DVD: smarturl.it/Fra...
Recorded on August 27, 1974 at KCET in Hollywood, A TOKEN OF HIS EXTREME features Frank Zappa with five incredibly talented band members for this extravaganza of live music.
The line-up exists of Frank Zappa-guitar, percussion, vocals; George Duke-keyboards, finger cymbals, tambourine, vocals; Napoleon Murphy Brock-sax, vocals; Ruth Underwood-percussion; Tom Fowler-bass; Chester Thompson-drums.
The Program, as edited and thoroughly tweezed & produced by FZ for Honker Home Video includes these delights: The Dog Breath Variations/ Uncle Meat, Montana, Earl Of Duke (George Duke), Florentine Pogen, Stink-Foot, Pygmy Twylyte, Room Service, Inca Roads, Oh No, Son Of Orange County, More Trouble Every Day, A Token Of My Extreme.
Stereo Mixes Produced by Frank Zappa with Kerry McNabb at Paramount Studios, 1974. Mastered by Bob Ludwig, Gateway Mastering, 2009
FZ: "This was put together with my own money and my own time and it's been offered to television networks and to syndication and it has been steadfastly rejected by the American television industry. It has been shown in primetime in France and Switzerland, with marvelous results. It's probably one of the finest pieces of video work that any human being has ever done. I did it myself. And the animation that you're gonna see in this was done by a guy named Bruce Bickford, and I hope he is watching the show, because it's probably the first time that a lot of people in America got a chance to see it."- FZ appearing on the Mike Douglas Show, 1976
Because 'Token' has never been commercially released until now, it is one of the most sought after Frank Zappa programs.

AHHH, I made a post asking about the claymation work. I used to know Bruce on a daily basis. He lived down the road from me in Renton, Washington. He was unbelievably artistic and not just in clay, but pure art drawing and painting. He actually told me that Frank shorted him on payments for his claymation work.

@@pgo301that’s surprising because Frank was typically known to honour his contracts - and in some cases actually paid more than asked (an example being him paying the Ikettes $25/hr despite Ike Turner asking frank to only pay $25/session).

I thought he was like the 70's version of Weird Al Yankovic growing up. Just goofy crap. Songs like this just backed that up. It wasn't until I became an adult that I could appreciate the brilliance of his writing and musicianship. Now that I am a guitarist, I can REALLY appreciate how good this guy really is.

I may actually like his comedy music better than his "serious" music. Although they intersect, and there's a bit of his twisted sense of humor in making the London Symphony Orchestra play compositions that originally had lyrics like "squat on my blaster, make it go faster".

I love all Frank's music but his guitar playing in this era of the 70s is my favorite. He let the guitar have a lot of space to breathe between phrases and riffs. His solos also had a lot of good musical quotes that blended well into whatever key was playing in.

I love how he laughed sometimes when he knew some music had silly lyrics. Nice. That claymation was also funny. Some of his songs even have a simple progression like this one.
@jahread3322
@jahread3322 3 года назад
Some of his songs are literally 2 chords...the same 2 chords...thAts one change...for 8 minutes straight if not longer. But they are still incredibly interesting, never get boring, and sound unlike anything’s else. Some of those songs are my personal favorites. He was so full of talent and creativity, so much so that it’s hard to imagine any other musician/composer, save for a few who were equally genius, that came anywhere near the amount of output and singularly unique creativity. We truly are blessed that he decided to make making music his life’s work.

1stinkywizzleteets Frank Zappa is respected around the world by composers of music. I disagree with the music for people who do drugs comment. Most “ drug “ people seem to find his music hard to listen to because it is complex and unpredictable. Drug folk lean on traditional rock; predictable and simple. In the 60’s people would complain about Hendrix or Johnny Winter-saying it was to much too busy. They would get lost. Bye bye!

As a guitarist, Zappa had the pleasure of making up his solo right on the spot. Sometimes he played bum notes, and other times he went off into a place which took him and the audience to another plane. He himself said he shouldn't be rated along with the greatest of guitarists. Those guys rehearsed their solos to perfection and would always wow the audience, but for him to take the chance on just making it up on the spot was more entertaining for him. Take the guitar solo known as Occam's Razor. It had been edited down to become "On The Bus" on Joe's Garage, but the original solo lasted just under 10 minutes and was the guitar solo from Inca Roads, played live in 1978. I ask, how many guitarists play a solo for 10 minutes and keep it fresh? That was Zappa!

so many rock stars believed that they were the eternal stars with eternal drugs. How quickly, how quickly they were all covered by the maggots. Nobody professed Jesus without him.

I am wondering if Bruce Bickford did the claymation work for this. That was some intense work right there. I got to meet Bruce who did plenty of work for Frank and what a really laid back man. Incredibly artistic of course.

I spoke to Dweezil about Frank and asked him did he ever get bored talking about his dad, the answer is NO because he keeps the music alive for new generations
