Cevert`s passing is so incredibly sad. It is also sad that those incredible days of F1 will never be repeated. Perhaps that it is a good thing given how dangerous the sport was then, but I dont think any other era can touch the mix of rawness and beauty of the early to mid 70`s cars or the bravery and character of the drivers.

Well said. Cevert had it all in abundance....movie star looks, charisma and talent. F1 back then was glamorous, sexy and extremely dangerous...an intoxicating mix for both driver and spectator alike.

I remember that sad day as if it were yesterday. All Tyrrell fans were looking forward to a bright future for the team. Francois was such a remarkable talent and an incredibly beautiful person. Out of respect for his elder teammate, he dutifully followed Jackie around that year and could have won a number of races. Amazing humility ... it is impossible to imagine this happening these days with the spoilt brats who now race, and oversee, F1.

What a beautiful tribute to an amazing man and driver! I watched the Flying Scot documentary and was touched at how Jackie’s wife still wasn’t over the loss of such a dear friend and how in their garden is a bench in remembrance of Cevert. Thank you for this beautiful tribute!

I was at Watkin's Glen the weekend Cevert was killed but arrived from Ontario Canada on the Saturday afternoon. There was definitely a dark cloud hanging over the event when we arrived. Tyrrell had pulled out of the race by this time. Such a shame. He is not forgotten by me and others of my generation. There was such a different atmosphere at the US Grand Prix compared to the Canadian Grand Prix at Mosport two weeks earlier. Nothing to do with Cevert's death, but it was much more of a circus. A school bus was lit on fire, if I remember correctly. it was like a big party and piss up. I remember Chris Economaki of ABC Sports cut me off downtown (my little claim to fame, 15 seconds, not 15 minutes). The Cdn. GP crowd was much more laid back, and people were there primarily to watch the race, not to say there wasn't a fair amount of drinking going on at Mosport too. The Cdn GP and CanAm races used to get crowds of 100,000 people. Unreal. You should have seen the traffic jams trying to get out of the place going west back to Toronto. I remember so many great drivers we lost. Peter Revson, Mark Donahue, Ronnie Peterson and sadly so many more. I bought a book at the race titled "Grand Prix 73" (which i still have) and so many of the drivers listed in that book were later killed. Such an unforgiving sport.

Yes, he was a superstar in France. He was regularly on the front page of magazines. He made me love Formula 1 and cars more generally. I still watch F1 sometimes. He was my idol and a kind of role model when I was 9, 10. I had pictures of him on every wall in my bedroom. :-) I was 11 when he died. It was a sad day and I still remember my... my distress. Lesson leant: never again have I become so intimately attached to a public figure.

No soy supersticioso.

I was at the Glen that day, and I remember that the cars had stopped coming round. Wondering what happened, we finally heard the loudspeakers declare, "Cervert et mort. Cert et mort." Later that day, my wife and I wandered over to the crash site, not far from where we were camped in the infield, and we saw bunches of spectators picking up tiny pieces of blue fiberglass, I suppose for souvenirs, that were still scattered at trackside.

The mid to late 1970's were supposed to belong to four very talented drivers; Ronnie Peterson, François Cévert, Emerson Fittipaldi, and Niki Lauda. Any of them, given a proper car, could win championships, but only Lauda succeeded. The first two died tragically, and Fittipaldi made a terrible decision to race for a mid field team belonging to his brother. Back in the 70's nothing could be taken for granted.

The Watkins Glen guard rails have Always been the worst constructed GR's in the world. When a car side swipes them, the bolts break and the GR's fall on the ground exposing the car posts to the posts. They end up being a chain saw. I have seen a Corvette sid3eswip the rails at the top of the Esses and lay 100 feet of rail on the ground. If they are hit at a steep angle like in the Cevert crash and the NASCAR crash where the Boot re-enters the originals course, they not only fall on the ground but tare apart leaving blunt ends to tare the car and driver to pieces. They are laid out to bounce the cars from side to side like a pin ball. i.e. the NASCAR crash at turn two. In the decades I went to the Glen starting in the late 60's, nobody at that track has given any thought to driver safety. They think installing rails is all they have to do whether they work or not. At the end of the straight where the chicane is now, they should have had multiple strings of tires that would decelerate a car which would have saved McDuffie's life and Kendall's legs. And then there is Helmut Koning's head to consider. "Two Dimensional Reactors" instead of "Three Dimensional Thinkers."

ysgol3 .... Emerson was lucky to get a hot drink. Sadly Colin Chapman was a tight ass. I remember seeing on tv Chapman looking shocked and like he was crying on the pit wall. It was clear it was all for the cameras on him when his former mechanic now working with BRM told him Cevert had his accident watch the video he tenses up wanders around looking lost but he looked to me like he didn’t give shit one it wasn’t his driver. I still like Emerson he was always so nice and Jackie too.
@ysgol3
@ysgol3 5 лет назад
@@abcallinan Very interesting - I somehow get the impression that he was immediately calculating that Cevert's death meant Lotus would become favourites to win the Constructors' championship - which they did because Jackie pulled out of the race and Ronnie won for Lotus the following day. The clip of Chapman crying on the pit wall - I think perhaps you're referring to the one on the film about Lotus in 1973 - 'If you're not winning you're not trying hard enough'. In that film it shows that Emerson had a bad accident in practice in Holland - to be fair Chapman's shocked reaction looks genuine - and it's THEN, in Holland, that he sits on the wall with his head in his hands - before finding out that, although Emmo had bad foot injuries, his life wasn't in danger. The 'crying' clip HAS been used misleadingly to suggest it's in the Glen - it wasn't.

I agree with "icons" or "celebrities" but "heroes"? why? formula one is an exclusive club for rich people driving fast cars and living a high life, yes, it's a very dangerous occupation, and the risks are enormous, but heroes? that's a stretch. Being pretty and dying horribly, in a situation that you chose to be in the first place doesn't make you a hero. When working in an environment with high powered heavy machines, accidents will have a high percentage of fatalities for humans involved, that's how a supervisor explained to us in a job I was years ago, working with construction and cargo handling machines, there are no "clean cuts" because of the weight and size, that means, for example, if your hand is involved, you will probably lose it, or it will be rendered useless, so first thing, minimize the risks. Well, I guess that does not apply for formula one, but still, it's the "hero" status that I don't agree with, maybe daredevil, or just dumb, would be more accurate
