Frans Hals was a celebrated Dutch portrait painter of the Baroque era. He was an important representative of the so-called "Golden Era" of Dutch painting.
He was born in Antwerp, Netherlands, in 1582 - but spent most of his life in Haarlem. He was trained as an artist and was a member of an artists' guild.
He was married twice and it is estimated that he had at least 10 children, five of whose sons were also trained as painters. He was able to make a good living from his work, although he was regularly in debt. However, he died in poverty in 1666 at the age of 84.
He is particularly known for his lively and expressive portraits. In his individual portraits, he painted people of different ages and social status, capturing the personality and spirit of his models.
He also painted portraits of prominent people of his time, including writers, scholars and other well-known personalities.
His portraits of children often focus on a cheerful and informal atmosphere. Most of his works are group portraits, often showing members of civic militias, guilds, families, or other social groups. These paintings are known for their dynamism and the interactions between the subjects are often shown.
His style was characterized by loose brushstrokes and a natural depiction of personalities, creating an informal atmosphere in his works. He was also a pioneer in the use of light and shadow to create depth and volume in his paintings.
It is estimated that he created more than 300 paintings during his career. Although he enjoyed recognition during his lifetime and had many students, he was somewhat forgotten. Nevertheless, some 200 years after his death, his work was rediscovered by artists such as the 19th century Impressionists.

What I particularly liked about his portraits was that he captured such incredibly friendly faces. This week I will be presenting Pablo Picasso next. I hope you enjoy the video.
