Any guidance on how far does the shoulder and elbow comes forward before the forearm comes down? Some of my 7-8 year olds have a good break and arm circle, but their hand gets in front of their elbow before it moves past their ear and they end up with a quasi-push that results in a rainbow throw. Then they overcompensate and pound it into the ground.

Thank you for the video! Quick question, is it tougher to get a pitcher with a large arm circle to throw like an infielder than infielder to pitch? What I mean by that is my son is a pitcher with large arm circle. He at times is asked to play an infield position and his arm action in the infield honestly looks like a his pitching windup. When playing 3rd he looks like he throws a pitch across the diamond...even with a front leg block...motion stops and doesn't follow throw. He is an effective pitcher... but that motion is too slow in the infield...the other problem with that is he is a extremely over the top thrower. In your opinion, how much effort should.be spent working to get him to throw more like an infielder...will it effect his timing/sequence on the mound? Thank you.

good long toss, push ups, pullups, some weights if you have access. start super easy with long toss and start throwing harder as you get out past 90'. go out as far as you want, staying nice and loose. then come in still throwing hard. youll be amazed.

you’re arm acts based on set up. when you’re throwing it’s physically impossible to think ab what you’re arm should be doing mid throw. instead you think ab the pre throw mechanics that will allow for your arm to do what it has to

Mate do you play baseball ? Of course he throws it like a four seam fast ball , every fielder throws like this .the idea is to get it to your target as fast as possible

I find it interesting how different a throwing motion is compared to a pitcher vs other position players. A pitcher seperates his body from the ball down and up and they end up in a powerful throwing motion as with a in fielder they seperate the ball from the body. As a pitcher you want to get the ball wet and get a good stride and ball comes up and bam, you have a good arm path and can generate arm speed. I primarily work with my son on his throwing motion. I was a pitcher, and don't throw to much at him at once and know how he learns.

It seems like basic fundamentals are a lost art in coaching, especially the younger kids just delveloping. I see kids with hitting/throwing coaches outside of "travel ball" coaches at 10u that either aren't being taught properly or just don't work at getting better. It's seems like the coaches are afraid to try and change the way a kid throws, even if it means giving them good habits to break the bad habits learned. We as kids were always taught "thumbs down" when hands break at the chest. I try to work with my son's teammates when i can but it seems like the coaches are trying to teach PAST the fundamentals. These kids, especially when learning to pitch, won't be as successfulI with improper mechanics. I pitched as well and started getting my son to understand basic throwing mechanics at age 4-5 when he showed an interest in playing. He really took to catching and developed a strong mid to short arm throw. Working with him now on getting a longer arm slot because he's starting to pitch and really likes it. Keep working at it and the coaches will hopefully come around.

@@Boltsfan22 I understand where you’re coming from. But in my experience, the issue goes beyond just the coaches. Most parents are the first ones to introduce their kids to the game, and hence are their first coaches. Unfortunately, some of those parents are not aware they’re either not teaching proper techniques, or are teaching them just plain wrong techniques. For example, we had a kid from a previous season whose dad claims does really good at first. So the coaches tried him out there. The kid is right handed, so we teach them that, when you are fielding a ball at first, put your right foot on the edge/corner of the bag. He uses his left, when the coaches told him to use his other foot, he says his dad taught him to step with his left foot. Needless to say, at some point in the season, the dad wanted to pick a fight with one of the coaches for correcting his child’s technique, despite the fact that it’s not the proper technique.

Hey Coach Matt! I have a question regarding the footwork. It looks on this play it was more of a step behind rather than a step through. Is it more of preference for the individual? Any advantages using a step behind rather than a step through? I’ve been teaching my son to do the step behind while playing outfield and a right left to target step through while in the infield. Hopefully I’m explaining that right and thanks for the great videos

Usually you see step behind in outfield and either shuffle or step in front and then shuffle for the infield. Hope this helps and good luck!!

Hi I practise a lot for throwing it’s one of my weaknesses all of my throws are in line but a lot of my throws aren’t at chest level it usually goes down into the dirt I know it’s hard without seeing me throw but do you have any ideas on the causation if you could help it would be very appreciated

If you know that your ball is gonna drop instead of aiming for his chest area aim for a little bit above that area so that the ball drops right where you want it also make sure to throw with your whole body not just arm as in stepping forward and pushing off of the ground with your back foot to get more power

When you switched from SS to 2nd, was it much of a transition for you? Was for me. Playing SS and 3rd in HS, the new throwing angle from 2nd was a mental block for me for a bit. Interestingly enough, Chuck Knoblauch started his shanks not long after my college days came to an end. At least I could put a name on my issue later in life. The Knoblauchs. LOL. wasnt funny at time though. Nothing funny about throwing a ball at my head coach in first base dug out twice in an inning after routine grounders. Especially being a walk on and not getting many ops to begin with

This video was amazing for my son, he is 7 but very athletic and I’ve been frustrated on him not throwing the ball with some pace. This little change in keeping thumbs down and imagining you are in water and not getting the ball wet. He went from 40 mph to 47-49 . One more thing he is on a 9u team and is mainly in the outfield should we apply the same idea but with a bigger circle? Thank you again

7 guys were selected before Lindor. Think about that. Gerrit Cole, Danny Hultzen, Trevor Bauer (now an Indian), Dylan Bundy lol, Bubba Starling, Anthony Rendon, Archie Bradley. I’d take Lindor over more than half of these guys.

5 minutes of saying the same thing then he gets to the complicated part and says ‘from here it’s just throw’. Of course the argument to this would be ‘the complicated part is the setup’, well I don’t agree with that.
