These vids make me miss driving a truck from 04 to 2012. I ended up disabled and had to leave the road, but man, do I miss it. Love the look of these old cabovers fixed up. Good luck with the motor, bud. Also, word of advice to you, don't do too much and get burned out, or you'll regret it later, that's what led to me being disabled, and I ruined my body.
I just got back into my rig Monday , ya I broke my elbow in three places and collarbone . At the age of 55 that didn't feel good , but I'm so glad to be back in it . Driver I'm really sorry for whatever happen , but I'll drive 10 miles for you tomorrow thinking about you .
Great job so far Bruce!!! I had open heart surgery a month ago and watching your videos has really been the best part of my day while I've been stuck home recovering!! I literately look forward to your daily updates!!! Keep up the good work!
Reading these comments has gotta be a full time job.. 90% Keyboard Warriors and 10% people who actually know wtf their talking about. Nice video as always Bruce!
Make sure you leave the cam followers alone. When you get into that, you will want a manual and someone who has done them before. If you mess with them it will affect your injector timing.
Probably too late for that now. Hes got that crap spread out everywhere. Smh. The boy had to have been dropped on his head when he was little. Something aint right.
The rods should have numbers on them and he can just look in the video on what direction they go if he forgets. But hes rebuilt alot of engines. Hes pretty good. He also rebuilds auto trans. If you can rebuild and auto trans an engine is a piece of cake.
@@1980bwc you're such a tool... you do realize the only the thing that will be re used is the rods, which are stamped and ea6 oriented?? Specific rod on crank journals doesn't really matter either.
Hola Bruce!!
A bearing check is the very first thing that should have been done, before all the shiny stuff went on. Paint doesnt make you any money if the thng cant get down the road.
4:25 the moment he realizes WTF did i start 😆 oh well to late now. Its good to do a overhaul. Then you know your good to go and if it blows well you know who and why lol.
Good call on getting rid of low flow cooling system (Big Cam IV). While you are tearing the engine down, be sure to inspect EVERY lobe on the camshaft. If one is bad, they all are bad. If you end up replacing cam, you must replace the cam follower rocker boxes, which means that the the shim packs that determine injection timing will need to be redone. DO NOT REUSE THE OLD SHIM PACKS, THEY WILL NOT BE RIGHT!!! As others have advised, this is a procedure that requires special tools and goes much faster with someone who has done it before. Also, if the cam is replaced, re-time the follower boxes BEFORE you install the pistons and rods. I sure don't envy you having to lay in the dirt outside working on the engine. Make sure you keep as much dirt out of the engine as possible. Best of luck to you!
Hey man i just wanna say that the main bearings in this particular cummins product(855 ci)have to be install a certain way.The lower bearing shell" CANNOT"be installed into the main cap. It must clicked into the crankshaft then the cap installed after that.there is a ring that locks it in. This is critical for bearing crush,if not done a failure will happen. Also ther are three different width bearings, skinny on nos 2,4,6 fatter on 1,3,5 and a fatter shell on no 7. I know it sounds steange but this is what cummins did on this engine right through to the N14.
While you have it torn down, take the time to check the acessory drive bearings, seal and bushing in the front cover. They are famous for turning the bushing in the cover bore.
Yeah normal guys would rebuild the engine before making the truck look good. That's why I was surprised to see him buying all this chrome and things you don't need rather than tearing that engine down and seeing what it needed that gets done first but to each their own I just hope he gets the job done and does not lose interest in it on another project that he has.
If you got the money to do it you can do it anyway you want but normally yes you make sure your motor tranny and frame are good to go from your lawn tractor to your daily
I’ve seen the engine guys at work use a bottle jack and a bar to push the liners out if we didn’t have the right tool. Just be careful not to scar the crank. I’m enjoying you taking on these projects. Something to watch and learn.
7:26 poor Aaron, you know we gotta give him he shit for that one 🤣. Unscrewing the dipstick. It's all good, he'll be doing his own cabover rebuild before you know it.
Love the videos you and your brother remind me of my brother and me working on trucks he passed away a year ago and these videos remind me of the memories love it!!
Regardless of what he is doing first at the end when he's finish he'll have a brand new truck.sounds like a bunch of haters on here🤣.do your thing bro I'm enjoying see this project 👍
Make your own liner puller. Get a piece of flat plate size it up to the bottom of the liner. Get a bottle jack and jack under the liner GENTLY...They will pop up easily
I have not subscribe in month but started to follow you with will it start.. fun as hell.. and got stuck with the cabover truck. you got to finnish that.. May the force be with ya!
