Printer Settings:
For printing the Orca V2 I used the FLSUN Super Racer that has a Bowden tube. These are the settings I used to slice my own STL files in Cura. The only settings you should need to adjust from these are individual printer settings like retraction and priming. There is also a slicing table at the bottom of the PDF, that outlines the few parts that need different top and bottom layers and infill settings. It also has the weights listed on the PDF to check your weights against.

Some very clever ideas in the design of the Orca (v2) Craycle build. Such attention to design details on the prop spinner (2:52), location/mounting of servos (3:27), canopy latches (3:50), control surface hinges (4:55). Great camera work, and editing. Like how you find ways to keep new build videos fresh and interesting.

ZOHD KoPilot would be nice in this, since that prop setup is so sketchy for hand launching. You can put it at 1/2 throttle and just throw it any way that's comfortable and it won't throttle up until its a few feet away from you. When I bought my 3D printer, I intended on trying a plane. The more I saw, the less I liked them. Take forever to print, and the end result was heavy and fragile -this is the first one I've seen that I really want to try. Thanks for vid!
@TroyMcMillan
@TroyMcMillan 2 года назад
Thats a cool autopilot system! I may have to give that one a try! As far as 3D printing airplanes goes, I thought the same thing when I first started building planes. They have come a long way since then, some great filaments have come out and the designs are so improved - fast printing, and durability while still lightweight. You should definitely give it a try now! 😊

I have printed and built 2 of these and, It is pretty well known that you cannot glue TPU to PLA with regular CA. I used the same CA you did and I had 2 problems. 3 of the 4 glued hinge points pulled out without a lot of effort. Also if I do it just like you did, the hinges will be very stiff from extra glue. You don't even flex them in the video. You need to use Loctite 406 for gluing tpu to pla.

So cool, love the design, the overall form and details are fantastic. I recently saw a video about DARPA experimental craft that have no actuated control surfaces and it reminded me of years ago I did a very basic pen and paper design for a flying wing with four slat outlets on the wing two on the upper surface two on lower, upper and lower offset (upper outlets outboard, lower inboard or some other combination). Four electric motors one for each set of outlets. There is an interior geometry that directs the flow from motors to slats and all thrust is through the slats. By changing output to each and a lot of experimenting maybe pitch, yaw and roll control could be achieved. The complex geometry of the wing and interior flow chambers is best manufactured by 3D printing the forms. Troy I’d appreciate your thoughts on whether this is feasible from a DIY 3D print manufacturing standpoint. I need to do more work as this is essentially just a concept but I like the idea of a no flap craft and precise software control of thrust for flight control.

I absolutely love the build and I've been thinking of printing a plane myself in the past. Unfortunately, RC planes don't go well since they are brittle when 3D printed. My favorite design is a mix between EPP and 3D printed parts.

absolutely not brittle if you print them correctly
@DaveSmith-cp5kj
@DaveSmith-cp5kj Год назад
@@antonioesposito8071 It doesn't matter the print quality. FDM induces tension in the material which is what makes it a lot more brittle and less durable than other model building materials. That being said, salt fusing does fix this issue for most parts.
@antonioesposito8071
@antonioesposito8071 Год назад
@@DaveSmith-cp5kj are you new to this? salt fusion does not work with these kind of pieces. By the way every material is a tradeoff, you want EPP? durable but forget complex geometry, you want balsa? light, durable ma you have to be billionaire. You want FDM? more fragile but super economic and infinite geometry possibility
@DaveSmith-cp5kj
@DaveSmith-cp5kj Год назад
@@antonioesposito8071 Are you new to this? Salt fusing literally was made for this kind of application. Complexity is pointless without design. So far we have not encountered a need where AM's capabilities can exceed the performance of traditional materials. The whole application of 3D printed RC parts as of now is ease of fabrication. If you are strictly performance oriented, AM is not the way to go.

Got to be honest from my point of view, i have a couple of rc planes and a couple of printers etc. I think 3d printing planes is great way to go but id like to see it more from a repair stand point. I think many 3d printed planes are showing off the benefits of using printing such as exact thin airfoil section, high internal volume, accurate swept fuselages...however ive been flying ec for a while, most of my planes seem to get more hangar rash and odd crashes on launch or landing...so instead of a nore complex 3d printed plane, what would be awesome is to even just have a 'normal plane' like a bush mule, nano talon, talon, trainer etc, where damaged parts can be reprinted and replaced using small fasteners etc...so i can maintain my fleet. Its likely in this area that ill work towards my own designs. Thanks
@karlonadkins1579
@karlonadkins1579 2 года назад
With a little bit of creativity this plane could just click together without any glue. You could easily replace parts that way. Even if someone was able to just 3D print 3 different style wings and a couple different style tail wings you could come up with a basic fuselage out of balsa or foam board. Or maybe even create a few different style fuselages that the wings would all easily attach to… I mean kinda like Flite Test but 3D printed in your own home.

Hey Troy. What Delta printer are you using? Looks great. Would you recommend it?
@TroyMcMillan

its an FLSUN super racer, and I would absolutely recommend it! they are coming out with a new delta printer soon though, and it will be direct drive so maybe hold out for that one!

Cool build. Is it possible to put 4G on the plane and fly long range? Thank you.
@TroyMcMillan
@TroyMcMillan 2 года назад
technically yeah as long as you have the reception and video feed you can fly as far as you'd like!

Nice .I'm getting this bad boy! But what happens if the servo goes bad? Looks like u might have to print a new plane
@craycle
@craycle 2 года назад
Servo Service Hatches are comes with the wing and you have to cut its tiny connections to break servo hatch from the wing if you need to replace servo. So you can replace your servos :D Sorry for the missing information on the PDF. We will add this detail.
@TroyMcMillan
@TroyMcMillan 2 года назад
Exactly as Craycle said, you can just cut out the servo cover, replace the servo, and then you can either glue the cover back in place or even leave it off

Is it possible to do reverse thrust for VTOL? Reverse thrust to climb and hover, then dive into forward thrust for flight. Opposite for landing
@TroyMcMillan
@TroyMcMillan 2 года назад
there are ways to add reverse thrust with a special esc, but I don't know how well this plane would hover!
