@@timothypankiewicz6312 I don’t think CMON committed to that. They mostly said the other three retail expansions were cancelled. But there is a Spider-Man movie December this year, so holiday season seems likely.
So, I wasn't on the fence about backing the next X-Men one. But I was hesitant as to how "all in" I was gonna go. But seeing Zee bump this a to a 9 has definitely got me considering an all in.
Yeah, the fact that this is an all-in Kickstarter where you will easily be able to use everything is a MASSIVE plus and basically unheard of these days.
I just discovered Marvel United and fell in love with the minis and quick style of play. One thing that makes me sad though is that the majority of expansions are only available through re-sellers that are asking for some ridiculous prices...
I'm in the same boat. I split an all-in x-men pledge with a buddy and fell in love, now I'm trying to find all the OG stuff on the black market and it ain't cheap :'(
I agree. I really like the street level heroes like daredevil, luke cage, etc and i cant even play an expansion box because I'll have to buy the everything box which is insanely expensive. Kinda makes me sad there isnt an easier way to get your favorite characters
Considering how many people jumped in on this at retail, that's terrible retail support (typical for CMON, but still). They have 4 expansions they could bring to retail, and the game seems popular even with non-backers.

@@Michael_Eisenberg The OFFICIAL announcement is "The bottom line is that the non-Kickstarter Exclusive expansions, with the exception of Enter the Spider-verse, will NOT be hitting retail, making those boxes exclusive by default." I'm going to take that as fact until there is official word that says otherwise. (The exception to this, of course, is retailers who participated in the Kickstarter... who will have a limited stock to offer at retail, but they won't be able to restock). Of course, that's not to say they won't release retail expansions at some point, just that as of now, they have OFFICIALLY announced that 5 of the 6 existing expansions will not hit retail.

Hot Take: Marvel United is a Spirit Island Junior! They have so much in common: Different player abilities, moving on a differently arranged map, enemy expands, resources for actions, abilities on cards, combine powers with fellows, strong solo modes.
I think at the end of the day - it doesn’t seem like a game I would continue to play. I’m glad I didn’t back it. I’ve made my correct assessment. Not enough depth or strategy for me. Loved hearing all your thoughts :)
The expansions add so much to the replay-ability of the game. I initially thought the game was too simple, but the sheer variety of stuff has added so much to the gameplay.
Great 4 squares review again, thanks boys ! I am really really disappointed to hear that none of the expansion content would come to retail. This is typically a casual game, and more specifically it's one I offered to my friend's kid ; we thoroughly enjoyed the base content and the value for money is exceptional. It is also a bit limited in replayability so it really needs to be complemented, as mentioned here. But this type of family games - especially in another language, which is not available on KS upfront - is not something you seek on crowdfunding platforms. It has to be available in shops. Audience is large enough, copies will be sold anyway so why not going that route? I am sure CMON will change opinions on this anyway, just a matter of time. The gauntlet maybe not, it's complicated to produce or what not, but the rest has to come over!
Interested to try it despite the Chibi look, but never want to spend money on a CMON KS due to their practices and high cost , ill hope to try it eventually later.
Me too. I got the base in the first wave and said it was kind meh. But with everything... it changes a lot. Is already my most played game. I keep going 1 boss after another and if we fail, everyone just replaces the heroes e try again. Time flys when we’re playing

Never has a game caused so much interest for my non gamer friends and relatives. And this was just the core game and now that they heard i just got my all-in pledges, I have been asked to setup gaming nights. My plan was to only play with painted minis as incentive to paint them but there is so much demand to play and I've been trying to find out how or where to even start with expansions. Nice problem to have. To me Marvel United is one of the best games to come out since Settlers of Cataan to actually appeal or a great entry point to boardgames to non gamers.
Love Marvel United, its up there as one of the best games I've ever played, its why I'm doing so many playthroughs on my channel, cant get enough of it, X-men is a guaranteed all in for me.
This flew under the radar for me. I didn’t back the kickstarter. I just picked up the core box after watching this and other reviews. I will be backing at the highest tier for the X-men version most likely. Thanks for the video guys.
How different the characters were was something that playing that initial set a lot really brought out, so I'm glad that's getting more notice with this review. The incredible amount of difference that the tweaking of the decks brought to each character and what their purpose is (support, tank, etc.) is fantastic. And I think the individual challenges of each box bring the difficulty up a half step, where getting rid of wilds raises it one full step. So there's a lot of fine tuning that you can do with this system, and that's amazing to me. The accessibility of the game is amazing, and is a BIG reason why I play this solo, where I play almost no other game solo.
played a ton on TTS with gamer buddies - just got my KS copy to play with my family and said buddies once pandemic lifts. we're doing a painting challenge to go thru them all as the minis are great and might be my favorite CMON minis yet. These minis with the bases are really a great touch and makes it feel complete. I can easily recommend the cheap base box and oh boy are those bosses different even just the base box.
Well said guys, I am thoroughly enjoying this game so far. The villains are harder than I thought they would be, each character feels different enough and the miniatures are AMAZING! Cant wait to get painting!
So, with this new Kickstarter up, is $100 for the base and Apocalypse a good buy? I can’t justify over $300 for everything at this time, but still interested in the game.
So this really is fomoware? If I want any of the expansions I'll have to buy them during a specific window when the next kickstarter is up? And if I'm interested in three or four of them, I can't just try one and then get a second and a third, right? I'll have to pay for them all at once? Why are people supporting this model?
Because they don’t want to miss out. For better or worse, the model obviously works financially. Hopefully the trend changes at some point. But I’m not going to not get a game I want just to make some kind of futile ‘point’.

