I knew this was always going to be better than Dracula. Frankenstein always looked very good, while Dracula had major issues, especially in audio, which pulls me out of the movie. Very, very excited for this and The Bride of Frankenstein!
This is already a no brainer for me because im a massive original monsters movie fan so i will be picking this one up. Thanks for this review, I appreciate it!
Thanks for taking the time to publish your reviews. Excuse my request if you’ve already covered the topic, but please devote a future episode to cleaning and caring for physical media.
@@JeffRauseo I have had 4k as I put in player it would skip. I didn't think to wipe them so I used to take them back for a refund. Now I wipe all 4k but if it pixels at the same spot it is the 4k disc that is damaged.
Perhaps, you will be able to tell how quickly the filmmaking technology improved by watching the 4K release of Bride of Frankenstein. When is that coming out?
Great, comprehensive review. Looking foreword to release of The mummy and bride of Frankenstein (my personal favourite in Universal Horror collection).
Hey Jeff, I was wondering if Frankenstein has its restored audio. I’ve seen comparisons from other releases including: Laserdisc, VHS, DVD and Blu-ray shows that the LD and VHS have the original audio and the DVD and Blu-ray have audio missing.
I respect your opinion and you have great taste but the blu-ray presentation is far more suited to my personal tastes. I came here to decide whether to pick these up in 4K and personally, I think I will stick with the BD. I have all the Universal Monster movies on BD and with the amount I watch them, I think I am fine. Keep up the great work. I enjoy watching your videos.
My set arrived yesterday and I watched Dracula last night. Happy with the quality of the transfer. The packaging was somewhat disappointing sadly. In Ireland its just a very rudimentary package. Just a slip cover over a casing that is similar in size to a single disc set up. Couple of slots inside and each disc clipped in separately. No booklet , photo cards etc. The price was around 60 euro so similar to the US price. Listen, delighted to have the movies on 4k don't get me wrong but for the price better packaging should have been done. Bought the box set for economic reasons really. Made more sense and also I have the Alex Ross blu ray steelbooks as well which in my opinion look better then the new 4k ones. Frankenstein is on the timetable for tonight. Great review as usual 👏 Jeff!,
Really? I expected the UK/Irish release to be using the same kind of packaging as the UK/Irish release of the Alfred Hitchcock Collection from last year. If they're just in a regular case with slipcover I completely understand the disappointment.
@@ijslandernl I was disappointed but having thought about it I think this set may be to ' test the water' and if they sell well then better quality set and more films 🎥 to be released at a later stage. The Hitchcock set is terrific ! I have it
@@thedarkknightish Yes, I've got that set as well and that's exactly the reason I expected this Classic Monsters Collection to use the same packaging. In the US both the Alfred Hitchcock Collection and the Classic Monsters Collection have this packaging that's like a book where the discs slide into the pages. The UK/Irish release of the Alfred Hitchcock Collection has this packaging that folds out and all four sections have this transparent plastic which holds the discs. Of course, I expected this same packaging to be used for the UK/Irish release of the Classic Monsters Collection.
Yep, I commented on Jeff's Dracula review saying this too, was quite disappointed. That said, if the discs are potentially going to be damaged by the US sleeve type packaging maybe we're better off with the standard box! I haven't opened mine as I was considering returning and reordering for the US but it's out of stock on the US amazon.
@@ijslandernl Amazon I must say were very helpful and courteous. I contacted them about my disappointment and they offered a full return. I said I'd rather keep it so they gave me a 35% refund which was very fair I thought
I have a complaint (not really) - your reviews are costing me too much money! :D I just bought this set after watching your Dracula review from this set, and you are right - these movies look absolutely beautiful. Thanks for taking the time to do these reviews, as they're great and they are appreciated.
Clean microfiber towel and a cleaner with good lubricity. I personally use a waterless or rinse less wash product. I got plenty of experience using such product to clean sensitive screens inside vehicles etc and it's what I use to clean discs and my TV screen. Make sure the towel is soft with a GSM of 350 or higher.
You say you can buy all four of them individually in steelbook format and yet The Invisible Man does not yet have availability in the US in steelbook. For some reason it was not released alongside the other three. I’ve been wanting to know why. There is a steelbook available in Germany.
