That's why someone like Mike Brearley (who was an average batsman) could transform a team's fortunes when he stepped in as captain. In terms of group psychology, look at how Michael Vaughan handled difficult personalities like Kevin Pietersen and Freddie Flintoff, while Strauss and Cook struggled. Batting is mostly an individual sport - although you need to adjust your play depending on who you're batting with, and also adjust according to the dynamics of the match... this is the difference between an individualist, stats-driven batsman like Geoff Boycott (the cricket equivalent of Ruud van Nistelrooy), and a team-oriented batsman like Steve Waugh. Bowling is massively dependent on the fielding and the dynamic between the bowlers - do you play 5 slips and go for the edge? Do you play two strike bowlers, or do you block an end with an economical bowler? Do you tempt the slog and leave a catcher out for it? Does the keeper step up to the medium pacer for the stumping? Do you try to faze the batsman with a short catcher in his eyeline? These are all team decisions that involve multiple players executing their roles effectively.