@@danpsou I clarify that I think it’s Futile only from a game theory perspective, in that if you hope for there to be change based on your actions. It would require a pretty massive movement from gamers. So Futile only in that sense, as an individual. As a collective it would not be futile, but would require more coordination and outreach. On the other hand, if you simply don’t want to be an individual who supports it, that make sense. There’s nothing futile there in that you are not specifically trying to create change.
why was this kickstarter only? It seems to have mass market potential, what's the point of selling only the core box in retail... I'm puzzled. I also wonder if all the high praises and 9s were because y'all could afford to back everything and get a bunch of boxes shipped. I mean it's cool and everything but we're talking of A LOT of boxes with 4 miniatures and a few cards in each, it feels like a cash grab - could have put more stuff in a single box + expansion. If had 190 bucks to spend on a single game I'd probably get something meatier
Yeah, I don't think this is discussed enough. These sort of practices are creating a divide between people who can afford to pay this much all at once, and those who can't. The rationale is that this is a luxury hobby, and if you can't afford it, stick to something else, but being able to buy a little bit at a time was a real opportunity for most people.
You and danpsou definitely hit on a major point. Any game that requires this much investment to find its legs should be scaled appropriately. Marvel Champions was solid right from the base game, and new (optional) content compounds that material, and doesn’t just swap hero/villain elements. This game has a strong kid-vibe (nothing wrong with light games) but Kickstarter ONLY seems like a transparent effort to tickle FOMO for your kids.
@@robertbouley7697 yeah I mean let's be honest... Tom says he prefers it to Dice Masters but Dice Masters was 1$ for a booster pack with 2 dice and 3 cards. With 190$ you could get more than 2 full booster boxes worth of stuff, endless deckbuilding. I get it, this has minis, but they really are just toys because there is no spatial element except standing in locations. A lot of wasted real estate in those boxes...
@@notsaved To be clear, I love my Zombicide collection, to paint and play. But there were options for Kickstarter or retail. Starting out retail and then changing it up seems suspicious when they’re releasing 4+ expansions so close together.
@@robertbouley7697 well for sure, I love my Warhammer Quest: Cursed City too. That has 52 minis and a lot more cards & cardboard for a similar price point, but it's also a deeper game - Marvel United feels like they blinged up a 30$ entry level co-op game for the Kickstarter miniature crowd
I was really surprised by this game. I got the core box in the first wave of shipping and was kinda disappointed. I started regretting backing the whole thing, and was apprehensive as to what the expansions would add. The system felt kind of limited. That being said, the expansions arrived last week... and my group is absolutely loving it. The expansions have brought an insane amount of content, of variety of challenges, scaling difficulty and each hero/villain feels relatively unique & different all things considered. Super happy I backed it all, you can be sure I'm jumping into that X-Men train without a thought.

Both great points. That's why I backed out of the KS. I did pick up the base game cheap on Amazon for $15. My kids thought that it was just an okay game. It really shows the value when the retail price tanked and they have backed out their plans to sell any expansions in retail.

Just wondering if there’s any difference in the component quality between the Walmart release and the base game through Kickstarter. Do the cards still feel cheap?
Should I wait for the next Kickstarter, or will the next Kickstart likely supplement the core without forcing me to buy the core again? I was about to pick up the core and now I'm hesitant.
Really love the look and feel of this game, but can't justify getting it when IDW's TMNT and Batman BTAS Games check all the boxes these games do, with just a tiny bit more depth and fun coop (and one vs many) mechanics.

