This is the first time I have ever seen this. I give Bugner credit for being classy in defeat and not making any excuses, because he could have. He was staggered and then Bruno hits him behind the head and pushes him down. The referee somehow counts as a knockdown even though he was pushed, and then Bruno continued to hit him after the bell rang. Bruno was way ahead and would ha e won, but wow. I hate seeing a fight end like this.
I’ll always remember Terry Marsh’s prediction for this one. ‘ I think Bugner will win but his chances of beating Tyson is approx zero which is fractionally more than Bruno’s chances.’
You cannot help but love Joe in retrospect. You have to admire big Frank as he was a great fighter minus good coaching , as his chin was ok, but his ability to survive when phased was due to poor sparring and average coaching.
Bruno cheated and due to public hostility towards Bugner the referee allowed his punching of joe on back of his neck to go unpenalised. Also note the way Bruno was able to rush in and start punching Bugner at the end of the count BEFORE the referee waved Bruno on?!! Bruno was supposed to be at other end of the ring
Joe Bugner was never forgiven for 'beating' Henry Cooper in his final fight. Personally, I think Henry won that fight, but the decision went to Joe. He wasn't culpable for that, but the media gave him a hard time consistently as a result. I don't think he ever received the recognition he deserved. He gave Ali a really good go, and the same with Frazier- that alone deserves considerable respect. He seems to have been overlooked for years, but there's no doubting he was a highly capable boxer and athlete.
Bruno fought mike Tyson in his prime he fought lennox Lewis in his prime and was no pushover in today’s present heavyweight division he would be a great
