His agent fucked him over. He still wanted to be a Brave. He got blindsided by the trade after his agent gave the Braves a hour ultimatum to sign. When he done that, the Braves said fuck that. @Bigstevo101
@Bigstevo101 2 года назад
@@531ff There's 3 things wrong with that view point. He's still getting that deferred money so he's still making 20 mil more now he just has guaranteed multi million dollar payments till 2040. The arguing point for a good chunk of the negotiation was a 6th year which he got. It also emplies the LA offer didn't drop at all once ATL opted out which is highly unlikely. LA likely offered more when they thought ATL had a real chance to bring him in. If he brought a hardline 175 mil number and a 1 hour timeline to the table he probably had that same contract offered by the Dodgers and wanted to give ATL a final chance to match. It's good negotiation especially if he wanted to stay give them one more shot, he was showing some loyalty by giving them final say. If they choose to then add a guy within that window and not tell him their leaning that direction thus sabotaging his negotiation with LA thats not a great look by the organization letting a guy walk is one thing completing a trade during a negotiation window with said player that yanks his value to other clubs is another entirely. Let's be honest its a 6 player package the paperwork and players alone would have already had to be pretty nuch agreed to in principle by ATL/OAK. They could have told him at that price they are gonna go another direction andgiven him time to sign his LA deal first. Theres no way this Olsen trade materialized in 30 mins they had it ready in case Freddie signed elsewhere and then Freddie made the mistake of offering them the ability to match and they went fine will trade now and tank your market that's not operating in good faith. Maybe if their honest with him he signs with the Dodgers before the Olsen thing is even finalized. No way to know how much the offer dropped when he got blindsided, at the end of the dah it's just business for both him and LA so the offer changed when other offers don't exist. Both the Braves and Freeman behaved how one would expect in a negotiation, other than not telling Freeman they're looking another direction onve he gives them a chance to match. I think that's where you see this anger and distaste for AA coming from and its understandabke he took money out of Freddies pocket then spun it on him in a press conference and worse yet Freddies so called friend who happens to be an organization member Chipper also publicly came out and spun it as Freddie playing too much hardball. To break it down as I called his bluff and he didn't make the money because it's deferred is silly backpedaling trying to spin the narrative that his camp did something wrong by getting almost exactly what they asked for they got 20 mil more dollars and the sixth year plus the financial stability of deferred payments. No reasonable person would call the Braves offer comparable. Also this shows any player that works in the Braves org you either offer a team discount or the organization will have everyone even rhe former players you trusted come out to tell everyone you weren't being reasonable. That doesn't exactly invite interest in being there. If you fire me or move on fine but having random people associated with the organization publicly stating its my fault because people that want to be there would be is just tacky and Chipper is trash for ever doing it.

I'm a life-long Dodgers fan so am benefitting from Freeman joining the 'Boys in Blue'. He can say he was hurt that Atlanta moved on from him but to say he was blind sighted is naïve. Did he really expect the Braves to sit around and do nothing until he signed with another team even after he had already rejected their latest and best offer to him? What was his expectations, was he expecting the Braves to sit around until he signed elsewhere due to some misguided tribute he felt he earned? Baseball is a business, and those who forget that get scarred by the point of that sword. The Braves did exactly what they should've done... probably should have done it sooner... and that was to trade for someone who could come in and replace Freeman's production in the lineup and on the field in Matt Olsen. The Braves did GREAT with their "Plan-B" and lest anyone forget... owe it to the fans to field the best team they can and they did that by bringing in Olsen. What Freeman was REALLY saying is, he wanted the Braves to be willing to pay even more. He wanted the Braves to pay a number HE thought he was worth and felt hurt that the business part of baseball was getting in that way. A team can only pay so much for a player, there's not an unlimited purse string whereby they can pay everybody whatever they think they're worth and still turn a profit. And for any baseball fan who doesn't understand that, NOBODY is in business to lose money so no, it's not about "Winning at all costs." Freeman really messed up here. He would've made $5m more over the first 5-years of the deal with Atlanta, then whatever follow-up contract he signed that first year would've also been used to compare it to the Dodgers 6-yr offer so let's say after the 5-years in Atlanta he follows that up with a 3-yr $54m contract ($10m less/year than the previous contract) so add that $18m to the $5m and he would've made somewhere around $23m more contract dollars by staying with the Braves. Now, let's also factor in the differences in taxes between California and Georgia and that $23m is probably closer to $35-$40m more over these next 6-years and it's pretty obvious Freeman let his emotions get in the way of his impartial business sense. The only way him signing with the Dodgers makes sense is if he wanted to come home and didn't care how much money he left on the table to to do it but short of that, he really messed up here. That said, he's now a Dodger and we'll love and support him while he plays for and wears the blue - Go Freddy Go!

