This book is Awesome! I love the Lean-To-Shed the most (page 98). The plan ru-vid.comUgkxe9yi0sulKgsp0VJJCIrLWWkvVqcU7LFR is to attach it to the back of my brick house. I also like how they walk you through the many different steps of construction, which is important for the less experienced like me.

Good carpenters crown their studs. Great carpenters make sure all their studs stand the same way the tree did.

Jaime, you were absolutely correct about the Japanese tree orientation. They also place them on the same side of the structure to correlate with the side of the mountain that the tree grew on. South side of the mountain = south side of the structure.

Post should be placed same as direction of growth because of density. Closer to the base the greater the density which gives greater support.

If you know a sheet metal guy he can sheer you off 1" strips of metal for stirrup straps on the ridge. The stirrup goes over the ridge and you screw into the undersie of your rafter. Metal loves tension and they will put all the pull at the top onto the ridge beam. Gravity also forces the stirrup to pull in at the bottom of your rafter strap, but also allows you to move the bottom of your rafters in or out until you hurricane strap them in at the bottoms. 22 gauge is plenty of strong straps for the stirrup. Your rafter will snap before the stirrup even reaches a quarter of its load capacity on a 15' long rafter.

Great roof framing tips. Gosh, it must be nice to have man power. In the old days, workers were scare that knew how to frame, and most of the time you were pulling 2x12 rafter up yourself, ouch, back attack. You brothers have paid your dues building with your Dad, and now can enjoy the reputation, and money that goes into building in custom locations. Hat off to you.

@ChrisDarjany

It actually is legit. Japanese carpenters do it. Also, dropping the post will probably help it stay straighter over time. This can be done to stabilize wood when building furniture, table lees, etc… why not an 8X8?
