Thanks for the great video! Coming from more of a punk rock style this was my first take on real jazz guitar. I'm to perform this song in a family event and this helps me so much. I could pick up the chording quite easily from here too -- mainly i've just used basic open and barre chords like 7's previously. I still haven't grasped the chord patterns, substitutions and progressions completely but I'm sure I will find them useful later in my own compositions as well.

Great analysis and breakdown of this Harry Warren classic. Frank gives straight ahead advice in a transparent cogent style. And he credits the composer for this timeless tune that lies so beautifully under the fingers on the guitar. That is talent and humility in a gifted performer. I'm curious about the guitar. It almost sounds like a nylon string archtop.

Hello, thank you very much for this great tutorial. I like that you aim for the simplest possible harmony at first, it's much easier to get that into the ears at first, and then the richer substitutions sound ... richer, and I'm not locked into what others suggest. Sometimes the substitutions actually obscure the tune, if I don't have the baseline firmly in mind. Another harmonic simplification I'd suggest: the D7 at 4:14 really felt out of place to my ear. I much prefer playing Bb base Ab (full progression EbMaj7, Bb/Ab, Eb/G, C7), which is much more traditional harmony, and the melody fits perfectly on top of it. Some might find it bland, but to me it feels like that's a better harmonic base to work from. Optionally, EbMaj7, AbMaj7, etc is good. My iReal Pro has EbMaj7, Ab7, etc (in which case the D7 played is the tritone sub for Ab7). I know it's all a choice, but I hope that someone else finds this helpful! Thanks again, this is extremely helpful, and the chord solo -- which you make look so easy -- is a fantastic stepping stone! Cheers! jz

@jeffbrown9039
@jeffbrown9039 5 лет назад
Why these guys always want to talk about "teaching" us how to play a tune, instead of just saying "showing" us his ideas on how he plays the tune. Any tune can be Harmonized in any number of ways.....all tasty. Doesn't this guy know this or is he too narrow minded to know?
@guitargod6997
@guitargod6997 5 лет назад
This is supposed to be a "tutorial". Frank does not talk down to people, but he appears to strive for clarity without being tendentious. For those who can already acquit themselves well playing jazz guitar, this comes across as an elegant performance video by a guy with the credentials to deliver the goods. Important to note also the brilliance of Harry Warren the composer who created a classic song that just lies so beautifully under the fingers.
