We had too many players who play to their max potential/effort in the regular season but don't have an extra step to turn up to for the playoffs. Most players in other markets play below their max potential/effort (unless it's a contract year) but then have an extra gear they turn on when they hit the playoffs. That's why you see these players like goodrow who light up the playoffs but leave something to be desired in the regular season.

I don't buy the analysis on Marner. Over 8 seasons in the playoffs, Marner leads his team in scoring, 2nd in +/-. When the Leafs beat Tampa, he scored 11pts, +9 to lead his team. So that didn't help them win that series? Really? The solution to a team struggling to score in the playoffs is to get rid of their leading playoff scorer? How does that make sense? Sell crazy some place else. The guy they just gave $92 mil only outscored Marner once in 9 playoff series and is blatantly weaker defensively. Why would Berube waste his time having a meeting with Marner if they're dumping him? Marner might want to depart the tax situation but he won't be going because he didn't help them in the playoffs. The Leafs are screwed and Franky is just telling it like it is. The overpayment of their so called stars is the problem that they made for themselves. No movement clause means they are not going to get much for Marner as he would have to approve any move. It won't be nothing but will be underwhelming. At least they will save a ton of cap space in which to bring in the players that will help them.

Marner is a 9.5M regular season player and a 3.5-5M playoff player.

The smartest moves for MLSE will transpire as follows: Have Marner play out his contract and not resign him. Players on their final year of expiring contracts play harder. The fact is, if they knew and have always known that the atlantic division is a complete monster and yet they have always came in with the 2nd best team in the first round series. You need to build a team that counters your known competition. Just watching the Panthers and Oilers in the conference finals, these teams know how to play playoff hockey. I give the Panthers the edge, but if Skinner is solid, then the Oilers definitely have a good chance of their 1st cup since 1990. Of course it would be the Panthers 1st cup. It already is a playoff team. That move will let Detroit or Buffalo get ahead of us in one year. He was our leading scorer 4 times. 50 points in 57 playoff games. No one will offer what he is worth and whatever they get will be gone soon after.

As for the defence core, it's not like management didn't try their best. Schenn could have been the difference maker. He left. That other guy whose name I've forgotten has spent the season recovering from hip surgery. Matt Murray, the same thing. Those were events that could not be anticipated. The cap hit not going up is the kicker that impacted the core four contracts most negatively. Most of Toronto's goals start on Marner's stick not someone else's. The problem lies with his receivers, not him.

People love to talk about how ex-leafs do better on other teams but then fail to mention just how dominate those other teams actually were/are. In all of the cases, they were top-tier teams. This is all fine and good but ultimately the 5 highest paid players on the Leafs all have full no movement clauses. They are not going anywhere unless they allow it.
