We got the dreaded "knock" while camping in Kentucky so we left for Indiana and found an amazing free campground called Buzzard's Roost with a great view of the Ohio River which we hiked to in this video. We spent several days camping in the rain and checking out the rocks. We found some chert and interesting limestone with pink dolomite crystals.

Yeah, I hope you guys do come back up to Indiana! That stretch along the Ohio River is scenic indeed, and the boat traffic on the water is fun to watch. Your drone footage is really amazing! Thank you so much for the flights! It is sad that there isn't more free camping possibilities in the eastern US, and I'm thinking that most anything around my area (Bloomington/Spencer) would require a fee. I'll do some checking around, though. Of course, the facilities and luxuries of the Squirrel Nest are at your disposal, should you pass this way! Travel safely! And, thank you Greg for the nod!

I have some expressions for you: “Don’t that just take the rag of the bush.” It’s used when you are completely frustrated and exasperated by a situation. It literally refers to someone stealing a rag that was put out to dry. Honestly, someone who would steal rags would have to be “lower than the belly of a snake in a wagon rut.” I’m going to stop with these now. Otherwise, you’re going to be so confused you won’t know “if you found a rope or lost a mule.” In all seriousness, I really enjoyed this video. The drone shots were very impressive. Stay safe out there.

Elizabethtown, pretty area, cool movie! Ohio. Indiana, Illinois, all pretty areas but kinda spooky vibes with the limestone formations and oak trees and some of the forests in general. Just love the river views. And nice catching the barge! We have the I&M canal by me, which was built to connect the Mississippi River at the Illinois River to Lake Michigan at the Chicago River. Originally, there were horse-drawn barges down the canal. I loved seeing the barges going down the river and through the locks. That was an interesting little memorial you guys came across. Decent campsite, lol, the second one. That sounded like it gave yous a bunch of anxiety! Would of me! Rangers and Conservation are not to be messed with. Good they let you off. Shame you guys couldn't of snagged all that wood. Cool seeing the limestone with dolomite on it! Cool video guys, enjoyed the laughs, too, like when Liz was zooming into her eye 😅 Have a great week ahead and take care, my friends 🙂
@TheAdventureCloset
@TheAdventureCloset Год назад
It really did give us some anxiety. I think they thought we were up to no good and it didn't feel good to be treated as if we were. Wish we had filmed it, but we wanted to be respectful at the same time. Gonna have to add Elizabethtown to our list now. Haven't seen that one. Oh and the barges made that campsite extra cool. We don't have freight running through the rivers wherevwe're from so it was extra fascinating. Wished we had caught more of that while in the great lakes area. Would love to see the I&M canal!

Ye old Buzzard's Roost is a sweet little gem, especially after the last place! I'll take no frills for a peaceful night of sleep. Bummer about the neighbor's generator though. You could keep a bottle of cheap nail polish if you get a tick on you - suffocates them so they back out to get away & grab them with some tweezers. In case you didn't know that trick. My favorite & well used old saying is, "Pizzed as a wet hen!" lol

Northern and Southern Indiana is beautiful, the center is all private owned farmland, with a patch of trees here and there. P.S the ticks have been really bad in southern Indiana over the last year, other than that, copper heads and timber rattlers are the only other things in Southern Indiana you have to watchout for, although they probably aren't out yet. We do have 1 black bear around Madison, but he won't bother you.

Assuming that you aren't just straight up setting up tents etc, you are allowed by law to stay at any highway rest stop for up to 8 hours and sleep. You might get the "knock" during your allotted 8 hours if you pull over during the day, but even then that is mostly just to ensure that you aren't just nodding off from drugs. If you get the knock during your 8 hours while pulling a night stop, then it is either coming from a lot lizard or douche canoe of a cop that doesn't really have the legal authority to harass you to begin with. Of course, that only goes for "rest stops" and not gas station truck stops.

That don't seem right at all to me. If the place is 24 hrs open to the public, and a member(or two) of the public find themselves passing through the designated 24 hour area, not happening upon "camping" locations, but then, despite their most earnest intentions and dogged planning rituals, well, what if they just up and done found themselves plumb outta steam and yet they were still in operation of their mechanical conveyance when in the coarse of their noticing how tuckered out they had become, well my question is what then are a citizen travelers o do in that situation?? Is the safest thing in that case to pull off the public thoroughfare in a location suitable for the powering down of the mechanical conveyance, and await the arrival of officials to determine if you seem to have gotten any rest in which case you will remain until sufficiently harassed for your decision to not stay awake for any amount of time that falls within the 24 hours of access that is allotted for non-sleeping persons only xcept for if an unconcious or sleeping individual is not the operaor of a motr vehicle that is occupied by an awake person while inside the property so long as the non sleeping individual is making every reasonable attempt to prevent the restful sleep of the other as allowing their passenger to sleep within the borders of the park without going where the paint is different to indicatre, and oh, we almost forgot, Wlecome to the Croissroads of America. What a horrible way to wake up. I hate that dreaded knock and they treat you like you are a criminal! But you guys now know where not to stay in Kentucky or Indiana and life goes on thankfully you all are young enough to be able to deal with these things. I'm old enough that I would have been thrown in jail for telling that park ranger not to bother me before noon and to tell me his mother's name and number of so I could call her and see if she was aware of what her son did and how little respect he had for his elders and etc! Lol. That's just me! It's probably a good thing I don't camp. Lol. 😂

This is the best comment ever! 🤣 Wish you were there for this then. I bet that guy would have left with his tail between his legs.

There's a ton of rangers not worth speaking about. I'd put that behind you and move on. Personally I'd go back out west if you can.

It is much easier to camp for free in the West, but we wanted to see what was beyond the Rockies.

The Ranger still violated your RIGHTS. Absolutely NO reason to get ID especially from tourist's. I'd file a complaint. He wouldn't have gotten my ID unless he would've arrested me. Court WILL throw it out & then you sue. It's happened to me many time's (6) & I won every time. Cop's don't know the law.

It was a very strange interaction like we had committed a crime. We're not criminals at all, so it didn't feel good to be treated as such.

Sorry you got treated as criminals but at least the Kentucky Park Rangers take their job seriously. I found where I am in NC, they don’t take anything serious! I couldn’t recall in my head where Indiana was on the map and I guess that state is a place I doubt I would ever visit. A friend of mines daughter just died from an overdose in Indiana. Not the states fault, but I am now not in a hurry to ever visit that state. 😒

You don't really hear much about Indiana. Mostly farm land and there is a lot of poverty too. We barely dipped into the state but we liked this camping area.
