He is 50 years old here and is so magnificent and handsome as well. What a gift to this world. Even Pavarotti paid tribute to him stating he had " vocal chords of steel" Thank you for posting my favorite tenor, Peter Gibbons, greatly appreciated.
Maybe he is for the italians, who for many is the way to sing for a tenor. As for correct vocal-line and the bel canto way of signing, he don't come near the greatest SINGER, BJÖRLING. Corelli had power over björling nothing else!
@@Kjuken69 Please, Björling the best? People should stop comparing one with the others. They all had their strengths and weaknesses. It is always in the ears of a listener and their preferences..... given the high number of Italian tenors with different voices and style it is not smart to assign Corelli to the "Italian way" of singing. What can be said is that voices like his could typically blossom in Italy.
This remastering is excellent! The whole concert is as new! Wonderful to actually discern Corelli’s facial expressions including smiles! With gratitude from Sweden
@@kneeman66 I wish! Pavarotti had the media on side. Even now I’ve never heard a Corelli on the radio in England. ( of course, this doesn’t mean he has never been played) . Perhaps, a musical-history student, in the future, will see this video, and get curious, and produce a biography...
@@maggiedeveney actually I had thought about producing one comparing Corelli and Del Monaco to try to give it some interest. If you actually look at Corelli's life it was pretty dull from what I have read aside from his performances of course which isn't all that bad but doesn't make for an interesting documentary
@@kneeman66 think about his life before opera and then the transition from naval engineer to singing with Callas. That’s interesting! The nerves? His wife. The tensions there. The affairs. Lots there for a great movie. His last few months were tragic, like any opera he sang. I gleaned all this from Rene Seghers book, and three others. I thought there was lots there for a movie...
My IT fellow went over the entire concert and brightened up the picture and the sound all remaining faithful to the original performance. I hope you enjoy it
The most accomplished, magical, talented tenor of all time. Beautiful, effortless, perfect with wonderful volume and colour to his voice and always inspired interpretation. Thank you Franco! But where is Andrea Chenier???????????????
we would not have this magnificent voice to enjoy if dear Franco had stayed with the damned academic voice teachers whose aim it was (and is) to ruin great voices like this - thank you Franco for finding your own way - thank you for fighting for the clear booming expressive chest voice that opera was all about - modern singers give us no magic, no power -- it's depressing to listen to our modern 'great' singers who do not know how to sing
I heard Franco Corelli and Lisa Albanese in concert with the NY Philharmonic at Lincoln Center in April, 1966. on my first date with the woman I would marry. The Rock Hudson of Opera, I couldn't take my eyes off him - we were in the 8th row center! I think he is the best of the historical 20th C. tenors, even compared to Caruso and Pavarotti - there's a lyrical delicacy to his power and his beautiful voice!
@@djbiviano I reread what you wrote: You were in the 8th row centre!!!! You got to heaven before time! What a prize memory! I hadn’t heard of him two years ago, and now everyone else sounds lacking. I wish there was a recording of the concert you attended. Corelli is a singular artist. Thanks for your comments.
@@maggiedeveney Yes, indeed, I had died and gone to heaven! The concert was a 50th Anniversary Gala for the Ladies Garments Workers Union, a powerful political lobby. NYC Youth Commissioner, a friend of mine, could not attend, and gave me his golden tickets and ordered me to take her on a date! Here we were, unknowns sitting among the pols! :)
Thank you very much for remastering and uploading this wonderful concert. I had the good fortune to see him live as Manrico at Salzburg Festival 1962 (Trovatore).
Thank you so much for this remastered video of the great Corelli!. I was fortunate enough to hear him several times at the Metropolitan Opera in the 1960’s and hearing him now in your video, I am reminded that he was indeed incredible.!!
Fifty years later, Franco Corelli is still the greatest tenor, Franco Corelli (tenor) Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra Alberto Ventura ---------- Verdi: Questa o quella (from Rigoletto) Giordano, U: Un dì, all' azzurro spazio (from Andrea Chénier) Meyerbeer: Mi batte il cor … O paradiso (from L'Africana) Puccini: Che gelida manina (from La Bohème) Puccini: Ch'ella mi creda libero e lontano (from La Fanciulla del West) Massenet: Ah! @@kneeman66 That is funny. One of the best reactions I have seen from the Japanese audience, is for, Love Of My Life - Queen in Tokyo Japan 1985. Even if you don't like contemporary music it is worth watching just for the audience. The Japanese generally seem to have very good taste in music.
... says Zelmira who is, no doubt, an expert with a public reputation and knows all that there is to know about singing. Zelmira, what was you real name again?
I am hard put to choose between him and Del Monaco, but I slightly prefer Del Monaco simply because of his ability to go from oh so very soft and gentle to full force and back again in a moment. Apart from him I have only heard that in old 78 recordings of Gigli. I am hesitant to name any as absolutely unmatchable, because there are such wonderful voices from the earliest recordings from prior to records, and some them were clearly as great in their time if only the technology had allowed for it to truly come across. Also remember it is the entertainment business. There will have been those whose 'faces did not fit', who didn't have the right contacts. It was a very difficult business to break in to. Zanatello was stronger than Caruso and outsung him on stage in NY. The latter reputedly had mafia backing and it was ensured Zanatello wouldn't sing in NY again. He returned Italy and built an open air opera house with no microphones allowed, and stated "Only REAL singers will sing here". Caruso never did. He was good but not the best. He couldn't have made himself heard well enough at back of Zanatello's open air opera house. Zanatello went on to obtain moderate success but not that which he well deserved, because of not being able to work in NY. Del Monaco also used recordings of Zanatello to help train his own voice. Not a lot of people know that. Corelli was among the most magnificent though. I wish I could have afforded to travel and hear he and his peers live. In my now twilight years such memories would be wonderful to lose myself in whilst listening to their tremendous voices.
Another this concert at youtube, maybe dvd version it's not fit lyp and sound perfectly. Belcanto society vhs is only fit lyp and sound. This video fit with lyp and sound perfectly. Thank you
@@JohnDavidDunlap Yours is a very blanket statement. Let's be more specific. Even tenors 10 years older than he is here wouldn't sing the Rigoletto arias as badly as he, and the rest is an exercise in "let's see how loud I can be" and not much else beside
I posted another clip of this entire concert without the Applause or walking so you can watch it in about 30 minutes ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZWmhGf4UDJw.html
I took one lesson with Corelli in NYC. Not a word of English and a complete waste of tuition. Nice to meet him, but nothing was taught. Apparently he didn't harbor Lauri Volpi's sense of collaboration he so admired.
I studied with corelli a few times in n.y.c He spoke Italian and english learnt a lot, a great time in my life meeting and studying with this great.man. A very congenial and modest man, with an unbelievable voice. Was suppoosed to follow up with him in Italy unfortunately he became ill. Never got to see him again.