As a Braves fan, I'm sad and hurt to see Freddie leave, but I agree with Rene's analysis on this. It's not a simple 162 > 140. There are a lot of other consideration that go into what Freddie will ultimately make. I get a feeling, however, that the money was only really part of the story here. At the Dodger's press conference, I didn't get the sense that Freddie was too comfortable with the questions presented. Freddie, himself, admitted that he wanted to stay in Atlanta. Overall, Freddie is a great player and the Dodgers are a great organization, so perhaps, this is a match made in heaven. Though, many of us in Braves country really saw Freddie as a life-long Brave, much the same as Chipper and Hank. I really do wish Freddie the best with LA, no doubt LA has a pretty potent lineup (even without Freeman). He will be missed dearly in the ATL, but the Braves did the right thing by moving on when they could.

I think it is a bad trade. The money is about the same. You do get a couple of more years with Olson but you gave up 3 top prospects so you gutted your farm system. When Anthopoulos was talking about signing Olson to the new contract, he made a very telling statement: "Matt wanted to be here." I think that while Freddie was happy as a Brave, and surely loves Brian Snitker, his heart was always leaning toward LA. He's from southern California, so that makes sense. All the best to Freddie, I hope he finishes second in every first baseman category there is. He actually gets an extra year in LA. If the Braves offered Freddie the same deal as he was given in LA, he would still be a Brave. The Braves were only willing to give him a five year deal. Freddie wanted a six year deal. So yes, Freddie makes slightly less than a million less a year in LA. However, let's do some quick math. For simplicity's sake, let's just say he makes exactly $1 million less in LA. Take that and multiply it by five (the length of the deal Atlanta was offering) and you get $5 million. LA is giving him like $26 million in the sixth year. Subtract the $5 million and it comes out to $21 million dollars. He is making more with this deal. AA is a disingenuous jackass, but he is a successful disingenuous jackass. Those were 100% crocodile tears to pander to fans. My bet is he started to look into the sun to make his eyes water. Actions speak louder than a performance given in an interview. If AA was really that broken up about moving on, you would think he would have CALLED Freddie before the trade was announced. Freddie answered that question about AA's "crying" the most classy way possible. He could've said, "Yeah, I guess he got the sun in his eyes right then. Well played, Alex." Instead he just said the simple fact that he saw them and let you decide if he feels they were genuine or not.

@@seanmanes2874 Ahhh yes, I love it when people, such as yourself, choose to ignore facts as they are publicly known and have been confirmed by multiple sources. Ahhh yes, I love it when people, such as yourself, blindly take the side of a player no matter the situation, rather than looking at each situation independently and using facts and logic to discern what happened. His own introductory press conference with LA only reinforced what was reported. Did you see the press conference? I did. Freddie behaved uncharacteristically and said some things out of character during that conference. Why? Because he was embarrassed at how his representatives botched the entire negotiation process and his feelings were hurt. And I'm not blaming Freddie. Your words, not mine. I simply stated facts that you find inconvenient, so you use the elusive "no one knows what he thinks!" defense for a straw man's argument. You don't care about facts? Fine. Your call. Again, for review---Freddie knew in Spring Training 2021 what the deal was---he had the deal then. He refused. The Braves upped the dollar amount at All-Star Break, he refused again, even though the dollar value was much closer to what Freddie said he wanted. Only this time, Freddie added a 6th year which wasn't part of his original ask. Freddie kept moving the finish line. The Braves again offered more money, though not more years, and in response, his agent gave the Braves 2 completely different deals and gave them an ultimatum---you have 1 hour to accept one of these proposals. Now, do these tactics at all, the facts known at hand, contradict anything I said in my original post? The Braves had a 5-year limit, right or wrong, and a dollar amount figure in mind. Freddie knew all of this a full year in advance. And....he kept moving the endzone back. He played the game and got burned. Could ATL have offered more money? More years? Sure. I wish they would have because I wish he was still in ATL. It made me sick to my stomach to see him take an at-bat the other day in a Dodger uniform during Spring Training. But....it was never going to happen and here we are. And don't accuse others for being childish and immature simply because you disagree with them. It's childish and immature, is it not? And, you don't know me, bud. And enough of the condescending bs about "Braves fans showing their true colors." Everyone's feelings are hurt---Freddie's and the fans. The day he signed with LA will always hurt, for me, as much as when Dale Murphy was traded, when David Justice was traded, when Tom Glavine signed with Mets, and when Smoltzie signed with the Red Sox. I will never forget any of that, and I will never forget this. If you respond to this post, that's fine with me because I'm not going to respond. I've said my piece and I'm extremely comfortable in my position as a lifelong Braves fan who has been a fan since the early 80s when like 17 people attended each game. They were perennial losers of 100 or more games back then and I was a fan and attended games. If that doesn't make me a loyal Braves fan who loves the players then I've got nothing else for ya.

