My take on a forgotten beauty. Two of my dearest friends are in the credits, Vicki Lester of the blog Beguiling Hollywood and her handsome husband, Mr. Lester. Check out the wonderful Blog about classic Hollywood here. vickielester.com/

Oh Lanier, I so love your videos. Especially this one. This fragrance was one I bought for my late father. He passed away 26 years ago. Besides 'Old Spice' (he had worn it since college), Bowling Green would be worn when I would come home from college. What a kind and thoughtful man he was. Thank you for bringing the memories back to me.

I wore it a lot back in the day. Initially, it was a gift from my maternal auntie Ena because she fell in love with the scent while shopping on base (McChord Air Force Base) back in the day. I had been wearing Grey Flannel for years, but this scent was lovely for spring and summer. I loved it and was saddened that it was discontinued. And bring back Kenzo Tokyo too!

As a teen my dad had a bottle of this that got used by me frequently. Was my favorite scent as a teen. Not that I had a lot to choose from back then. It is a all time favorite for me. Too bad it was discontinued.

The video production of your intro's are beautiful. Contextualizes fragrance beautifully. I'm a big fan of Bowling Green (unlike the rougher Grey Flannel) because it is substantially close to the Drakkar Noir DNA. So my bottle of Bowling Green sits on the same shelf as my other Drakkar Noir similars: Houbigant Duc de Vervins L'Extreme, Ceasars Man, Dakar by Al-Rehab, Lomani Pour Homme, Taxi. My SOTD is the new Maison Martin Margiela Replica fragrance When the Rain Stops.

Since you mentioned Houbigant Duc de Vervins L'Extreme that has piqued my interest. I;m going to have to explore that. I do rather like the original. Cheers.

I agree that it is in the same family as those fragrances. A couple others are Gillette Cool Wave (deodorant, aftershave, etc.) and La Toja aftershave splash (in an 8-oz green bottle).

I’m a “Ralph Lauren” guy so the videography really resonates with me. I love classic photos and the country club/Hollywood vibe. I’ve had Bowling Green and worn it since high school. It was always affordable and accessible. I could go to the nearest drug store and buy a bottle at a great price. Sadly, Bowling Green has been discontinued. A few years ago I bought 2 bottles with the intention of using one and saving the other as a back up bottle. I believe I spent roughy $15 for each bottle ($30). I recently discovered that this fragrance is discontinued and on EBay is being sold for as high as $80+. 😂. I’m so glad I bought an extra bottle because it just wouldn’t sit well knowing I’d have to spend nearly 5 times what I paid just to get another bottle.

I second the Spotify suggestion from Liev. I quit watching the Oscars several years ago, and the recent event confirms my decision. Besides, too many of the dresses were simply about attention any way one can get it rather than couture. Rip Audrey, Cary and the fabulous Edith, Orry & Adrian!

Another classic from my Oxford days. For you guys across the pond a real Ivy League scent. For me it is a quintessential preppy fragrance that lends itself to white Oxford shirts and Polo Ralph Lauren jumpers. Great video as always thanks Lanier.
@laniersmith1798
@laniersmith1798 2 года назад
Exactly what I get from it. Oxford, Cambridge, Belgravia in late Spring. The Hamptons, Hillsborough, Montauk in July. Summer whites, and formal dances at the Country Club, and in the Fall, Fair Isle jumpers and corduroy slacks. Jaunts in a Jaguar or MG for a late August picnic. ... I wish I had said all of that in my review LOL. Cheers Mark!

@@laniersmith1798 Great sprayer and bottle. I definitely get a vintage New England country club vibe that makes me smile as I catch whiffs throughout the day. It could almost be a classier summer flanker of Drakkar Noir. BG has so many notes that it is amazing that they are blended so well with no sharpness. Excellent find! Now you have me wanting St John's Bay Rum as well lol.

I would describe Bowling Green as related to Drakkar Noir (albeit with a lighter and less dense character) as well as Gillette Cool Wave aftershave and the green La Toja aftershave splash. It is more sophisticated than any of those, but somewhat comparable.

I love the stuff, especially the pine-lavender combo. Really surprised me the first couple of times I wore it. Definitely some very interesting imagery Lanier! Personally, I'm often reminded of a Sherlock Holmes-esque character - perhaps an early 1900s british professor in a tweed blazer. Or the country-club younger brother of Dunhill for men? 🎾

So happy to see you enjoyed Bowling Green. Surprised you got it and reviewed it so quickly! I know what frag I'll be using tomorrow! You should have been an east coast man. I can see you at Tanglewood on a summer evening, on a lawn chair with a tennis sweater tied round your shoulders listening to the Boston Symphony play Tchaichovsky. I recently discovered another spring cheapie-- Acqua Essenziale Colonia by Salvatore Ferragamo. A brilliant Italian style colonia with fantastic depth. You might enjoy that one as well.

Still intrigued- however a year later and now and a new 4oz bottle is going for $80. Such is the sway you have on the market, Mr. Smith ;-). Won't hold you to this but what say you? Is it worth the $80 price tag?
@laniersmith1798
@laniersmith1798 Год назад
I see it ranges between $25 and $80 dollars now on eBay. Back in 1985 it probably ran for between $65 and $75 dollars which translates to roughly between $185 and $209 when inflation it taken into account. But for you, I would suggest going for the lower price on Ebay just to check it out. I paid around $30 for my bottle on Ebay. Let me know what you decide, and I hope you like it Rich. Cheers and thanks for your comment.
@richp.738
@richp.738 Год назад
@@laniersmith1798 Thank you so much- this was hugely helpful context! The $25 seem to be mostly smaller cologne splashes which I don't fancy as much. For other types of fragrances I prob would try those first but when it comes to green scents I tend to fall into the "take my money" category :). Which is to say I'm fairly sure I'll like the accord- my bigger concern was quality of the juice. I'm still new-ish, don't know Geoffrey Beane from Adam, and didn't want to end up with an $80 bottle of Skin Bracer (no offense intended to that beloved cheapie :) At any rate, thanks again. I'll let you know how it goes!

@@richp.738 A little about Geoffrey Beene: Beene founded his firm, Geoffrey Beene, Inc., in New York City in 1963, in partnership with Teal Traina's Leo Orlandi in a Seventh Avenue showroom. A year later, he was awarded the Coty American Fashion Critics' Award, one of the most prestigious awards in fashion. His first collection was featured on the cover of Vogue Magazine. In his 1970 collection, Beene applied the use of inexpensive fabrics such as sweatshirt and denim fabric for evening dresses. Introduced in 1971, the Beene Bag line of women’s wear used the same silhouettes as his couture line. By the mid-1970s, Beene had a number of licensing agreements for products such as eyeglasses and bed sheets, and also his most famously known cologne called Grey Flannel, launched in 1975. It contains notes of orange, lemon, rose, geranium, sandalwood and cedar wood, and is considered a classic men's fragrance winning a FIFI Award in 1976. In 1976, Beene became the first American designer to show a collection in Milan, Italy. This success led to his sixth Coty Award in 1977, for giving impetus to American fashion abroad. In 1982, Beene received his eighth Coty Award; the most awarded to any one designer. Rich now you know him from Adam. Keep me posted on your progress with fragrance. Cheers
