0:00 - C major, S.137/1
1:04 - A minor, S.137/2
3:48 - F major, S.137/3
9:18 - D minor, S.137/4 (Wenbin Jin)
15:01 - B flat major, S.137/5
18:57 - G minor, S.137/6
24:48 - E flat major, S.137/7
30:19 - "Pandaemonium" C minor, S.137/8
37:09 - A flat major, S.137/9
47:45 - F minor, S.137/10
53:08 - D flat major, S.137/11
1:05:26 - B flat minor, S.137/12
I felt compelled to make this score video as the video of Wenbin Jin’s Naxos album has multiple irritating editing errors, uses an obsolete non-urtext edition, and Jin’s recording is sometimes hesitant and always earthbound. Janice Weber’s recording from 1988 even antedates Leslie Howard’s, and it is played confidently, smoothly, and with such zest and elan. I hope you enjoy this video of an underplayed and wickedly difficult set by Liszt.
Pf: Janice Weber

Note for anyone else who was confused like me: The title card says "24 Grandes Etudes" because 24 etudes were initially planned by Liszt, yet only 12 were actually written.

Here it is, what I unfairly called the “intermediate” version of the Transcendental Etudes. These are just as complex and difficult as the final version we all know and love (to listen to).

Pheraps harder. I heard that Liszt made the final "transcendental" etudes to simplify the douze grande etudes a bit

@@TheModicaLiszt Pavel's is much more expressive imho, I believe they slightly slower tempo and extra rubato helps bring out the notes, and honestly mate, I haven't heard anything as beautiful as the middle section being played by him. His use of the ossias for 7 octave pianos is also real nice, Wenbin sadly just ignores them for the entire set. Whilst Pavel's performance of the Étude isn't perfect (nothing is, as everything can always be improved upon) I personally still prefer it to the latter.
