I thought Dan's attitude of conserving calories and doing as little as possible was pretty boring but also refreshing, especially compared to some other contestant nut-cases that where doing an exercise routine. I remember thinking at the time that it seemed like a solid tactic but at the same I did not want him to win because of it. It could have led to future contestants doing something similar. Also, he was honest about what his tactic was and his motivation. he wanted the cash and made that clear.
@FowlersMakeryandMischief
@FowlersMakeryandMischief 6 лет назад
Ya the conserving calories tactic gets a bad wrap becuse of the layabouts on Naked and afraid. He did plenty and you can see it on the show in the background. my thinging is it was a mistake to talk about it the way he did. Needid to sell it to the viewers better and he would have been Exalted as a genius
@Zanzubaa
@Zanzubaa 6 лет назад
Yes it is obvious he was still working hard but he just cut down on tasks that he saw more as a frivolous waste of energy and he worked slower to be more energy efficient. As you said selling it better would have been the way to go for sure. I bet the editing did not help him either. Some of those people on Naked and Afraid =p Thanks for replying to my comment anyway Grand Master Wizard Fowler, I appreciate it, I am sure you are very busy.

Much respect for Dan and his approach and mentality for the show. People think they can do something like this right off the couch...they would have a rude awakening once they were dropped off. Great job on the interview and thanks for sharing!

I've met Dan a few times in his capacity as a survival/bushcraft instructor. He is an awesome guy. His channel has great content on a wide variety of outdoors activities. This was a great behind the scenes interview giving his point of view of his time on Alone season 3. Thanks.

ya a lot of people felt that way and after spending time with him i can say that is all in the edit. He is a very i dont know what you would call it gruff or manly man. But not the villain he appeared to be on tv. And had we seen more of his adventureIt it would've made more sense.

Where's the rest? I've been hoping so much to hear from Dan. I think after the show, and the way they made him look, he didn't want to talk about it. I'd love to hear more from him if you can get him to talk Zac. He's got a great story to tell yet I think

I have a question to the people who have been on Alone or in similar situations. A lot of people bring bows and slingshots, and a lot of people seem to set snares and build traps. But from what I've seen or read online, these items seem to very rarely pay off. The absolutely vast majority of the protein people get comes from fish. Is it still worth carrying sligshots/slingbows, bow and arrows or any similar hunting weapon? Or would it potentially be more useful to swap them for another item?
@FowlersMakeryandMischief
@FowlersMakeryandMischief 6 лет назад
I think its still worth it if you were to get somting with a bow you would be well fed and your reputation would blow up. being well fed means you can last longer
@BadManiac
@BadManiac 6 лет назад
Fowler's Makery and Mischief Certainly IF you get something with it, yes, but that seems to be a really big IF. Hence my asking. Thanks for taking the time to reply.
@Zanzubaa
@Zanzubaa 6 лет назад
Well that is the harsh wilderness environment for you. If you go to Mcdonalds you KNOW you can leave with a burger. Hunting or trapping a boar successfully is a series of big IFs. If I am not mistaken no one on the show has pulled it off yet. Obviously if they did, it would feed them for at least a least a week. I guess it is down to personal preference if you want to take something like a bow or trapping wire. I think I would rather take a multiple use utility item that could be used to hunt. Fowler took his shovel and used that to dig that big hole with spikes in. Could have worked.
@FowlersMakeryandMischief
@FowlersMakeryandMischief 6 лет назад
ya big if but since we cant tale Duplicate items That big yet if it paid off Is almost worth more than all of her other items Combined. The only thing I could think that would be better to take Might be a gillnet If I was by the ocean.
@FowlersMakeryandMischief
@FowlersMakeryandMischief 6 лет назад
Ya and next time the plan is the slingbow to that will have at least 3 uses fishing, big game hunting, and still work as a slingshot for small game. Also I have a casting Rig in mind with the slingshot. Not that that's necessary but it would look cool on tv ;)

I hadn't heard much of Dan's experience. He is a big fellow. lost 50+ pounds and still weighed 80 pounds more than my max weight of 150. I can see both his and your strategies of doing and doing but slow.

in most areas, if you shred and roast or fry cambium, it will REALLY bait in ducks and gulls. Use the treblehooks to catch and drown them. Use their guts as bait. The netting can make traps for birds, crabs, fish and mammals. Just overlap the 3" mesh, tying every other mesh, until you get the size of mesh that you require. While critters can easily figure out that they should gnaw on one cord that has them by the leg, they are much less capable of gnawing thru many layers of mesh. Keep your traps within 50m of where you always stay/go, so you dont waste time and effort servicing your line. Typically, it takes a month of making small brushpiles around your camp, baiting same, then assembling the netting boxtraps, baiting each step, before traps will produce,but if ice has ruined the fishing, making such animal traps is the obvious thing to do.

Antimicrobial fabric on underwear keeps smell and bacteria build up from happening. Same as the socks and compression gear that athletes wear . You can wear it for a few days before you stink in a situation where you cant change clothes. Also having underwear that separates your jewels from the sausage to avoid sticking and sweating nuggets.

you only caught 9 fish, and you're happy with having taken a hank of paracord instead of a 2 person paracord hammock, made of 9 strand 750 cord, out of which you could have woven 200 sq ft per day (half a day) of 3" mesh netting? Do you realize how many more fish you could have been catching? Over lap some of the mesh a few times, and it's small enough to trap crayfish, overlap it once and it will hold magpies and crows. You could have caught 100x as much poundage of flesh food. Would have changed a lot, eh?

forget the paul bunyan stuff (ie, axe.) Alan won without one, and Carleigh went 86 days without one. Obviously, then, it's not needed. Forget the ferrorod. Start your first fire with firerolling a chunk of your T-shirt.. Once you have ashes, charred punkwood, dry-bags (tarp and tape) , tinder, starting other fires is easy with any hard, sharp stone and any carbon steel tool. You can bank a fire in ashes and maintain its viability far longer than any period that you're going to sleep under such conditions. So needing to light a fire "from scratch" is something that should occur rarely (since you wont be moving around much). A large McElroy type pump-drill is quite viable, too, made in half a day. The bow drill sucks. If you blow off the axe and the ferrorod, right there you have the ability to take the hammock and the duct tape. If you take a modified Crunch and a Silky saw blade to be held in the visegrip, you can blow off taking the saw, which lets you take one ration of mixed pemmican and gorp, which let you get started fishing right away, not having to waist a day looking for bait, Condor now makes an e-tool with a saw edge, which can be modified to give you a real saw kerf.

you had plenty of gear from which to make a pontoon raft. Chunks of tarp, the rainsuit pants, one set of clothing (waterproof spray before you go) the camera case, your gaiters.the backpack. That nobody chose to take the miraculously useful duct tape was quite telling. :-) Stuff those items with (force dried if need be) debris, and assemble an outrigger pontoon raft in a day.
@FowlersMakeryandMischief
@FowlersMakeryandMischief 6 лет назад
plenty of gear but not a lot of wood . we were not alould to cut down trees over a sertin size and the rest was rottin or dense drift wood that didnt flot well. greg made a raft and it was not all that usfull.

Hi. I am particularly interested in Dan's comment regarding a lot of stuff we do in the Bushcraft community is novelty type stuff, and in a true situation you wouldn't apply it. I was wondering if Dan might elaborate on that point a little? Thanks. I have watched Dan's channel for a while now and like his stuff. I have to confess I have never actually seen a single episode of Alone, and did not know that Dan was on it.
