One of my absolute favourite live performances, Bozzio fantastic, all of them superb but those runs up and down the neck of that guitar? Genius and black magic possibly.
There was a christian rock band called Angel, where all the members dressed in white. Punky Meadows is the name of their guitarist. Angel was signed by Warner Bros., same label as Frank Zappa.
Cheeeeeese! ,....... Lindburger, with notes, but fucking awesome!!!! Pardon the way i say it, but what the fuck! You're gonna hear it anyways. Enjoy and get it on!!!!
You never knew what you might get at a Zappa show. I only got to see him once, but I have several friends who actually met Frank at different local watering holes after having performed somewhere earlier in the evening. He was known to get out and circulate to sample the local talent and music scene. That's kind of how he found and recruited Adrian Belew (the other guitarist in this video) into his band.
Did you happen to see the photo of Punky Meadows that Terry fell infatuated with back in the day? It was in ALL THE MAGAZINES! Although, I don't think it was the best photo of Punky. By the way, Punky gave the okay to this song. I have all of Angel's albums from the beginning. Punky sure was pretty. They were on Casablanca Records. Billy Squire's GF at the time designed their costumes and Sid and Marty Croft designed the huge descending logo. They have a mock of it today. The mouth moves and the eyes light up and move and it talks, although the original is MIA. Kiss told Casablanca to sign them after Gene Simmons saw them, but Angel was so good that Kiss didn't want them to open for them. They had smoke and appeared out of pods on stage like SPINAL TAP. And they would disappear from the stage. I just met Frank Di Mino and Punky Meadows a few weeks ago. AWESOME!! Brought back a lot of memories. They all have interesting post lives, but are making music, say for Gregg Guiffria who is now a business owner of casinos all over Nevada. Punky invested in tanning salons and sold them for a profit to a South American company. Barry Brandt teaches music and Frank does as well and sings for Angel. Micky Jones, unfortunately passed away and Felix Robinson works in music and I believe he has a contract with Universal. Punky has had many encounters with females apparently and Terry Bozzio was married to Dale Bozzio who had a band of her own. The single was called "WALKING IN LA." It was in my collection. They were NEVER TOUTED AS A CHRISTIAN BAND.
When Bozzio says Isn't it romantic Zappa plays the melody of the song with that tittle at 4:36 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5YMt30gnR4g.html
I'm sure I'm not the only one who prefers those late '76 renditions of Punky's Whips, with the horn section (partly because it was played a little slower, and had a few extra bars of riffing in the first half). And, of those, I prefer the edit/mix which is unique to the two-disc version of Zappa In New York, the one with those "loud" guitar/percussion overdubs. I don't think Frank had "the crazed fan mentality" on his mind when he wrote this - he was just amused by Bozzio's struggle with either bisexuality or bi-curiosity. (Bozzio was also frequenting the Gilded Grape around this time - inspiring BHAFA).
