My 18 hole round of golf in April at Mallard Creek Golf Course distilled down to the four essential holes. They were the best of times, they were the worst of times, they were... times.
Mallard Creek is located a couple of miles outside of Lebanon, Oregon, which is itself located a couple of miles east of I-5 between Albany and Eugene. That's important because if you are traveling from Portland to Bandon and are looking for a spot to scratch that golf itch between the two, you could do a LOT worse than Mallard Creek.
The course is in the country with rolling, hilly terrain, and plenty of creeks, ponds, and marsh areas. Sections of the course are fairly open if you spray the ball, while other stretches of the course require a little more precision. There are drivable par 4's, some lengthy par 5's, and fun downhill tee shots on several par 3's.
The clubhouse is newer as of this posting, and has a fantastic patio for post-round commisserating over one or two beverages. Speaking of beverages, there are several taps, a fully stocked cooler (beer, wine, seltzer, soda, energy drinks, you name it) as well as a fully stocked bar. Next to the clubhouse is a large patio area with views of the Cascade foothills and the 3rd, 18th, and 9th greens. Pretty great spot if you need a rest.
Other amenities include a driving range, fully stocked pro shop, golf carts (seriously think about using them), indoor seating areas, an adjacent RV park, and best of all, a friendly and helpful staff!
This round was played April 22, and I paid $45 to walk 18. I consider that a tremendous value considering the quality of the course. The greens had been plugged recently enough to see the plug marks, but they had grown in and were rolling true and smooth.
If you have the chance, play Mallard Creek; you won't regret it. I know I'll be back.
