Matthew introduces you to his friend Ernest, a guy with a ton of GM experience and a 1989 IROC Camaro that is an excellent comparison with the 93 Mustang "Fridge" project. They discuss starting modifications and parts for the Camaro, tuning strategies, tuning hardware and software, and make an initial dyno pass to establish a baseline before modifying the Camaro.
Stay tuned to the series for dyno results on common modifications to the Camaro and comparison's to similar modifications and tuning on the Foxbody Mustang.

My 87 LX with MT and some basic bolt on mods (pulleys, 355 gears, catted Magnaflow cat back, Lakewood 70/30s) dyno'd at 239 HP at the wheels. It has smoked a couple of 90s+ Firebirds/TAs with the 350 ci engines.

My personal opinion has always been that the EFI Foxbody Mustang is the reason for the EFI performance world of today, and that it was a more important car than the TPI Camaro, but I know lots of guys see it the other way and as I have gotten older I have gotten much less brand prejudiced. I even own one GM product in my stable these days. It is fun to look at these classic rivals together, and it's fun to have a little back and forth with a hard core GM guy like Ernest who has been a friend for a long time too. Hopefully we will get a live going this summer with the two of us to talk about these cars and answer viewer questions.

Why the SCDP base? Planning on going with Vortec heads? The TPIS Big Mouth/Edelbrock 3860 or Accel would flow better if you plan on keeping stock heads. Also on the Camaro you can remove the baffles in the plastic air intake to help, on my 88' GTA I added the SLP cold air box. Also for better driving performance a Corvette servo could help it shift a bit better. I'm really looking forward to this series as I have a old school TPI build with TPIS BM base, AS&M runners, ported/gasket matched plenum, Holley AFPR, 52mm TB w/ Airfoil of course, SLP air box, 180 t-stat and a performance tune among other small things, those mods really woke up my L98.

I just sold my 1988 iroc-z that only had 72 thousand miles with the 5.7 tpi totally stock . Would of been perfect for this test. I also have a 90 mustang gt and a 91 Rs with a 350 swap 6 speed . I love both configurations of these cars!

You have a nice stable! Ernest’s car had a few more mods than I was lead to believe initially, but it is still working out to be a good comparison. Thanks for watching!

LOL back in the early 90's I use to bust GM's 350 Iroc's, Trans AM/Formula's, Vetts and GN with my 88 notchback mustang and all of the GM's cars I race weren't stock either. I had pullies, home made ram air, shorty headers, H pipe, Flowmasters mufflers, 3.73 gears, ported throttle body and bump up timing. My best time at the drag strip with horrible Goodyear Gatorback tires was a 13.64 @ 101. I got my car from a Florida State Trooper auction. It use to a highway patrol car so you know my car was lightweight. It didn't have power windows and mirrors but it had heavy duty parts such as radiator, belts and alternator. A lot of mustang guys back then had issues with spinning coming of the line but I use to remove my rear springs to transfer more weight to my rear and it worked. My car was lowered 2inches and it was easy to just jack up the rear and pull out the rear springs before I would race somebody. The car would hook and go. Oh before I changed my rear gears from 3.08 to 3.73 I use to be able to hang with the Vetts and Irocs/Trans Am's on top end. My speedo went up to 140mph and I use bury the needle. My friend had 89 350 GTA and we ran up to 148mph side by side.

I never feared the 350 Chevies with my coupe either. Actually removing the rear springs and driving it is one of the craziest things I have ever heard, and I thought you had a typo or autocorrect at first! After rereading your comment, I’m still not sure what to think of that part, but the rest of it sounds right to me!

@@tecmotiondyno For me removing the rear springs help with hooking up on street tires. It was only good for street racing or at the drag strip. Riding with out rear springs on the street was not a good idea. I tried it once and my car was bouncing around.

On the upper intake behind the throttle body there are two large casting nubs that restrict the air coming into the intake. They can be sanded down with a dremmel to increase air flow. This mod with a cam it usually adds a few 3-7 hp on the top end. Its a old school free mod that works.

Hmmm.... Well from a chassis standpoint a Foxbody/SN95 has a way of making a Fbody feel tight and modern. (which it's not) I've never owned a GEN3 Fcar, but have owned LS Juan Fcars, and I own a 88 GT, and have owned several SN95/NE cars, but a GEN3 Fbody is largely a GEN4 Fbody from a chassis standpoint other than it uses a mcpherson strut setup up front, where the GEN4 uses a SLA setup. No good reason not to go LS with a clean GEN3 car. Great swap for Foxbodys as well unless you're a brand purist. I prefer the Foxbody look and huge aftermarket, plus most any engine you'd want to put in one will fit under it's hood, but again I'm not a GEN3 Fbody expert as much as I am with a Foxbody or GEN4 Fbody. Fbody exhaust routing sucks compared to Foxbody EDIT: BTW I prefer SBF over SBC until you get to GEN3 SBC. (LS)

I always felt the pushrod Windsor style Ford's were a better engine than the classic 350 Chevies, and in fact I never worried about the displacement disadvantage on the strip, but the LS is a great engine, and the cynical among us usually consider it to be an evolution of the Ford Windsor series. Certainly the LS engines have more in common with a Ford Windsor than they do with the earlier SBC. I always viewed the Foxbody as a blank canvas for you to paint your own picture on. The stock cars are anemic and have a horribly flexible chassis, but there are so many parts out there that you can make them into anything you want, including a winning road race car, a drag strip terror, or an appearance part Sunday cruiser if that's your thing, and it didn't cost a fortune to do it.

Why would you not compare apples to apples using a 305 IROC? The 350 of course will make more power on the dyno than a 5.0 Mustang.
@tecmotiondyno
@tecmotiondyno Год назад
The Camaro is heavier too. And the one Ernest has is a 350. Dyno comparison results are coming in future videos of course, but I would guess these cars as just about a dead heat as they sit today.

Camaro were always faster, but Mustang always had more potential in tuning & mods. Camaro were more sleek & aerodynamic, but Mustang always known for comfort & practical.

I disagree! "Camaros were always faster"....? I gapped 305 IROC-Zs ALL the time with my '85 GT 5.0 5 speed. I ran heads up with 5.7 IROC-Zs. The 5.7s ran out of breath by 5,000 rpm. Still own my '85 GT, except now it has a 363 and a 6 speed.
