On pinata Freddie really adapted to Madlib and Madlibs style but on bandana it seemed like the opposite. Madlib was going out of his usual zone and creating stuff that really fit Freddie's style
You can tell he’s biased for a certain genre of music. Itekoma hits got a 9/10 Daughters album got a 10/10 Death grips albums get a 10/10 Swans Albums get a 10/10
Jamie sounds about right. My order of those 5: 4. Kids See Ghosts 3. You Won't Get What You Want 2. The Money Store 1. To Pimp A Butterfly (Haven't listened to To Be Kind yet, in the middle of listening to Swans discography in chronilogical order)
RitzKrakerz totally agree, shit is my 2nd favorite song after fake names and that beat switch. But he’s right, Freddie went nuclear weapons testing on this one
Killer Mike while smooth on the chorus I did kinda wish that he spit a verse or two tbh And tbf while Piñata is better, I can’t Deny the highs on this album
@Vatnik no mumble rap, he channeled Krayzie Bone from Bone Thugs N Harmony. "thuggin smokin lethal warrior." But it was definitely outside of what we would expect.
Roughly around the time of pinata. The beats on Pinata were probably his signature SP303, some were also made years before 2014, but MED's stuff in late 2014 and 2015 were defo made on iPad (Bad Neighbour)
housekeys doubt it. Madlib been MAJOR CAPPIN. These were not made on an ipad. Maybe some but not most. Many of the beats used for piñata and Bandana can be found on rare beat tapes like raw cake. If he did make them on an ipad they were prolly recreations of what he had on CD which makes more sense since Freddie said he had tons of actual CD and couldnt play them because he needed a CD player. I feel like madlib made the SONGS on an ipad not the beats idk if u get me
@@josechamu240 I get you but madlib isn't responsible for making the songs. He's probably present during mixing sessions but he just makes the beats. And you gotta listen closely to hear they're made on ipad. Or atleast some sort of DAW or modern tech, it doesn't carry the sound of his older and better stuff.
Gat Damn is one of the stronger songs in the album imo. Freddie’s hopeful yet grisly voice rapping about staying positive in prison and working to fight the devil is uplifting and a definite vibe
It’s honestly a little overrated I think. The beat is overly looped and Pusha really doesn’t sound that good over it (not considering lyrics). That + the Antivax line.
Yeah I agree. to be honest I think it's a little soon to say that pinata is better when we've had 5 years to soak it up. we need to give bandana a fair amount of time before conclusions can be made.
@@ptrcrispy the production isnt better💀 pinata production more abstract and classy. the way he was chopping up those samples. madlib stole the spotlight from freddie in pinata
How does Madlib using digital technology have anything to do with beat switches? You make it sound like the iPad allowed him to achieve this amazing feat lmao
Lol Fantano doesn't really know what he's talking about here. Madlib uses an MPC app so it's really not all that different than what he's done before. Id bet the whole "Madlib only uses analogue" thing is overblown and he's used programs like Ableton before.
Piñata was better imo. Had more memorable songs, and I prefer the production as well. Bandana is still a great album on its own though, it’s the best album I’ve heard so far this year.
Piñata was 10/10 for me But bandana... not that it underwhelmed or disappointed me it just wasn't piñata, but so far it's one of my aotys I'd give it an 8 as well
@@JYGtube I know, freddie has improved a ton since then but my biggest gripes with the album are probably the beats, their great ( no shit madlib made them) but none of them pack as much punch as say, shitsville or deeper, shame, thug gin that dosnt mean to say there aren't standouts tho, get damn and fake names along with the yassin bay track were amazing.
@@sunnyenno9468 Yeah I agree tbh, Bandana is definitely a solid album but I feel like the overall vibe especially the majority of beats on pinata are more akin to my tastes.
@I’m Right, You’re Wrong So don’t R/woosh me yeah, he has a few great songs here and there but a few songs like "I love it", "Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1", "All Mine" or his fucking lame ass verse on Pusha's "Infrared" make me want to scratch my head and say "really Kanye?"... I guess those songs are average and not really that bad, but I'm looking for something as great as MBDTF where he used to rap for more than 20 seconds and where the production was jaw dropping. Not impressed by current Kanye.
@@oshin_aykaz6889 I'm speaking everything after Yeezus, you can't say his latest music is at MBDTF level, you just can't... also, I would say some of his worst songs ever have came out after 2015
Situations was my favorite on track on it... It felt like a return to form to one of Freddie's older styles. Love his flow and melodic style to it. It's a bop.
I don't necessarily agree with your assessment of Freddie stepping up & Madlib being less consistent. I actually enjoyed the slight experimentation that Madlib used on this album. I found the "cleaner" sounds of Half Manne & Situations actually worked really well with the haunting & sparse melodies he used on those beats to create a cold & harsh vibe that was perfect for Freddie's voice. It makes the album slightly less coherent sound wise as we don't have a sustained nostalgic, old school vibe anymore, but IMO the one flaw of Pinata was how much some of the instrumentals blended together, so I really appreciated the added dynamics these weirder beats offered. I could have done with a couple more introspective storytelling tracks on this album in the same vein as "Broken" or "Deeper", or even something with the intense passion of "Shitsville". If anything I felt that Freddie was a little flatter & less emotionally expressive on Bandana than on Pinata. All in all though I agree it's a great album. It's a solid 8/10 for me as well, & one of my albums of the year so far
Anthony. Holy fuck. I just listened to the money store for the first time and oh my fucking god. I dont know why I kept on putting it off saying I dont think I like them. The album actually put me in a trance. Totally deserved 10/10
crazy how this has only been out for a year and is maybe the only album where if a song from it comes on shuffle in one of my playlists, i leave that playlist immediately and just listen thru the album in full like 3 or 4 times. 10/10 album, idgaf
I actually thought this was better than pinata in how cohesively it flowed as an album, and I LOVE pinata so I didn't think they'd find a way to outdo themselves. From a technical standpoint, I think both of them did
So palmolive has a decent hook from Killer Mike, one of the best Pusha T features to date, but just cuz of the antivax line you didn't include it in the best tracks at all
Papadoc1981 so you base one‘s passion for a certain genre based on what melodies they like? Sounds fair. The beat is very flat for Madlib standards and that vocal sample being looped over and over and over does not exactly make it exciting to listen to. I’ve listened to all of Bandana for like 20 times by now and it’s by far the track I revisit the least
It goes to show how good of an ear for things Fantano has considering that in an interview Madlib said he tried to let Freddie have more of a voice on this project
I pads have way way more technology than most drum machines in circulation at the moment so it should not be looked upon as incredible I pads are equipped with so much production power
Not a single skippable track for me lived to my expectations and I've been listening to it on repeat non-stop. Definitely my favorite album of the year and now we wait for Montana
something tells me that freddie just wouldn’t give a fuck that “anti vax bars probably aren’t a good idea.” bro has a music video where a crackhead is literally smoking crack center frame. also gat damn top 1 bandana for sure
