Back in 1980 my Mom, God rest her sole, had a Class C Mobile Traveler. She stayed a couple of months in Slab City. Loners On Wheels was the group she hung out with. She played the piano there and danced with her friends. I Flew out that year to help her drive back home to the midwest and she took me here to meet her friends. She really enjoyed her nomad life. Thanks for the trip back in time Eric!

Funny thing, I had been to Slab City before you went there and I feared for the three of you that month. I subbed you, James, and Mike from about the inception of each of your channels, met James once. My rv experience is much different than your and those guys, we have come close to crossing paths and might one of these days. I remember your days in vans while in college and the lame ass threats in the comments, the lies and crazy things you put up with. Through it all you guys have prevailed, done it your way, Mike and James still at it though Sober came to a sad end. Many relationships came and went as well and many that have remained, enjoy watching all you do. Commented sometimes, sometimes just lurked in the background. Seen some good channels fade, new ones come and go, you are still going strong, great at editing, setting up shots, human interest stories. sort of a throwback to Charles Kuralt on the Road, CBS news. Keep it up. One of the most impressive of your friends is over in Quartzite and you saw him again, could not believe when he gave you that black van so you could get back home. Some great folks out there that you have met and shared life with. Kampervan Kevin pretty fine soul.

20+ years ago, I read an article in a magazine about Slab City and thought, “how cool! I want to spend a month or so there.” I had no clue how it was until RU-vid. As an artist at heart, I would still love to go (with a group) and spend a day. I met you and Tara at Lola (I was the lady with the two white dogs in a stroller). You may remember how shy they were, especially Daisy, due to a lifetime of abuse, but I wanted to share that as shy as Daisy is, about one month ago, she FINALLY began laying on my lap for the first time! I think Tara is really blossoming with Opie. I hope to meet up with you again some day and maybe get to play with Opie! I am meeting up with 8 ladies I met and befriended at Lola at the end of March to camp at Waco Lake. We are going to do all the touristy stuff there, then I and possibly one other of my group or going to Round Top, Texas for their big antiques fair. You never know, you might find some collectible Disney there!

There are people who live there that were formally homeless. I saw a video of one man who got sober and found a purpose to work on (forgot what,) built his own shelter and finally created a good life. Better than skid row in LA.
@shac9131
@shac9131 2 года назад
The place is extremely dangerous due to meth / crack heads, alcoholics etc, and the mentally insane. Plus the heat, no water, far trip to a store for food n gas, and folks dumping urine and poo and trash. Speaking with people who've visited, stayed, and watching a handful of videos... All say do not go unless you're with a group and folks staying by your van/ RV because folks will break in and steal. Expect to get into fist fights and arguments. Be extremely careful where to walk/ drive and areas semi ok to. They HATE folks videoing their place. Arrive with machine guns!! There is no way in hell I'd visit there for even 5 minutes! Because it's so extremely destructive, bad energy and your life is at a threat!

I think it would be extremely interesting to check out slab city and stay a few nights, but your comments about the people being "different" are spot on. Interesting personal history (& we tend to agree with your dad - but then we're traditional old folks!!!) Slab City is one we've not seen before (must be pre-Jax era) & the folks residing there are very resourceful/resilient. But your wanderlust has handsomely rewarded you - with the desire lifestyle & the perks of having cat kiddos - so congratulations! You forged ahead, with courage, & now you're living your dreams. Of course, much learning & hard work goes into this self-supportive venture. Tara is so sweet - giving way to you & then her little brother Opie. Safe & happy travels sir! thumbs up!

The Range has a youtube channel. I learned a lot about Slab City from Cornelius Vango's channel. They ran/renovated the library until taking off to travel for a while. There's a new caretaker and others that continue to renovate. The library has a huge fence around it to keep (some) people out and keep them safe. Check out Corn's older videos if you want to see the good, decent people who live at the slabs. it really isn't all bad, but there sure are a bunch of questionable folks. I really liked this video and your perspective on the slabs. Did people give you a hard time about filming? I heard through Cornelius's channel that you should ask permission before taking pictures or video or they might give you trouble.

My mom told me I was crazy and I would not like it my dad was like go for it. My mom is usually the one that tells me I can do it and my dad is usually the one saying don’t do it. 8 years later I’m working on owning my own big rig truck. I sleep in truck stops every night. It’s like camping in a different city every night. I have been around 1.3 to 1.5 million miles in 8 years. Do I miss not having roots somewhere yes do I wish I had kids yes but I have to do what makes me happy and I know when it’s time for me to get out of the truck I’m buying me a rv and just checking out cool places like slab city and Yuma az. As a parent, I can understand how your dad felt, worrying about their kids will never stop. Just keep in touch with them often. At least they can watch your videos now and know you're OK.

Mike and James, like them. Haven't seen them much lately, and wonder how they are. From what I've seen before, I would be a lil fearful to stay there without the proper protection. I know there are some good ppl there, some just down on their luck. Different lifestyle. I would definitely go check it out, some neat stuff. I find it pretty cool for you to go back and reminisce. I'm sure your Dad was like WTH, but you have done well for yourself. Proof that persistence, and work pays off. Be safe. 🙂👍

I just visited slab city a month ago, it was a weird experience. I didn't get out of the truck, I felt like I was being stared down constantly. Niland appeared to be a freaky little town

I watched your first trip to slab city & it was scary. I never thought you'd go back. And I'm surprised to know I've been on RU-vid for 8 years because you're the first video I watched & subscribed to. Time flies when you're living life & watching videos. Thanks for all the interesting places we've gone to. California dreamin' to you.

I wonder how many people, especially younger women, have gone to Slab City and never been seen or heard from again? I say this because, if you're ever unfortunate enough to reach that point in life where Slab City seems like a viable option, chances are that you have long passed the time when anyone would have even bothered looking for you if you just completely vanished.

There is a lot of crime and low life characters lurking around Slab City!

Shoot, I see the parody of the place in video games, and I get anxious of the idea of visiting the place in the middle of the day. I look roughed up and can blend in easily, but I couldn't fathom young women being willing to live there, unless they were forced to.

It's not as bad as most people think. LA and San Diego are much more dangerous.
@MarkRVillano
@MarkRVillano 2 года назад
@@NomadicZig With LA and San Diego, it's a matter of volume. But I believe that the low-life population on a strictly per capita basis is far higher in the Slabs.
@NomadicZig
@NomadicZig 2 года назад
@@MarkRVillano I sincerely doubt it. Having been in Slabs for 8 winters and seeing Venice and skid row, I'd take slabs 10 times out of 10
