Please consider improving your microphone and/or sound recording setup. I know from many others including podcast veterans that superior vocal clarity is possible. Your content and subjects are great.

The pit board did NOT say "hold position" it said "Slow". Gilles took it to mean "hold position", Pironi took it to mean, "Don't do anything stupid".

Actually, he wasn't a nazi. He was only member of the party because it was required to continue racing in/for Germany. He was never interested in politics and probably didn't even know what the NSDAP did.

The drivers had to put up with Nazi parading of motorsport, no choice, conditions at the time were not ideal, trying to please the Officials should have taken second place to safety and timing of events. I have just read Rudolfs book and he spoke of this event and not ideal conditions.

May I recommend Faster by Neal Bascomb. The whole Nazi/Mercedes/AutoUnion story is told in relation to the main part of the book, the great upset victory of the Delahaye 145 against Rudy C. and the Mercedes W154 at Pau in 1938. I'm sure Rudy mentioned that one in his book. 😂

It should not be forgotten that ( other than the appalling start ) a large part of blame for the accident centred on James Hunt who ever after blamed Patrese. I believe that Italian cameras at the time showed Hunt blocking/avoiding Patrese prior to Hunt’s impact with Peterson. Maybe it was like a road car incident where one driver takes the view “ you’re not getting past”. Sadly nothing can bring him back, since when we have been robbed of witnessing truly fantastic car heroics. One moment I still remember - Race of Champions at Brands where Ronnie went past Beltoise at Clearways ( 60 mph corner ) as if Beltoise were standing still. Great video!😁

I remember him at Mallory Park when I was marshalling myself in the early seventies. In 1982 I was racing regularly at Kyalami in Formula Fords. That part of the straight was near the start grid and uphill flat out. The cars crested the rise at the point of the accident so neither Marshal would have seen Price and he wouldn't have seen them either till too late.

Thankyou Formula Phil ...I knew about the history of the 1958 Argentine Grand Prix. I didn't know ...the wonderful art of deception. ...to bluff 2nd 3rd into holding back to save themselves ...not to mention broken clutch / crash gearbox ...the forced no tyre stop due to time consuming wheel studs ...Moss losing his Vanwall car and only left with the Cooper to drive ...Moss and Cooper had fate and their consumate skills to bring about this wonderful success. ...Thanks to privateer Rob Walker ...The world and motor racing are better for this combination of skill and fate. ...Did Enzo Ferrari say there was no future for rear engined race cars? ...Such wonder is needed in science and engineering to help us overcome our energy, pollution and weather problems ...something I'm working on ...a source of inspiration for me.

As a English immigrant to Canada i watched Gilles in Formula Atlantic and trust me,that was was some kind of series back then, with competitors such as Keke Rosberg, Bobby Rahal, Price Cobb, Tom Gloy...track limits were taken as "just suggestions" as the overtaking happened everywhere on tracks that would be outlawed today, and Gilles was the craziest of the bunch.I followed him in his F1 career attending the Canadian GP yearly, Racing was different then, drivers were approachable, i have photos of Mario Andretti standing in the rain,on the track wall at Ile Notre Dame circuit, (now named the circuit Gilles Villeneuve) chatting with fans after his Alfa Romeo F1 car was out. Gilles was my Hero and a little bit of me died when he lost his life...F1 was never quite the same when he was lost to us and i literally cried buckets when his son Jaques fufilled his fathers legacy in the Williams.
