www.ultralightflyer.com - Dan Johnson talks to Kelly Bartlett of Franklin Aerospace about his line of aircraft engines, during the EAA Airventure Convention, held in Oshkosh Wisconsin.
Looking for an engine to power your aircraft? You might want to consider the Franklin line of aircraft engines from Franklin Aerospace.
Here are some of the questions you will have to consider.
What does it weigh, I mean really weigh?
Will it fit?
How easy will it be to maintain?
Do I go with the newer generation models with all the bells and whistles?
What kind of support can I expect down the road when issues arise?
What is the best cost/value?
The experimental category is wonderful in many respects. The down side is that we are providing the data base for the manufacturer. Extensive testing in most cases has not been done, so we want to weigh heavily the history or lack thereof of the power plant. Some of these newer models run at a very high RPM requiring additional cooling systems to control operating temperatures, some incorporate high tech ignition systems and fuel control units.
Nice on the surface, but all designed to deliver maximum horsepower at minimal weight and tolerances. It all sounds good but at what expense? Durability could be an issue. Will if fail and how will it fail? Will you be able to work on these in your hanger or able to work on them at all?
At the other end of the spectrum are the more traditional engines of which the Franklin is. The big two and Franklin have engines whose original design date back in the 1940’s and 50’s. This doesn't mean that the engine you purchase today has not evolved and been improved upon but means that the original design was strong enough to with stand the test of time.
Designed with redundancy and simplicity in mind these engines have decades of operating history. No surprises here.
The Franklin engine, specially the 4A-235 that delivers 125 horsepower weighing 235 pounds fully configured. Updated options include, light weight starters and alternators, electronic ignition and Throttle Body fuel injection systems. Major internal components can be inspected and in some cases removed for repair or replacement without removing the engine from the airframe. The cylinders last almost indefinitely as with a simple cylinder liner replacement it is brought back to new tolerances. Air cooled, no reduction drives, FADECS or radiators to break all lower the cost of operation. Maintenance can easily be done by you in most cases due to the simplicity of design.
When it comes to cost/value Franklin Aerospace is more than competitive. Franklin Aerospace supplies overhaul component, Southern Aero, is a Franklin dedicated company that is housed within the Franklin Aerospace facility.
Coupled with an existing inventory of over 500,000 Franklin components with more being added on a continuing basis, the issue of ongoing support is assured. In addition, the ever improving relationship with the Certificate holder in Poland will help assure the supply of critical components in the future as we support and develop the experimental and certificated community.

Great engines, no question. Good to see them back in the game. I grew up flying behind a Franklin Six in Dads Stinson 108-3.

Are the Stinson's adequately powered with the Franklin engines? I wonder how the airplane does at max gross on a hot day🤔?

I was aware Franklin engines were used in Tucker cars and were used in aircraft but never knew about helicopter engines. I own a perfectly running 1929 Franklin135 Which I rarely take out on the road.

Franklin Automotive designed these engines in the very early 1900’s by Herbert Franklin. He was the first Auto maker to use the air cooled engine design. Starting with a 20hp and ending with a 300hp engine. Franklin Automotive went out of business in 1932. From 1945-1947 the engine design and patent was owned by Republic Aviation then 1947 - 1975 Aero Industies then from 1975 to current the Franklin name was revived! Not to be weird about it but if this guy thinks this engine he’s selling was developed in 1975 he needs to open a book.

I wonder if these are the same guys that I hauled a truckload of N.O.S. Franklin engine parts to down in Texas. The trailer also contained Bell 47 heilcopter parts.

What mount does the O350 bolt onto? Is it proprietary or?

I thought Preston Tucker bought Franklin, so they went out of business when he did? Well if they are still around, that should make Scott's Helicopter Services, the current owner of the old Bell 47 type certificate, very happy, since only the Franklin and Lycoming engines were approved, and they were crying that they couldn't get engines anymore.

I like the fact there one piece cylinder head and they are sleeved big savings in an overhaul

no unless you want to cert experimental
@soconnoriv

It’s possible to do it without being experimental if you can get a field approval from your local FAA FSDO

Would love a Continental A65/A75 replacement from Franklin.

I believe they had a 2 cyl of about 65 hp in the way back when. Also, Franklin was the basis for the Tucker rear engine sedan. It was a water cooled opposed six. (0-335?)

Daniel Nunn - Tucker bought the Franklin aircraft engine company to make engines for their cars. When Tucker went bankrupt, they took Franklin engines down with them. A double loss.

No, you don’t. I put a brand new PZL Franklin in my 170B 18 years ago. It added 300 pounds to the empty weight and moved the CG so far forward it became impossible to do 3 point landings. Loved the airframe, made me sick to ruin it with that oil eating thing. But it was strong as could be and never failed to start.

I've seen around the 1,500. But the cost of overhaul is at least $10,000 less.
