however her body kinda has her stuck in a limbo, and it deals with the pain and suffering that might cause.
Well, to contrast with your good reading month and record time Oathbringer, I'm having a reverse-record time on Stonewielder. I still haven't finished it and I'm not even close to. I've been gaming way too much for that. So I finished 0 books in June, lmao. BUT I AM FIGHTING BACK NOW. A Brazilian booktuber I follow will be hosting a readathon starting on the 13th, so I decided to finish Stonewielder until then, which amounts to one chapter per day, basically. So that's what I'm doing now
