Another idea is to use those hoverboard batteries, they typically come as 36 volt 4.4 amp hour-and cost about $30-they are my go-to for project batteries

I would think that a steam setup, and it's fuel might be just a little bit too big and heavy for a kayak. I can just see it now. A big cast iron firebox belching flames and smoke heating a big heavy pressure vessel full of water with high pressure steam lines Going back to a steel Tesla turbine and gear reduction unit to the prop. Oh yeah, don't forget pulling a second kayak behind it as a tender full of coal!

If you want longer range man make a sun shade above your seat that won't interfere with casting a fishing pole, and make it out of PVC pipe and a flexible solar panel. Then connect the solar panel to your battery or batteries. You might consider adding outriggers on each side of the rear of your Kayak for additional boyancy to offset the weight of the motor and batteries plus yourself and your gear. The reason I suggest a solar panel sun shade is to keep you from getting burnt out on the water and as long as you have sunlight you have power for your batteries. Plus the batteries can be recharging as you fish or if you decide to get out somewhere to fish off the bank or a sand bar it can be recharging so your batteries are always fully charged. Even if you go camping overnight somewhere it will continue charging the next morning. Just one other thing, I think I would hook the throttle and rudder on a hand lever next to the seat, or like you said add a remote with servos so you can steer it and control throttle both with a small handheld remote. I would tether the remote to the side of your seat though so it doesn't get lost or dropped and sink.

I'm interested to see what you come up with. With those kayaks you will probably max out at around 5 mph even with a really powerful setup. The hull speed of short kayaks just won't let you push much faster. For the best efficiency you will want to match the propeller to your expected speed.

What is needed is a pod that can be securely attached to a variety of hull configurations, in which can be mounted a motor and battery bank, with controls routed to the seat area of the kayak. Individual builds are, by nature, custom. A buoyant, mountable motor pod that can be attached to different boats is a far mor preferable solution, not only for its plug&play nature, but because it doesn't sacrifice the already limited storage available on small watercraft. In Star Wars lore, the Corellian light freighter Millennium Falcon is built with that unique front end in order to lock into a long freight pod, which you never see, and is essentially an overpowered ship meant to push the freight pod along. That is what is needed. Not something that adds weight which lowers capacity of the boat. Not something that detracts from deck and storage space availability.

I’ve designed a 2” x 5” three cell vinyl keel 5 k long with 10 # of lead weights in the cell farthest from the bottom of the kayak the 10 pounds will lower the CG and create more stability I will add balloons in the center chamber to increase lift. Dude thanks! I've been following and was blown away when you raced the bass boat and killed it. Will this compete with that? Also, you would be surprised just how strong poly-carbonate filament is. A mirage drive motor mount 3d printed would totally work using PC Filament @ 100% Infill. At least until you find a shop that can CNC the alum. To speak to strength, I 3d printed a CNC that can mill 1/2" alum, and whatever thickness in wood. Simply printing all parts @ 65-100% infill made it incredibly strong. Check out the MPCNC (Mostly Printed CNC) also has the plans (open source) for a MP3DP (Mostly printed 3D printer.)

Excellent video series idea, I too am very interested in powered kayaks and the various DIY methods. I have been looking at the large R/C waterjet outdrives they have, there is one with a 1 1/2" output diameter that comes with a brushless motor and coupler-its all one assembly, but I was thinking about getting two and driving them with 100 watt brushed D/C motors for simplicity of controls. Anyway, I digress, every one of your videos are great-longtime subscriber.

I am looking to add some power to my sea kayaks, my kayaks are pretty large 3 seater, wide body, heavy, 4.5 mtrs long and almost impossible to capsize. I am looking to do some bay fishing in the ocean and the kayak is a hard push with paddles especially with only one person. Far from fun. With the salt water/corrosion i am trying to find a solution. How to make the motor waterproof?
@28cruzin
@28cruzin 4 года назад
I was looking into doing the same project about 10 years ago. The batteries were the bigest hurdle then. You may want to rethink using a high power motor because the faster the the kayak goes the more it will "squat". There is a formula based on waterline length that will allow you to determine "hull speed". Simply put, the longer the waterline, the higher the the hull speed. Kayaks are not planeing hulls. They are displacement hulls. That makes them easy to move at low power but terribly inefficent and slow with high horsepower. My solution to this problem was to form a step in the bottom to allow the hull to break suction and come up on a plane. The step would need to be a little aft of the widest point of the beam. The flatter the bottom the easier the craft will plane. Remember, the hull is very flexable and with speed you will see the bottom curve inward. By the way, you can weld your poly kayak using heat and an old frisbee. I learned a great deal about this back in the '80s when I sold and repaired wind surfers. Yes, I did try putting an outboard on a pair of wind surfers. Fast, fun, and scary. Hull shape is everything when going for speed. I would want to set up a kayak to reach hull speed and run for a long time. I can hardly wait to see the results of your experiments! I really enjoy this channel as you do excellent work and explain things well.
@TheGoodoftheLand
@TheGoodoftheLand 4 года назад
+28cruzin I figured it would plow through the water rather than plane. I'm going for a useable top speed of 10 mph though the cruise speed will be somewhere between 3 and 7 mph. It would be cool to get it up on plane perhaps you can shoot me an email with your phone number and I could pick your brain on a non permanent system that helps to get her out of the water.

@@TheGoodoftheLand Hey man, I don't want to scupper ideas as I'm looking forward to more on this video (as I want to build a motor device also for my 15' kayak) but I think from experience of what most others tend to achieve that 10mph is probably not realistic without an insane amount of power. I think even 6-7mph will need a lot of pushing dude. Can't wait for the next video though. I would love to made a home brew version of the Bixpy kayak motor system because I can't afford the realy one, nor could I justify it just for fun), but I can't find any intel about what spec their motor and battery pack is for a start point. I did run my kayak from a brushless milwaukee drill and home made propshaft arrangement with a 2 blade trolling motor prop, and it pushed my barge as fast easily as I can paddle it, but only for approx 10 minutes from a 4ah battery pack. Good luck anyway.

That's 200amp phase not dc. And it's at full load on take-off- which is impossible when you have fluid slippage... That esc is perfectly fine to run that motor. I run a 100amp 12s esc on my diytorqueboards 84 motor on my kayak geared for 25mph with no issues. The bigger the propeller or bigger the rpm will increase load... I'm running 12s no issues.. I'm using water flow that forces through a tube into a aluminium plate and flows out the back of the kayak... my esc is always at the ocean temperature.... that's Saltwater too...