The Dodgers will no doubt move on from him in 3 years, something the Braves never would have done. His contract due to deferrals is only worth a present day value of 142/6 years, which equates to 23 1/2 million a year. Him saying "I didn't know what was going on" is a lie. He knew what was going on and what the offers were, he just didn't like them and didn't like that they didn't negotiate more. Also why would the Braves tell them they're moving on? Once it was all said and done, I was happy the Braves ended up with an All-Star caliber 1st baseman, and I was hoping that Freddie was happy with his deal he got to go back to his hometown. Then he made these comments. . . Plus the fact that he claims the Braves only called him a couple of times since the season ended. Here's my read: I think whatever number Freddie was looking for, he didn't get it. Once the Braves signed Olson, he lost a lot of his leverage and just had to take the best deal still on the table. I also think his mindset was that if nobody would bite on the amount he was asking for, he would just go back to ATL. That's why he's salty that they didn't warn him about the Olson deal. If AA had called and said, "sign with us by {fill in the blank time and date} or we're moving on" then Freddie would have signed like 5 minutes before that deadline. But I think Chipper is right. This really just indicates that Freddie was getting bad advise and was maybe a little naive about how the negotiation process works. AA isn't going to show his hand to Freddie or his camp because he doesn't know for sure their current mindset. Freddie just has to be aware that while he has a certain amount of leverage, the club(s) he's negotiating with have some too. The Braves had leverage in the fact that Matt Olson was available and they had an offer for him on the table. And it's naive of Freddie to think that they'll just continue to sit around and not make that move so long as he hasn't made a decision. I still love Freddie, and I think he'll always hold a special place in the hearts of Braves fans. This won't be something that will cause much animosity towards him (unless he begins to terrorize the Braves in the postseason). But in the end, I think the story will be that Freddie left because of his own miscalculations and the bad advice he received from agents and others in his camp going into contract negotiations.

The phone works both ways, Freddie. Oh no, the Braves only called you twice this offseason? Well, there was a lockout for one. Secondly, they had these talks with you before the All-Star break last season. You rejected their offer, and Chipper even warned you about what could happen by playing this game. So let's not act like we're all surprised by this. Just like Chipper said, AA has a job to do. If you really wanted to stay in Atlanta, you would have taken less money like you just did with the Dodgers.
@holly_wood26

You said! Ironically signing with the Braves at 140/5 would have given him the most money. Dodgers contract b/c of deferrals is only worth 142/6 at present day value which is 23.6 million a year and then you factor in the higher taxes it's even worse.

I'm kind of disappointed in his reaction towards AA. This was not on AA. If anyone is to blame for this not working out it is Freddie by extension of his agent. The Braves could NOT just wait and wait and wait without indication from Freddie as to what he was going to do. The Braves DID let Freddie know that they were going to make the Olsen move. To imply otherwise is nothing more than fantasy. I don't think Freddie is handling this well - I think he settled for LA and the Braves are better now than they were. AA, said fuck around and find out. Well. they did and found out AA was not having it. Chipper even warned him not to test the Braves as AA would call his bluff. Freeman has an agent for a reason, that's is the person that negotiates on his behalf. He should have made it clear he wanted to stay with the Braves. I will miss Freeman playing for Atlanta without a doubt. I will also welcome our new first baseman Olson as within 24hrs he agreed to an 8 year contract. The deal he declined from Atlanta is not that, at all. The Braves didn't offer him a crap deal hoping he'd sign for a "hometown discount." Instead, it appears Freddie wanted the Braves' front office to give him a "hometown payday" that wouldn't make sense for their team. If he wanted to be a Brave for life, he would have signed there.
