I enjoy how you all work together. In an earlier video your mom and dad talked about activities and how they enjoy watching you all work out problems you encounter while working on these building. I have to say, you all work so well and are supportive of each other. You all are every teacher's dream classroom. The practical applications you have learned are great life lessons. How much can the earthbags hold before it caves in from the pressure from the earth, soil? I'm planning to build kind of an earth ship, and most of it will be underground. So i wonder what kind of loads this structure can take. Great vids by the way. Thank you from Denmark :-)

the 2x10's need blocking because the plywood does not have the sheer strength. This is something you could add from the underside. It makes the floor safer. If you do not want to "burn" another 2x10, you can actually use straps, but it's a little late to add straps.

in the future try a water level for projects like this. long clear 1/2" vinyl tube mostly filled with water, vented on both ends. great for marking out odd shaped builds.

mylittlehomestead'ers, I subscribed a few years ago while looking for rocket stoves and though I never heard of earth bag building before I have been enjoying your earth bag projects ever since. I would like to know how the durability of your earlier earth bag buildings has been and what kind of maintenance they have required.

+rheniformer We have not had any failures due to bag failure. We have had to adjust the cob mixture to include some cement for some applications.

How did you overcome building code regulations? Did your region already allow earth bag homes? I want to build variations of earthbag/earthship homes with or without basements... in Halifax NS, where container homes are still illegal.. any advice? Thanks!

Wait, so you did a 90 degree turn on the floor joist direction to finish off the sides of the floor. Did you double up on that last joist running in the main direction, the one that you hung the other joists off of? Because it looked like you had a single to me, which means you've got significantly more load on that last single than on any other joist beside it.

+Emerson White Yes and yes. I will be putting pressure blocking in between the perpendicular joist. The span is short and the perpendicular joist are supported by cleats and cement blocks. Also I be placing blocking down the center of the span.

Umm .. did you use joist hangers to attach the perpendicular side joists to their main joist? Kinda looks like they were just butted up against it.

There's 3,876,567 old homes with no joist hangers out there, It'll be ok.

John D Most of those old homes have walls that are a lot more rigid than earth bags. Anything built with earthbags has a rolling shifting character to it and joist hangers become a lot more important.

are you planning to block under the joyces in the cleats? or are you going to trust the nails to hold up the weight of the floor?

Compression blocking and earth bags between the joist. The floor has no weight other than its own and whatever furniture is on it. No walls or roof set on the floor.

when you sistered the joists did you also use glue or just nails? My understanding is that glue makes for a superior long term bond.

The plan is to powerblock. That is a system that places a 14.5 in block between each joist at the "sister" joint. This reinforce the connection and double the carrier joist across the span.

I am not sure that answers the question. You have joined several pairs of joists to create single beams. We saw you nailing them together. What i didn't see wws whether you also used glue to bind them together. Glue forms a superior bond to just nails.

+GrismCrew Martin We tested our soil for clay and have a good 20% or better clay content. Our soil also has a large amount of calcium. Just dirt, clay and calcium...all in one pile of dirt. That is our dirt in the American SW.