I just gotta say I started watching You Rebuild this Truck with your first Video and when You did the Paint Job I thought Oh No BUT I got to Say you have really surprised Me you are doing a Awesome Job this Truck is going to Look Sound and Run Good keep up the good work and Good Luck Really Like your Videos Thank You
Originally came to this channel for the engine content so I'm not gonna complain about all the other stuff you did first. Excited to see more Detroit guts!!
Use a good size deep socket, roll the crank around until the socket is wedged between the throw of the crank (NOT THE JOURNAL!) and the bottom edge of the liner. Bump the starter and out comes the liner. Changed them on the side of the highway this way more than once. The liner tools are nice and make it easy but they’re big dollars if you plan on this being a one time thing.
Keep your rod caps with the rods they came off of together, the same goes for the main bearing caps. If you don't you may have problems getting the caps to match up and it may mess up your bearing tolerances, you should mark the caps if they are not marked. Take note of what side of the crank the thrust bearing is on. When you get the sleeves out make sure all O-ring grove are spotless. Also install cylinders without O-rings and check liner to deck height. Sometime you may have to swap cylinder liners around to get the right cylinder to deck height, some diesel engines even have shims to raise the liner height. Also when you polish the crank be-careful of getting dirt in the oil holes. Good Luck !!
I hope you pull the main caps & check them as the glazing of the top piston edges & wear on the rod bearings concerns me. Don't like saying this, but you would be better off pulling the motor and gearbox, then servicing/rebuilding/replacing clutch etc on the bench. Something tells me there's a bigger reason this truck was parked in the first instance. Hearing from a truck repairer here in Australia, the gears in those RoadRanger boxes are known to develop hairline fractures that eventually lead to shattering under load.
one would think.. but it sure doesnt seem like it. at least have a folding table you could lay everything out in order with the rod caps matching exactly as they came off
I was muttering "now refit the cap ... REFIT THE CAP ... R E F I T T H E C A P!!" He didn't mark the caps before taking them off, handed each one to the Bro who then had no idea which way round he put it down. Just so damn frustrating seeing someone make basic errors. And even when he gets advised (like about that rear plate (Headache rack?) in the comments he just ignores it ... the lad is giving that truck a good go and she is looking good but dammit you need to KNOW what you are doing when you get to Cummins engines..
@@1chish fake it til u make it. Its sure to be fun to watch. Absolutely refit the rod cabs to their mated rod. No buffing, grinding, polishing whatsoever. These are mated and appear to be saw cut caps. The whole video had me screaming, dont do that!
Were experiencing Global Cooling here in Arizona...3 days of rain, this month...back into the 60's and 70's and lots of Sunshine, in afew days...are lows are in the 40's...the cactus get watered...good luck with the engine rebuild.
Love watching you work on this cab over. Nice vid. FYI - Oil is not good for tires. Try to avoid letting oil sit on the tread. Looking forward to the next vid.
Bruce, I really enjoy watching you operate on tractors to my surprised you work with trucks also that keeps my interest went I see a multiple mechanic. Also I like you don't do so much talking as to getting work done I used to be a mechanic working on airplanes engines.
I've been watching these rebuild videos of this International from the start and it's coming along great, I must say I'm interested in what type of work you're intending to do with this beast, I'm looking forward to see how the new sun visor is going look, I'm thinking it's going to look real sick
Good solid advice. Any time you remove a cylinder liner, whether you replace with new or reinstall, always check liner protrusion height with a dial indicator. A few thousandths doesnt seem like much but it can lead to a leaking head gasket in the matter of 1 trip.
Make sure you look for erosion on the block where the liner flange sits. If the block needs cut you can get liners that are .040/.060 larger and thicker so shims are not needed. I also have a feeling that you are going to play with the rocker boxes. Keep in mind that the gaskets are also shims that set the valve and injection timing. Find an old guy expert.
Please do a video on swapping jake brakes and also the low flow to high flow I have a 1984 9670 and plan on doing the same and would love to see how it's done awesome videos great projects keep up tha amazing content
It's-20 C here in NB east coast Canada..Bit cooler out west last week -40 C that's cold..love the vlogs and chive on and stay positive..Thumbs up subscriber
first rule for wallowing under a greasy engine teardown is wear a nice clean shirt or jacket. second rule is roll around on the dirt even though you have lots of cardboard that your chrome parts came in.
