As a rock guitarist for more than 45 years I can honestly say that other than Gary Moore and Jeff Healy, I've never heard such godlike mastery of voice and instrument as Frank! An absolute giant of a player and a really nice guy to boot.
You never see Marino on the "Greatest Guitarist" lists, but he should be there. His tone is great, his control at high speed is scary. His phrasings are just beautiful, no matter what he's playing.
Not only is the guitar spot on he is singing all the parts well on top of it all. Robin Trower couldnt do that! lol Randy Hanson can though. Best Jimi-channeler
@@leechild4655 The Jimi channel is real. It's not Jimi though it's the spirit you channel everyone has access. I can channel the same vibe after playing for 40 years. It's the blues at its core. It comes from growing up listening to music created by people channeling this spirit. It's feeling more than anything else. You get so into it you become the spirit and you can play what you hear in your head. I can play Jimi note for note or I can play "like" Jimi it becomes the same thing. I'm not claiming to be Jimi but I do know I can sound a lot like him and it's not technical it's a feeling. Sounding like him is more rewarding than trying too hard to sound exactly like him. Eric Johnson is the master or masters when it comes to Jimi channel.
Besides being one of the most underrated guitarists in our time, he also is one of my favourite interpreters of Hendrix. He kinda does his own thing, yet still faithful to the original. I think Jimi would have smiled, I certainly do.
I remember when the Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush Live album came out. Jaw dropping…one of the best guitarists ever. Sadly underrated and under appreciated…🤘
Wow, never knew about Frank Marino until now. Heard Zack Wylde mention him as one of his inspirations in a video and decided to check him out. Can't believe I never knew about such a great player from the 70's.
Frank technical ability is second to no one! The covers he plays are better than the originals, and his own songs showcase his mastery of the guitar.Complex chords and runs are awesome, and to sing like he does while playing is another overlooked talent.Jimi opened the door to what was possible with an electric guitar, and Frank kicked that door down and showed even more what could be done with one! He is a technical genious, his SG is like no other,it's so heavily modded and uses Fender single coil style pick ups instead of the Gibson style, that's part of where his awesome tone comes from, but he also makes his own pedals and amps! Check out his live interviews, especially one from everyoneLovesGuitar,it's over two hours long, but you'll see just how cool and smart he is,as well as being one of the nicest guys you'll ever listen to.Wings of Pegasus has a live interview with him,and again you'll see what a smart and cool man he is!
@@jettechdonatkins Good stuff Jet. One day my bro asked me if I wanted to a Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush concert. "Who the F is he?". Glad I went! Was the World Anthem tour. I was hooked. That was a lonnnng time ago. And here I am. 😀
@@icomenotinpeacebutwithaswo7193 same here, back in the late 70's a friend of mine told Me that He just got back from a mahogany rush show (we were in so, Cal.) and He was completely blown away. I replied......Mahogany Who? Shortly thereafter I became a Fan. Frank kicked butt at the Not so long ago, Agora Theater performance, showing the Fans that He can still Shreddd. It's sad that He had to retire.
@@fernandomartinez5812 SRV copied Hendrix's licks when he played his songs. He even admitted that he wanted to sound as close to Hendrix as possible. Listen to more live Jimi stuff bro. SRV would laugh in your face if you told him he was the better guitar player
Thanks Frank, for contributing to my misspent youth of the 70’s! Not a single regret, watching guys like this, Beck, Trower, Hendrix, Page. I could do this all day! I so miss the days when music had a completely different purpose, and a soul to pour it out of. Thanks for the upload.
@@johnlany3940 I know John. I was fortunate to catch him the night they were recording songs for the “Live” album. 1978 The Wharehouse, New Orleans. Glad we both got to see him. I’ll be a fan till I’m six ft under. Regards
Frank Marino is right up there in the pantheon of electric blues players: Hendrix, SRV, Johnny Winter, Jimmy Page....and what I really love about FM is how much he means it. He's not putting anything on. It's a direct pipeline from his heart and soul.....can't say that about a lot of players.
It's a real shame that Frank Marino and Gary Moore have always been underrated these guys are guitar heroes and they've inspired millions .You can hear the passion and feel in Frank's playing a real musician simply AMAZING.
