It’s been awhile since I’ve listened to this interview and I guess I missed the part about him having written We Are the Champions as early or earlier than when he was writing material for ANATO. I was really surprised, and I really don’t know why, because Freddie was a musical genius, but, looking back, it would not have fit on Opera, Races, or Jazz, but it did fit perfectly on NOTW. I remember Roger holding onto SHA as early as the 3rd album of the same name because, like Freddie with Champions, he said it wasn’t right for that album, but with NOTW it was. In this interview, Freddie sounds so more mature and experienced in the music industry and he has a clear vision where Queen is going. When the interviewer ask about the change in style of their music from the early days, Freddie’s answer was very articulate in his answer. They were not afraid to expand on their music abilities and answer with music of the time. Some worked, others didn’t, but they didn’t let it deter them in experimenting and kept moving forward to stay relevant and not get stuck in a particular box of music style. This was the key to their success and why their music today is timeless and still played on the radio and adored by new generations of fans. The answer about not using synthesizers in the early days was informational not that they were against them was perfect, too, yet people still get it twisted that they sold out to synths in the 80’s which is not necessarily true. Brian could and still shows what his “Old lady” can do, but the synthesizers were used so he could also highlight his guitar for other things.
