I would say Bulgaria and Romania historically rank about the same in world football. Bulgaria has had the better World Cup record - while both have qualified 7 times, all of Bulgaria’s appearances have been since 1962 whereas three of Romania’s appearances were in the pre-WW2 period. Until Hagi came along, Romania had qualified only once (1970) since the war. In addition, Bulgaria’s best record is the semi-final; Romania’s - quarterfinals. Romania has had the better record in the Euros but I don’t view the Euros nearly as highly as the World Cup. Romania’s Steaua, however, won the European Cup in 1986 (despite failing to qualify to that year’s World Cup, while Bulgaria did) and made it to another final in 1989 while Bulgaria’s leading club in the tournament CSKA never made it that far. So in balance about the same, although I feel Romania gets more respect internationally. As a Bulgarian I also feel completely hopeless about the future of Bulgarian football and my guess is Romania’s outlook is better.
@Foudefoot85 Yes, it is important that Romania has more wins and it is a good point. Romania indeed won games and advanced past the group stage in its last three WC appearances. However, to me it’s a bigger factor that Bulgaria has more appearances since WW2 and in its best showing reached the semifinals after beating defending champion Germany while Romania in its best showing (at the same tournament) was stopped at the quarterfinals by Sweden. It’s just my opinion on the relative weight of each factor. All in all, Romania probably deserves to be a little ahead in the all time rankings because of its greater achievements at the club level by Steaua. One last sad fact - neither country has made it to the World Cup since 1998 :(.
Bravo braco Bugari! Only what could be better..if this goal was cored after that match France-Ireland when France cheeted and took Irish place on WC. Bravo Kostadinov!
Bulgaria needed this win and '94 World Cup finals as this team was unique and will never rise again. It was gonna be such a waste if they had lost to France. Eric Cantona is one of my favourite players of all times and the French players were indeed great players but the Bulgarian budget is way lower than the French budget. France proved they can rise in just 4 years with old and new players they became champions. An impossible task for Bulgaria with their budget and corruption kicked in after the year 2000.
Da BEST !!! Da Best ! Da Best !
... one BIG DAY for beautiful BULGARIA :) I love this moment :))) :)))))))))))))
Big thank you Israel! Remember Rosental scored. Could not believe the 2-3 in result the morning after we destroyed Austria 4-1 and thought there was not a chance for qualifying.
Letschkov spielte seinerzeit beim HSV.
I hope my boyfriend doesn't know that or does never see it (he's French and I'm half-Bulgarian :S ). But I like it that Bulgaria defeated all the big teams in the 90's: France, Germany, Argentina ... wish they would be like that today. Sadly, they're not :(
This is the best thing that could happen to french football. These players were self-satisfied superstars (Cantona, Ginola, Papin). After that, the new coach (Aimé jacquet) had to rebuild the team, with new players (Zidane for example), who would win the world cup 4 years later...
You are welcome. It was about time after decades of underachievement and bottle jobs by the French national team. You had never won a World Cup in your entire history.
Hey Mary ! Good news for you ! Bulgaria seems to be building a very perspective team of young players and have big chances to qualify for the next big tournement in Brasil in 2014 , the coach that is leading them is the nephew of Dimiter Penev (the one that leaded the team in USA in 94). They are nothing special for now but I see a big motivation and I believe this whole change in the national team will give its fruits sooner or later. Greetings :)
Yep, great game, great goals. First, the French got punished for booing our national athem. and second, if that will make you (the french) feel better, the outcome of this game led to that remarkable summer in '94. The brazilians won the final, the italians lost it - but the bulgarian national team stole the whole show.
How to destroy an excellent qualifyers? I THINK THIS STORY IS A BIGGEST DRAMA IN FOOTBALL HISTORY. France was damn unlucky on the last stage of that one. 3 games left to the end they needed 2 points to play in WC. 1) In Stockholm they led till 89 minute1:0 but the Swedish liqualised. So France needs just 1 point in last 2 games at home(no problem probably). 2) Injury time against Israel, result 2:2,suddenly the guests scored the crucial goal. 3)The last game: France v Bulgaria...you have seen
17.11.1993. On the next day a local newspaper came up with the following title "France has qualified for the World cup in 1998" having in mind that they host the Finals in 1998 :))) (But they sure missed the 1994 Finals :))))
That was great game! I was 15 years old and was shouting like mad. BULGARI YUNACI! btw you can see that the french tv first displayed the wrong result: France 2 Bulgaria 1 :)
@Canadetca Very good point about the referee in the Italy v Bulgaria match being French. He refused to call a penalty on a clear foul committed by Costacurta on Iordan Letchkov in the last minute of the match. There was no way he could have called it. FIFA wanted to see a Brazil and Italy final. Had the French referee called the penalty and if Italy had lost, he would have been severely criticized by FIFA, in private.
hi sorry the referee didnot help italy if BULGARIA had scored a second goal ; i AM SURE ITALY would have been overmotivated to score a third goal sorry but your analysis is Outdated
@@FOUDEFOOT85that's absurd. With your logic it does not matter who refs favor although there are tons of examples where refs decided a match outcome. I am sure bulgaria would have been equally motivated. Nothing outdated about showing that bulgaria was cheated out of a goal and potentially the win. Quite clearly ref helped italy weasel through
I wouldn't want to deny Bulgaria their place and performances at USA 94, but it is a shame that I never got to see some of the greatest of this era of French players at a world cup. Papin, Cantona, Ginola.
It would have been a shame not to see letchkov, Stoichkov and balakov at the World Cup. Bulgaria had the second-most players in the All Tournament first team, after only Brazil.
Be proud of your homeland! Don't be ashamed of your origin, because it's a great nation. And by the way I bet your boyfriend knows these moments of the 93s. Every french person does. :)
This was the greatest disaster of the entire history of french football. congratulations to bulgaria, cos from that time, we knew that "it's not finish yet". a lesson we have never forgotten!!
it's not exagerration, i don't know why you Romanian dislike Bulgaria, well we won't eat you bread and we won't drink your water, they were good and it's prooved. just say it,they were very good, that's why we Bulgarians are proud with these guys.
I was like 5-6 i didn't know much about soccer back then but i remember my mom and dad screaming their lungs out xD and yeap we pretty much owned the frenchies :D , too bad we don't have a strong team like that any more T_T
I heard that Gerrard Houllier blamed David Ginola for the defeat, is that because Ginola sent in a poor and unnecessary cross with 1 minute to go, which led to Bulgaria's winner?
Good comment! Ginola is not to blame! It's so silly to put everything wrong from this game on his account. I read a recent interview with him, and there he said that he still felt the pressure about this. But... don't you think that scoring like this in the last second of the game (exactly!!!) means more than just a single player's mistake or "a poor collective display"?! And France was excellently rewarded four years later :) Greetings from Bulgaria!