Samuel, I love his art but I can understand the other which don't like so music climate or haven't grew up to blues ... The question of underestimation an artist or larger group of them depends on RTV music makers and us. You have right Frank and Gary have underrated but you, me and many os blues fans do a lot to change the situation! Regards bro!
the Bigger shame is he Just Announced due to an Unfortunate Affliction, he will No Longer be Touring... no other Info has been released, just that He may Never play again...
I got to see him Live in Boise Idaho, at the Western Idaho Fairgrounds in 1981 with humble pie, Rory Gallagher, Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush and Blue Oyster Cult headlined, Frank blew me the Muck away!!!!!Flawless!!!!
What gets me about this performance is what a perfect homage it is to the original from Electric Ladyland: FM hits all of the best Hendrix riffs right on, and then does whatever he wants with it besides. This is the work of a master cover artist, with a deep love for the inspiration, and then an extraordinary ability to take it somewhere else WONDERFUL...
I've seen Hendrix, Page, Trower, Alvin Lee, Beck, Eddie VH, dozens of others and Frank was right up there in the upper stratosphere of it doesn't get any better than this. So sorry to hear he isn't going to be touring any more.
@@daveznothereman7064 It seems Frank had to redo a Concert from Ohio, Agora theater, I believe 2010. The drumming was out of wak. Frank spent upwards of 5 years getting every drum strike to perfection and after all is said and done, Frank's shoulder FROZE and forced his retirement. Criminal man, absolutely criminal. The Kanadian Hendrix on the shelf...
Far and away the absolute best version of this Hendrix masterpiece I've heard!! Frank makes it smoke without ever once losing the original feel! Simply mindblowing!!!
❤ Absolutely brilliant. What a truly outstanding player and singer. This gives me a massive high just listening to it.. so much energy and excitement in his playing.. it’s alive and no mistake 😊
And all that sound out of an SG, and more importantly all that soul out of Frank. A true rock/blues axe god, totally authentic and into what he is doing and saying. A musical maestro of the highest possible calibre. I hope kids aspiring to pick up an axe get a pile of his CD's for Christmas.
I seen him every year since the 70's, never get tired of him. I was from pittsburgh, and i would travel all over to just see him.can't wait for him to get well and get back on the road.
When his live album was recorded, I was in the audience.... it was the best pure guitar concert I’ve ever seen....period ! I can’t think of any guitarist who would want to get up for “his turn” after Frank!... Even now ! Geez💥👏🏻👍🏻
Ah Frank Marino....you rocked us in Canada man...truly one of the greatest guitar players folks from south of our border has never heard of! Thanks man!!
Welcome! Better late than never :) Marino has always been one of my favorites. He's one of those guitarists that never achieved commercial success, but influenced an awful lot of guitarists who came later. Search for both "Frank Marino" and also for "Mahogany Rush". You'll find plenty of stuff on the internet.
Man , what a monster sound !!! And that vibrato ( not the one on his sg ) . And that precision . And that feel . And that .............I could go on and on . There are 2 guitar players that can make me cry out of pure beauty of what and how they play . Frank Marino and Allan Holdsworth .
Marvelous take on this song . I'm impressed. First time I saw him playing it . Haven't seen it done that well in a long time . Simply going for it, dripping passion. There is a man who knows who holds what's in his hands !
Great cover of an intense blues opus. My favorite Frank. Marino, though is the songs he penned himself. Fantastic lyricist as well as an incredible guitar player. Psychedelic Jazz, rock, hard hitting and working the Blues, like another one of his heroes. Johnny Winter. Frank stands alone, in the pantheon of greats.
Robin and Frank got me through some rough times in the mid seventies! Bridge of Sighs has got to be one of the best rock guitar albums, but all of Robin Trower's and Frank's albums are excellent!
Had a '68 SS 396 Camaro in '73,74 nd 75,wore out Bridge of Sighs,For Earth Below,Child of Novelty and Strange Universe 8-track tapes, and probably smoked more than a few joints while doing so! I was always the driver for my buddies, and they always wanted either Frank or Robin cranked up,Oh Yeah!!
