They didn't know how but it happened. Although this wouldn't be their end, this is just another chapter within the history of humanity and the effects that war can cause. They have taxes, tithes, citizenship, civil bureaucracy/administration, and laws. When you have systems of governance applied over huge swathes of territory, then you don’t have some group of “live-action role players”. That’s a legitimate civil authority. Authorities in this case. That’s literally the plot of New Vegas. The actual struggle of differing visions (and even ideologies) of great Men over the fate of post-apocalypse America in the American Southwest. The fact that you think that’s “LARPing” does indeed show you have no idea what that term means or is supposed to pertain to.

What kills me is you don't even have to venture far from the Fallout games to find a game where there are reptilian people who *don't* talk like that. In fact, there are multiple games with such characters, and they're called the Elder Scrolls games. And they're not a weird fetish thing - the closest thing you get to fetishism of them is a silly porn book/play script written by some horny nobleman in Morrowind, which is more comedic than anything.

Like in Leyawiin there's racial conflicts between Argonians and Khajiit on the regular because the city is near the borders of both Black Marsh and Elsweyer. Also lots of lore explaining their existence. It feels like they are solidly grounded in the world. Meanwhile, the scalies in The Frontier solely exist for the sake of the writers' fetishes, and you're just expected to assume radiation/FEV created them because that stuff is apparently magic.

@Zoomer Waffen Yep, pretty ridicoulus that outcasts/splinter factions like the Crusaders or the NCR Exiles have seemingly unlimited numbers and access to equipment and technology that is exclusively pre war standard. Meanwhile your average NCR trooper in the Mojave, who is a member of one of the largest and best supplied post war armies, is equipped with next to no body armor and a shotgun held together by duct tape. But hey, at least the remaining devs removed the "lore friendly" tag from their mod.

some of the companion stuff in fallout 4 worked similarly, where I'd have companions wanting to talk about their drug addictions or traumatic past while in raider, ghoul and mirelurk infested ruins, to the point where I was actively looking around a corner to check that I wasn't going to get ambushed while they were talking (I turned the "cinematic" dialogue camera off).

Yeah, like maybe it excuses lacking production value, but money doesn't suddenly make writers good so it's not like any of the problems the mod gets criticized for would disappear if the mod had a budget.

@@ertrick3693 On a technical level, the mod should be looked up to as a peak example of what kind of feats can be done with mods, but holy fuck does the writing sours the experience. The NCR questline for example is like a messy Hodge podge of tropes, scenes, and elements from other video games stittched together like some modding equivalent of Frankenstein's Monster, especially when they ripped off Wolfenstein word for word for the space segment (something fans of the mod have told me is TOTALLY okay, which it isn't). And it is quite evident from watching these videos that the writers had not taken into account player actions.

Both Veronica and Arcade lost most of the people they knew, Arcade during the events of Fallout 2, Veronica when the NCR attacked Helios 1. Lily suffers from the kind of mental illness all nightkin suffer from, and despite making an effort to treat herself, taking her medication at full dosage stops her from remembering her long-dead grandchildren whilst refusing to take it turns her into the same homicidal sociopath as all nightkin. Rex suffers from problems with the brain, and will die if he doesn't receive a brain transplant. Raul gets the true traumatic past. When the bombs fell, his family ranch survived. After a shootout with raiders which the family survived, his family home was burnt down whilst they were still inside. Only he and one of his three sisters survived. The two of them set to scavenging, but when the ghoulification process began, ended up too sick to continue. By this point, he'd built up a reputation, and when bandits found his sister, they raped and murdered her so badly that, I quote the Fallout wiki, he could only recognise her by a scar on her knee. He then found a prostitute in Two Sun (formerly Tucson, Arizona), by the name of Claudia who reminded him of his sister. Legion takes over, a raider by the name of Dirty Dave and his six brothers move in, and said raider family kills four of the prostitutes, taking Claudia for themselves. Raul chases them, finds her dead with a bullet in each eye, then nearly dies himself in the ensuing gunfight, surviving purely on his hate for Dave. Finally, he offers to help Tabitha up on Black Mountain repair her transmitter, and is "rewarded" by being imprisoned as her live-in repair slave.

Ironically New California has opposite problem. It tries to be so lore friendly it breaks any logic.