@@JeffRauseo, Zavvi is a UK company and is a region B, the 4K discs are region free, but what about the second disc, BD content, special features, are they not region locked, or am I wrong on this? I’ve preordered the 40th anniversary collectors edition of the Howling from Zavvi but I’m concerned if the discs will be playable here in the U.S. other than the 4K disc. This is the 3 disc set at $55.99, w/shipping and tax $66.24 is the total cost. It would suck if I can’t play the added value content w/o a region free player! So I wonder if I should cancel this order. No stateside region A equivalent coming for collectors?
My Dracula disk from the set did the same think. One fingerprint (from taking it out if the package) threw off the whole thing and it wouldn’t even start!
Is this from the Newly Restored Version??? I know that Dracula got a Complete Restoration and it’s supposed to look and sound awesome. So I’m just wondering if all these are going to be from the Fully Restored Versions.
Hello, just want to say Invisible man 4K Steelbook doesn't exist. I know because I purchased the other 3 at BB, but Invisible Man is nowhere to be seen. I hope it does get a release, but it's weird it got left out. Really enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work!
I have to respectfully disagree about the audio. Dracula sounds fine, Frankenstein still sounds like some additional work can be done. I personally think the LD, while also having issues on its own, sounds a bit more clear and crisper than the Blu-ray mix. Just my two cents.
I finally ordered my set on ebay the other night for $39.99. Does not come with digital code which is fine by me. I have saved quite a bit this past year by looking for listings without codes or slipcases.
$26,99 is expensive for Starbucks from Best Buy but I paid $40 to get the Invisible Man from zavi because for whatever reason it's not available at Best Buy. I got Dracula from Best Buy... The Wolfman and Frankenstein I'm going to wait and see if there are any deals for Black Friday for those
2:20 I don't know, but it looks like the darker hue of the 4K drown out detail and texture that you can see in the blu-ray. (Look closely at the bricks and monster's face.)
Frankenstein had 2 or 3 frame skips/missing frames…..this was disappointing and most likely a restoration error. Meaning, they have the missing frames sitting on a computer somewhere at Universal….but they made an error and didn’t catch it…they then pressed these with 3 missing frames!
I watched The unboxing of the steelbook of Frankenstein 4k from UK on AJ's Movie House and this is in single Format Frankenstein disks and has 2 disks and the disks are stored in the proper format. No sleeves to pull the disks from. I'm looking at other options because 4k movies are region free.So you can get them without having to deal with the sleeve storage format. I know this would be best if you just bought the case itself to store your disks in. Or as I have done is buy storage case's themselves. I know it should be standard across the board But with costs these past 18 months being an issue in production of anything. Corners are being cut.Use the Frankenstein movie as metafor the towns people are rioting because of the sleeve format. Poor Frankenstein 🤣🤣🤣Blamed for Everything 🤪
Were the other two films in this collection ever reviewed? Or the second 4K box set? Just curious. I bought both sets, but I still enjoy the reviews. I was also not a fan of the packaging, but how I avoid the finger print and scratches is individual disc sleeves. I bought a box of 100 for pretty cheap when I got the entire series of Columbo, the clunky disc holders were brutal. I used those disc sleeves for the Alfred Hitchcock box set as well.
I think studios purposely make that packaging poor so that you'll ruin the disc and buy another one. That or force you to buy the more expensive steel book version. I just can't think of any other reason why they continue making the same poor packaging over and over again.
I actually don't mind amplified grain. What's more of an issue with 4k is that it amplifies the DIFFERENCE in grain from one scene to the next, given that any two scenes aren't necessarily shot on the same filmstock and/nor same lighting conditions. The discrepancies can be unintentionally distracting at times.
you mean to say with today,s digital enhancement for classic b&w movies horror fans have to always watch these horror classics by universal studios every year? at least finally release a theatrical version in color then eventually on blu-ray 4k ultra hd for cinema horror collectors.
I'm not sure if I prefer the BluRay too. At least from those screenshots. If the 4k is a lot better then the screenshots really don't sell it all that well.
