I absolutely LOVE when a RU-vidr builds a TRUE junk journal out of JUNK!! Junk mail, tags, etc. I HATE to measure and I hate for my journal to look cookie cutter. REAL Junk journals will look different, unique as the Artist. THANK YOU for this video. These journals are not done enough.
I mean, junk journals reflect the artist in many ways. Mine would be really uncanny to me if it was trully messy, i'm an aspiring illustrator and i would consider myself an ambicious person(over achiever? Maybeeeee…), so i'm a perfectionist by nature since i was little, everything HAS to be as i imagine it, otherwise it rubs me off the wrong way, like, "this ain't right". That doesn't mean things have to look like in my head aaaaall the time, sometimes i improvise or make use of my head when it's empty to work a page without planning, but it will still look very "clean" and "polished" compared to a true junk journal or scrapbook, 'cause i'm that way, from my organization systems to my art journals and "messy" sketchbooks. Clean and neat, despite all my efforts of doing the opposite. I wished i could have a junk journal this free of self judgement and my own expections, but well, i can't. I'm a cookie cutter journal bun 😂
FYI... in returning to the Yogi tea, If you look at the tab that is attached to the string that you hang on to when you pull the tea bag out of the brewed tea, look at the underside of that tab. There are lovely little sayings to brighten your day or give encouraging words. I didn't discover this until a few days ago, and I've been drinking that tea for a long time.!!! I also like to fold these tabs in half and use them for tabs on the edge of a JJ page. (other than the tea, I use the tea bag itself, the string, and now the tabs. Freebies are wonderful..!! jo
Yes, you've got "the eye" now. But maybe you're going to wish that you didn't, at some point. If you live with others, they'll be wondering what you're bringing home 💜😉👍🏻
Shirt cardboards! When I was a kid in the '70s, my mom used to give me the white cardboard pieces that came with my dad's dress shirts. I loved to draw on them.
I did the same thing in the 90s :D Actually, we just replaced a set of sheets and I still have the cardboard pieces sitting on my desk, they're so crisp and have a satisfying texture. Since I've been learning more about official names for these paper crafts, I've been hesitant to let them go 😂
Very impressed you had time to junk journal when your kids were 3 and 5! I didn’t realize you had been doing this for so long-no wonder you are so good at it. This was a good reminder that graphic art is all around us! Personally obsessed with paint chips. Thank you ❤
I can see doing these as gifts for my friends in my watercolor class. Use some pages for ideas, and some blank pages of art paper. Thank you for the idea.
I love so much about this video, Margarete. I currently have my entire art room packed away due to a home renovation, and I'm itching to do something creative (but failed to keep out any supplies). Collecting for a junk journal and even starting some pages using totally free and found items is the perfect creative outlet for me right now! And I also love the idea of setting aside a journal where you don't get wrapped up in using the "good" stuff or creating a theme or making it "perfect". Sometimes the best ideas come from having no strings attached, no preconceived notions, no "precious" materials. When my kids were younger and I was traveling to sporting practices, I used to have a vintage travel case with a journal and all of the small snippets and cast-offs from past projects that were lying around on my desk. I loved sitting outside or in the car working on these little gluebooks while I waited. I'll have to revive that habit on my back porch. Thanks for such inspiring ideas!
I totally agree with you, Jean, having "no strings attached" is super liberating and allows your creative ideas to flow. I love that idea of a vintage travel case! I'd love to see a picture of it. Sounds intriguing 😉💜👏🏼
I love your stacking containers for on the go crafting! All the interesting books in other languages. That’s something I will start looking out for! Thanks for sharing your ideas and I really appreciate your tips and journals made from “recycled items”! They are amazing. 😊❤
Margarete - thanks for this totally comprehensive, inspirational tip-guide! Yes, I did get tons of "free" information from your video - that I will most certainly apply. ❤
Having accidentally dumped out traveling collage papers and tools far too many times, I finally arrived at Rubbermaid Brilliance and similar locking-type boxes. Having a flat working surface can be really nice. And they do stack nicely.
I did get tons of ideas from your video, thank you! What a lot of possibilities that I had never considered before, and your junk journal is fabulous. Thank you for a great presentation
Great reminders. I live in an apt. Always looking for interesting junk mail that others don't want, real estate magazines at the grocery store, so many things we would normally just walk past.
Sadly my post office no longer has a trash bin in the lobby. “someone” was afraid it was a good place to get personal info. So I can no longer get good free stuff from there. I’ve found neat stuff there in the past. My thinking is if it has any personal info, don’t toss it in public. ??
Awesome, thanks for the inspiration. I love that you didn't cover the cracker box. Youve inspired me. Thank you. Have a fabulous day. Sending big hugs Sherry ❤❤❤
Margarete: it looks like you and I shop at the same places. In fact, keeping organized with what I bring into my studio is somewhat of a job in itself. However, even that is fun for me. Good reminders for me. Thank you. Carol from California
Hello Margarete - Im from Germany and I always enjoy your videos! You gave such interesting new proposals for what is possible! Never ending new ideas ! I love your style and most the way to use anything in my house - everything around me - every little scrap or tiny bits and pieces. Thanx for your inspiration! 😍🤗⚘🍀🌻
Maps, great idea. Also travel brochures and those little touristy brochures at rest stops etc. My husband is not going to be pleased with the collection of "trash" I am about to amass, but we have clever ways of storing our crafts 😉
Hello thank you for the great information. I never thought about the post office. Our library has a magazine recycling area too but much smaller than yours. Thanks again for sharing.
I am so excited to have found your videos. This is a new idea for me. I have bits of papers etc. that I've been saving for "just in case". I have done scrapbooking and stamping and card making, but this will bring all of these pieces together. When I get more time after downsizing, I will be doing this. I can hardly wait!
