Heard Corelli at the Met. He was the most EXCITING tenor I ever heard. When the lights went down and the performance was about to start you could almost FEEL the audience inching forward in their seats in anticipation. The only other singer I associate this with is Birgit Nilson
He has the gift of “overtone”singing. Breathing he opens his mouth and it streams. He has it very pronounced, rather rare. He sings without any effort.
Inarrivabile Corelli!!!
This is absolutely fantastic singing. By far the best Corelli has ever sang in my personal experience, both in terms of flowing cantilena, & musicality. The phrasing is very very familiar to me, - Franco has obviously spent much time listening to Caruso's version, the only one superior in voice & phrasing to this. Marvelous. I never thought I'd live to hear another tenor come so close to the great Enrico in this aria. If it had been bigger voiced, it could almost have been him.
To conclude with dignity, this is the most beautiful live video recording of Corelli. Very interesting for those who are interested in perfect vocal technique. God made human being knowing that some of them would never be able to understand truth and beauty. It is a pity
¡¡¡QUE GRANDE, Y SIN EXAGERAR, EL MAS GRANDE DE TODOS!!! ESTILO UNI- CO, PERSONALIDAD INDISCUTIBLE. REALMENTE UN GRANDE CON MAYUS- CULAS. ¡¡¡HAY FRANCO QUE GRANDE Y MARAVILLOSO QUE ERES!!!
+James Morse The quality that defines & unites all the truly great singing voices, - is that while they are singing any aria in their vocal prime, they can make you forget all other tenors versions in that moment. I can appreciate all the greatest voices in all fachs, & admire the unique tonal beauty & vocal characteristics of each, - without ever feeling the need to decide for myself or others, let alone declare publically, that any one of them is the greatest of all. When tenor John McCormack saw Caruso in the lobby of the hotel they were both staying in one morning, McCormack said, - 'Good morning Enrico! - & how is the world's greatest tenor this morning?' - Without missing a beat, Caruso replied, - 'And since WHEN, John, did you become a baritone?' People of truly prodigious talent who are secure enough in their own gifts, have not the slightest difficulty in acknowledging, admiring & applauding that of others. Caruso loved the sweetness of McCormack's lyric tenor. Bjorling tried to imitate Caruso, until someone warned he would lose his own voice. Tagliavini emulated Gigli's timbre. Pavarotti wished he had more of the bright silver timber of Bjorling. & Domingo & Pavarotti simply shook their heads in amazed disbelief at what Caruso could do. Richard Tauber envied Wagnerian tenor Kurt Taucher. The great thing, though, for the rest of us, is that we can appreciate them all without having to rank them.
James Morse Caruso, Lanza and Corelli, these tree great tenors are standards by which greatness is measured. I was age 19 or 20 when Lanza was launched into greatness, but I was in my early 30s when Franco the Magnificent drove Met fans into frenzy: Corelli’s voice is magic, magnificent, beyond being encapsulated by mere words!!!
Thanks for posting this. It's very educational to view these singers from the golden era. Corelli is singing with no tension. Something so rarely seen today in opera due to the way in which singers are taught. Yet it is important to note that this was early on in his career. At any rate, what a wonderful thing to behold. Much can be learned both artistically and vocally.
All there is to say is... "all bow to the king". Never in the history of operarecordings has there been a tenorvoice to match the voice of Franco Corelli.
Brividi. Grazie Verdi e grazie Corelli. ❤❤
You explain his amazing singing much better than I could. This audience's reaction is a complete surprise to me, I saw him many times (in the USA), and the audiences adored him.

There is a recording on here of him sing Ah si ben mio at the met, he was booed. He then followed with Di quella pira, Noone booed then. Opera crowds are a funny bunch!
I first heard this magnificent voice and saw this gorgeous man in 1963. HE IS THE MOST UNDERRATED TENOR OF OUR TIME. Never a scandal, Loretta was always there for him. He was so humble with the great gift God gave him. Primo, Primo Tenore.
The definitive live version. Unmached. And people, please, stop comparing the new tenors with Corelli and MDM. It´s just not the same subject. A simple phrase that resumes this kind of discussion; "The worst of Corelli and MDM is better than the best of the new tenors." And that´s it.
Such a shame that we so so many of Corelli's later recording on RU-vid and so few of the early ones. In his recordings from the 70's he is amazing in the late 50's early 60's he was a class above even that!
having been the victim of these claques in Spoleto many years ago, I can tell you they are not fun. However, I believe what I hear someone shouting from the audience is "un fenomeno" (a phenomenon). No matter, this is pure Corelli, the best in my opinion.
