Finding free and legal images to use for your graphic design project can be frustrating - sometimes you find a great picture or illustration but you don't know if you have the rights to use it. Here I cover a site called Project Gutenberg: Free eBooks. Project Gutenberg is a site that contains over 60,000 completely free and legal books. Many of these books contain pictures. These books are great for grabbing vintage illustrations, or also just reading the book! There are great public domain books like Pride & Prejudice, Dracula and A Tale of Two Cities.
"Public Domain" means that there are no known copyright restrictions on the work. This means that you are free to download, use, remix, edit and sell these images as part of your artwork or creative project.

I remember in the mid 90s, the prehistoric era of the internet, that Project Gutenberg was one of the few big but useful websites out there.

Great ideas! What's weird for me is the same bookshelf shows different numbers than yours. Ex Children's Picture Books says 38280. In fact all the categories have lower numbers than what's on your screen. 🤷🏻‍♀️

All the art prints showed in your videos show that vintage illustrators/painters were better at their craft than recent artists. Big difference in style, in perception of subject matter, in execution of their work, the look, everything. We have lost a great deal of talent.

I have a question pls, how do we download the images to use them, or do we just save them (right click+ save pic as). Also, I really appreciate what you are doing you are amazing.
@craftystax
@craftystax 2 года назад
Yes I just right click and save the images. Some of them might need to be cleaned up (like remove backgrounds or imperfections, or run through Inkscape to make clean vectors). Thank you for the kind words, it is much appreciated!

Awesome video....can I use these public domain children's books to sell on Kindle?
@craftystax
@craftystax 2 года назад
Well sort of. Amazon states that they don't allow public domain books to be sold directly on Amazon. But you could use the designs and/or the book's words to create a new piece of art, and that you could sell on Amazon.

Hi CS, are these Public Domain in UK?
@craftystax
@craftystax Год назад
It's a good question and it becomes even more fuzzy because online vendors are pretty much global. So I would say that generally speaking, if you are selling something online, as long as you can point to a U.S. public domain, you are generally OK. (And yes some people are going to not agree but my point is there is no one legislative body on this stuff). It has been my experience that if you can point to U.S. public domain, generally any third-party seller site will be OK with it.

If they're online books, the images would be low-res, wouldn't they?

You can use inkscape to scale them may be?
@craftystax
@craftystax 3 года назад
Yes exactly - if they are black and white, they are pretty easy to scale up using Inkscape

The problem is Guttenberg only gives US public domain. How do I find out if public domain is world wide?
@craftystax
@craftystax 2 года назад
In the US, any work published before January 1, 1926, anywhere in the world is in the public domain.

Zen, I'm worried that this may be too good to be true. I'm not convinced that we can use these illustrations for commercial use. I've read through the Project Gutenberg license at the end of Hound of the Baskervilles and Huckleberry Finn, and they both seem to be identical. After reading all that legalese in there (which I would equate to "fine print"), I'm not convinced that I can slap one of those illustrations onto a T-shirt and sell it on Spring or Redbubble or whatever. Are you sure you're reading the fine print?
@craftystax
@craftystax 3 года назад
Hey there - these are public domain images. The copyright has expired on them. It doesn't matter what the book itself says (because it was written when it first came out). Sherlock Holmes (for example) is absolutely public domain: www.latimes.com/books/jacketcopy/la-et-jc-sherlock-holmes-public-domain-20140805-story.html