Since it all landed in my single shipping (waited a long time for the game with all its content) it has been played a lot. Is there better games out there? Sure... It's a fact! ...but how often does those games hit the table? ...that's the thing! It hits the table a lot! :) Wonderful game! At least for the family!
Yes, it's the core box you can find at retail, but this video is about the 6 expansions and a big box of exclusives that the all-in Kickstarter provided. If you're a retail customer, you won't have access to this content. You might be able to buy one of the expansions at retail. If you watched their first review, the biggest complaint was the game lacking legs. From this video they really make it clear that the game won't be fun for very long without a lot more content. If you're interested in this, buy the core box and try it. If want more, then buy the Into the Spiderverse expansion (if it actually comes to retail). Then, if you still want more, consider backing the X-Men Kickstarter. There's no reason to go chasing the Kickstarter content for this version though unless you're a collector. You'll be able to getting much more content for much cheaper with the X-Men Kickstarter.
After finally trying it, the game is ok, nothing amazing and definitely for families mainly, there is not a lot of depth here. The core box on it's own doesn't have enough replay value in it and I'm not sure I can recommend hundreds of pounds to get enough content to spice it up. These little game mode tweaks should have been in the base game but of course CMON did the ting of breaking up the base set into DLC and charging a ton for it. ........and the Iron man sculpt broke after two plays.....
Got to say I have some non backer regret now after listening to this. For me it looked too simple to be fun and the characters and villains would just be more stuff and not need half of it. Oh well

How much of this game can fit into one box? For me, multiple expansion boxes is a real turn-off. Is there a box that holds everything? How much can fit in the base box if you toss the insert?

Some constructive criticism. It seems like you have started to artificially move the discussion clockwise by always asking the next one a specific question. I have noticed it in a few of the recent videos. I might be alone in this but it feels very artificial to me. I have always liked these reviews with all of you because they feel like a group of friends just talking freely about a boardgame. But this new enforced structure makes it feel scripted and artificial to me.
Agreed. I think they do it because it’s the easiest way to avoid talking over each other when they aren’t in the same place. Hopefully once COVID is over, they’ll sit at the same table again and it won’t be an issue anymore.
@@alecgalbraith5604 You are probably right. But I only started noticing it the last few weeks. And I never thought it was that big of a problem before. sure they sometime talked over each other a bit when online because of the delay but I actually prefer that. it sounds more natural.
@@Vascariz That is completely fair. I just never thought it was a problem before. I remember them being quite good at getting everyone involved without it feeling artificial. But that could just be me not noticing anyone got left out.
United. By far. I never like Legendary though, so it’s not a hard question. But I genuinely enjoyed the 3 games of United I’ve played so far. Looking forward to playing more.
I should add, I’ve tried Legendary more than a few times with several different themes. None of them are games I like. Clearly I just dislike the system, which is surprising since I like other deck builders that aren’t too different a lot.
Lots of folks are “too mature” to like cute things. In my case, I also am not a fan of the particular style they went with for the chibi look, it’s just a tad too angular for my tastes? Still, the game helped me get over it super fast, since it’s so great I don’t care lol.
I actually find the built in solo mode (shield mode I think it's called) to be one of the best solo conversions I've seen to a board game. 3 players seems to be the right count for this game and it sets it up really well for this game.
Wow some high scores, you've certainly made me very interested in how it plays and I want to try it but for me those models and the style here for me make it a hard pass on buying. I dislike them so very very much. :(
‘New’ is seldom rewarded historically in games. It’s usually the games that refine it that get all the praise. Dune II was arguably the first RTS game (with inspirations pulled from another game that could also be called the first), but it wasn’t until Warcraft did it that it really became standard. There’s obviously exceptions to this, such as Dominion, where the game to do it first managed to sustain popularity, but I think that’s the exception rather than the rule.
This game just doesn't draw me in. I am not a fan of the toon art work for the heroes/ villains. If they were more like the comic books I would be into it.
It’s pretentious to think light games are disqualified from being ‘gamers’ games’. Roy did folks a service by giving this game some scope while the other three came in a little heavy-handed with Kickstarter exclusives.
@@robertbouley7697 the title is Marvel United with EVERYTHING, the xpacs have some of the best new aditions like Sinister Six, Thanos Campaign and the Plan B cards. How can you do an informed review of everything if he didn't play with any xpac? It reminded me when in school there's a group assigment and then you have to present it, well Roy is the guy that didn't do the homework and is just standing there...
@@Leiderg You’re right about the title. My beef extends beyond this review and is more with the commercial practices I see here (which wasn’t given due attention). For what it’s worth I think Roy played those expansions, but doesn’t usually include them in his personal space with his kids. That would lower the quality of his review for people attending this video.
I don't care for how much you have to pay for the expansions... well, based on greedy eBay sellers and greedy CMON. It OVERPRICED. PERIOD... for such a simple game. They're really milking this series. What's next? 1 Char, 12 cards... $25+... yeah that's probably next.