Definitely forgot how good Frank was, and is . Its so cool to hear people just learning about another great guitar player, it never gets old when its this good and he has always been so good. Just somehow got sidetracked out of my library? so glad to find again and definitely won't misplace again and definitely will be looking him up. And tuning my ear to all his music again. :-) and search him out to see if he is still with us and playing live still. Rock and Roll doesn't get much better he was and is up there with the best of all players. Damn cool this fell into my hands/ears range. :-)
Saw frank in the seventies when he put world anthem out and heard the show again when live came out following year and still blown away today by the material style and passion of a guitarißt touched by heaven😂
I've been looking at rockers, and Frank crossed my feed. I'd forgotten all about Strange Dreams... oh, my gosh!!!! What a song to forget. I'm embarrassed. Glad he popped up on Facebook.
It's not shredding, he's playing with feel. Guitarists who shred play a thousand notes a second and it sounds like me mechanical. MARINO has soul and other Guitarists with same DNA.. Voila 😎👍
It was through Frank Marino's playing that I discovered other Guitar Greats like Steve Morse, Joe Satriani, Scott Henderson, Greg Howe, George Puleo....I could go on and on...but, Frank was the ORIGINAL!! He will always be one of the greatest guitarists of all times!!!
When I was a teenager, he used to play in school gymnasiums In Ville Lasalle. We wouldn't miss Mahogany Rush. It was a happening for us. Thank's Frank ! Later on, he did the first act before John Mayall, at the Montreal Forum (1972). And of course, we were there, my friends and myself !!!
Blessed to see this man play live and I have seen them all accept for Hendrix no one as the high speed control of this man his tone and phrasings are GOD MODE I Frank can play anything and it is spectacular I wish he was in the Rock All of Fame so people in this century could see this phenom can play just once to a large audience. the shit I would hear when I would tell people he was better than Van Halen or Page or Clapton or Beck or Vai name anyone he was above them all
One of the best ! Got to see him back in 82 with Angel city, Humble pie and Missouri he pretty much blew them off of the stage ! There was some Humble pie fans in front of us and when he came out and did Electric Reflections of War they were standing there with their jaws dropped !
Frank is The Man. He plays each phrase like it's a mystical incantation. The atmosphere is quiet and reverent as a church while the high priest of seventies-era guitar transfixes even those like me just listening to the recording. Having seen him have this effect on audiences in person, time after time starting in 1980, it never fails to wow me.
From the very beginning Frank had the Hendrix-derivative label stapled to his back, and not without fair reason. But anyone who has heard the solo on "He's Calling" knows that there were moments when he carved out his own place in the guitar hero pantheon, and on that song left one of the best electric guitar solos in captivity.
Frank Marino was a great great guitarist and musician. And a great showman . His concerts are memorizing . Frank , Alvin Lee and Rory Gallagher are my favorite guitarist . I’m sure if I had a lesson with them that they could 4 notes into precious metal. In an hour
From 3:30 we hear an incredible guitar solo that goes on for 3 minutes! Frank was sadly overlooked in rock history. Glad he kept playing. Makes me want to pull out my Mahogany Rush album and listen again.....alas, no turntable anymore. lol
Frank Marino is a hell of a guitar player and a super down to earth guy. I was lucky enough to have seen him play in 1973. His first tour away from Montreal and am hoping to see him tour once covid is done :-) Peace
Merci de cette musique si enivrante ... j'ai 40 ans de moins en vous écoutant et vous m'avez donné tout l'énergie nécessaire pour terminer cette journée en beauté.
I remember his Johnny B Goode from the '70s. It made the local FM station in the backwoods of Northern California for a short while. I never forgot the raging guitar solo. I'm so ready for a major comeback.
Frank is a true student and master of the guitar. I'm sure he ripped the roof off that small club venue. Seen him once 30 years ago. Got 5th row in St.Louis for a reschedule show. ( covid-19). Can't wait. Crank up the amp!!!!
Summer '79, Oakland, CA, Day On The Green, Monsters of Rock: Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent. The rain was spotty, off n on, I thought I would be smuthered and crushed as the mob of people rushed to the gate Frank electrified the fans, everyone was feelin' it, when he started jammin' on Hendrix, transporting everyone back ten years to Woodstock!!!! Awesome af days!🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
