DISCLAIMER I want to start off by saying, I am a HUGE bird lover! Anyone who knows me well, knows that I always respect the birds natural environment but you don't always know what you are getting into when you head to the park for a fly... In saying that, I/we always take extra care not to harass or aggravate wildlife and no magpies were harmed in the process of filming this video.
Now that is out of the way... During spring/summer nesting season it was almost impossible to find an open space that wasn't dominated by a territorial Magpie. I have spent a lot of time flying drones and I am one of the lucky pilots who hasn't had many altercations with birds. I have never had a drone intercepted by a bird, but I get chased pretty often. This is the first time getting chased in FPV mode, so it felt very much like the movie TOP GUN with the Magpie being the Russian MIG fighters. The Magpie got a good work-out and never even came close to catching the drone in the wind. You could see the Magpie learning the flight-path and trying to predict where the drone would go to compensate.
We are out of nesting season now so hopefully we can have a bit more freedom in the sky!
