SLEEP DIRT... every song is an amazing Hit...! Just no one has ever heard it... No words, lots of that cool slow base, and of coarse... FRANK PLAYS too...
Mate, you really haven't done your research, Ruth is playing marimba on this track and Napoleon, Ian Underwood and Roy Estrada are on this album, some on the cover art are not, LoL Keyboardist Eddie Jobson and bassist Patrick O'Hearn, who by the time of Zoot Allures' release were members of Zappa's band, appear on the album's cover but do not perform on any tracks. (this album was part of the 4 record deal to Wanker Bros Records) that they did not release until much later.
I hate that this song fades out with the guitar still killing it. I wish it would go on forever, but that's Zappa. As soon as you are comfortable things change or stop altogether. That's why I love Zappa!
I love this track and I love the album. Please do more from it. The big track is "The Torture Never Stops" very dark. But also Wino Man is great fun and Find Her Finer is the mellowist sound.
Even with 113 studio alnums, you can rarely go wrong with Zap. Point of note, Zappa didn't care for lyrics and was strictly an instrumental composer the first seven years of his career.
@@TarantuLandoCalcuLingus Probably earlier than 58. He was 18 then and probably composing music since before that. Didn't start putting lyrics in until the Mothers and I think some of those early 63 and 64 songs also could have been lyrics that Ray Collins wrote.
Well done Mr. McGee! About time we get an FZ instrumental now that you've got a proper introduction to his lyrics and songcraft. I'd like to also suggest another instrumental, "The Purple Lagoon" with those crazy ascending horn triplets.
Zoot Allures was in the concert repertoire from autumn 1975, but the chord/feedback-based theme is actually one he'd been groping towards for a few years (so, similar backstory as Black Napkins and Sleep Dirt). ZA went on to serve as an improv vehicle of greatly variable quality - I personally recommend, as a priority, any version from the early '76 tour (e.g the one from the FZ:OZ album which builds up nicely from spare beginnings, and has the all-important Ship Ahoy interlude).
The Zoot Allures Album was the closest Frank ever came to a solo album...check out the credits...some pieces are almost all Zappa by himself...amazing...The title is a pun on the French expression `Zut alors!` which, though it has no direct translation, conveys mild surprise and may be approximated by `Damn it!`. The title may also refer to the common British expression for a marijuana cigarette...Wowie..zowie!!!
There's lots of orchestral work from Zappa with no lyrics. As somebody below said, he didn't really care much about lyrics. Sometimes he would use his orchestral work and put some silly rhymes on it, like Sofa No2, or Strictly Genteel. "Lord have mercy on the people in England, for the terrible food these people must eat .... "
I've been binge watching this guy's reactions to Frank Zappas music for the last few days and I am not going to try and give a bunch of obscure facts or facts in general like a lot of commentary seem to do. Not only do the sound pretentious, they are things to find out with a little research , which some people actually enjoy doing. What I will comment about is this guy seems to have an actual appreciation for the man's music and the fact he always had in his band a rotating bunch of the finest musicians that all seemed to jump at the chance to play with him. I can say one thing though after seeing Zappa live...to the many people with preconceived notions that his songs are improvised. I felt his songs were surprisingly like recorded , even some of those long guitar solos. Most guitarist when playing live play leads no where close to what they put down on tape
Great song, there are many other versions on other albums, ALWAYS DIFFERENT IN SOME WAY.... He does that with many songs, hell play it in concert, and the beat will be different somehow, it's just endless AWESOMENESS!!!!! SO GLAD YOUR JOURNEY BEGAN......👍
Zappa is my number one. Of all time. Hands down. I have some songs I want you to check out but I'm saving the request till I can check with you to see if it's even possible. Hint: the songs I'll be requesting are on one of his live albums; one that requires listening to three songs at once. Is that something RU-vid will let you do?
@@TarantuLandoCalcuLingus Yes. By far my favorite Zappa album. But if he's gonna react, you have to listen to the songs in the groups they were put in. I'd like to see him do either Penguin/Pygmy/Dummy Up or Village/Echidnas/Don't you ever wash that thing. The cheepnis is sick too, but let's start him from the beginning.
Teez...you will get to it one time soon....you will love Black Napkins......also, you will get to Dinah Moe Humm ...and you will laugh your ass off....best Zappa track ever !!!!
The teeez!!!! We got to, got to got to got to, Zap out! You just hit the tip of the iceberg! jim Baker claimed, ' I merely just stuck the tip in!' There's no way out! You have entered the Zappa world. .... There's no way out! Welcome to the fantastic world of music! Unfettered by radio corporate buffoons with gay suits chasing corporate dollars for plastic radio airplay. Kill ugly radio! Now, at last,...you get to hear real musician's, , playing real music. Mic, Amp, drumstick, bass , percussion, keyboard, brass, ....drop!!!!!!! And all the arcane incurable that goes along with it! Nothing g left to say, but,.... Enjoy!!!!! And live long and prosper! Out.