Lol i thought FREE meant was a free day and to do whatever you felt like making that day. 😂😂😂 I have been a collector of clothes tags for some years now. There are so many cool ones! 😎 for the past 6 years i have been saving the drawings from my great niece and my son and i put them in my junk journals as pages i keep and consider done. I am big on nostalgia. 🎉 Thank you for sharing. 🌞
My mind has been blown by this. I have been hunting out guides with foreign language pages. Apparently, well, according to my other half, me claiming the pages in something Arabic from his power tool instructions manuals 50 pages past the English pages will mean the end of the world. 🙄 They will have to wait till he is out for me to rescue them 🤣
I love this journal!! It's validating seeing what you've put in here, I have old clothes tags, Dr Pepper labels, maps, etc and haven't had ideas on what to do with them. Thank you for sharing! I know exactly what to use my junk for now 💕💕💕
I do make my journals with the intention of actually journaling. I have a travel journal, an exercise journal, a food journal. Most recently I created a Faith journal. I do actually use my journals. I wonder how many people do create their journals to actually journal inside.
I love that you are using so much of it as is...i.e. the cracker box cover, the tea bags, the clothes tags. I’ve been saving all the same kinda stuff because I like it, but then so many others just cover it up first step. You have inspired me, thanks! And the Yogi tea boxes with the beautiful designs (I have several stashed for that very reason!!!)-- getting out my colored pencils as we speak 😊.
I recycle all the time. I'm one of those who will go thru the top layer of the recycle container 😅 When traveling, the information centers at rest stops have free maps and lots of colorful brochures you can pick up 😊 Great video, Margarite. Thanks for sharing 👍
I knew there were stamps in that tin as soon as I saw it!! I’ve been adding stamps to my collages & they are the perfect finishing touch. Also those user manuals with different languages, great idea! I’ll be saving those from now on. 😊
Hi Margarete! I just subbed! Yay! Anyway, I’m new to junk journaling and this kinda collaging, collecting sorta things. I’ve alway crafted but did more thrift flips and home decor type crafts. But just now I realized I’ve always done these sorts things just didn’t have a place for them that was as nice to look at, was in one place and organized. But I’ve been a scrape booker/junk journaler all along! Especially after watching your video about glue books! Who knew they were a thing? I’m late to the party! Oh well, better late than never right?! I enjoy your videos. See ya soon! ❤️💜💚
Margarete I really appreciate your videos, they are always insightful and inspirational. I do find that I relax a lot more when I use junk, because I am always worried that if I use my vintage papers and then change my mind later, I would have wasted them.
<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="956">15:56</a> WOW what a surprise when I saw the tickets. My valid ticket from 12.06.24 now costs 3.55 €, but that means that someone was in my city in 2015, how nice it is. Thanks for all the ideas you share with us. Ulla
Great video. Thank you so much for your hard work to bring it to us. Lots of good ideas and reminders of things but some new ideas that I hadn't thought of before one of my favorite things are closed tags. They work great for dangles but they also work as Journal cards are tags. Blessings and hugs from New Mexico
Hello Margarete new here, came over from jjj link. Love what you shared I love using paint chips and have a lot of hearts I punch out from the scraps-I really love the flower you made. I will try it today with a photo I’ve been trying to add in a different way. TFS. P.S. I could not get past your beautiful background/studio that I had to go search for a tour of it. 😂 😍
Another great vdeo! I try to use as much free stuff as I can. I often use food packaging for the base of my journal covers and then cover them with fabric. Thanks!
On one of my visits to Half Price Books, my car was parked by the trash bin. Of course I peeked in and it was full of book that they always say they will "recycle". There were a ton of children's books and a few other books I grabbed. It had started to rain and it broke my heart to know all those books would be ruined. HPB never gives you a good price to buy books to resell. But they throw out instead of donating.
To be honest, there are very few places they can donate books. Most libraries don’t have room for old books. And most recycling places don’t take books. Some places still do take them but, if they don’t have room where else can they go but into their trash. Especially if they are damaged or mildewed. It is a sad fact of life in the life cycle of books…
Sometimes, if I love a picture but it’s on a card that’s too thick, I “butterfly” cut it or peel the top picture layer off the top and try to leave behind as much of the card as possible.
Shhhhhhhhhhh.... Yes, you do know what it says...your google search bar, open camera in search bar, there should be an option to "Translate" in the photo/camera ...It's there. That's what I use to translate many books/pages before I use them! ;)
I tried that with the book from India. It couldn't translate the text for me. I've used it with other pages and it worked fine, I'm not sure why it didn't work this time. Thanks, though 👍🏻
Lovely work, Margarete. Just a question: I’m making a recipe junk journal as a gift for someone. What would you do to protect the cover from food stains/liquids etc from spills that may occur during use ie cooking plz? I’d really appreciate yr advice. Thank you. 😊❤
Good question! Maybe some kind of varnish, though not Mod Podge. Liquitex has a matte varnish that puts a nice protective coating. I’d coat it about 3 times. 👍🏼
Great ideas ❤ One question, why are you putting subtitles in the screen. It's a big black thing and now you can't see your artwork anymore. Bye from the Netherlands 👋⚘
@@MargareteMiller 1:29 when you span your desk talking about left over bits in your work space 🤩 it’s in the middle at the back of your desk- looks like auto correct changed my question: your roledex/memorydex card holder
Man, you can talk. Too much, maybe? I want to listen to your expertise, but you go on too much explaining things rather than showing how. Sorry, I will go somewhere else to watch. 😢 Blessings to you.
