I left the theater shocked. It’d been a while since seeing a movie that was just FUN. The cameos went over my 40 something head, but my son recognized them all. It’s amazing what Hollywood could still do if they decided to entertain us instead of preach at us.
Movies that have Ryan Reynolds as lead are a Seal of Guarantee. One of the few actors in Hollyweird that are against the narrative. Him and Denzel Washington. I know I'm missing a handful, but this will do for now.
It’s meant to be allegorical. NPC wakes up and becomes aware that he is part of a greater, increasingly violent program run for the pleasure/gain of others.
As a software dev, Dude's whole existence is one hilarious nod to my profession. "Remember guys, today is the day we get fired" is what every developer thinks when incomplete code is rushed into production because management long forgot (if they ever knew) how professionals write software. Dude's list of "I'm here to kick ass, TBD, and third thing here." with the placeholder text had me laughing harder than anyone else in the theater. Why? Because I've put that exact same kind of thing into my own code many times in the past. The writing in this film was surprisingly clever and my whole family left the theater laughing and remarking that it was the best film we'd been out to see in a long time.
yeah some of the best joy ever is when programmer comments/errors/etc get left in at production. there have been some hilarious gaffs over the years in gaming from it, but even more business focused you get some really funny shit that pops up now and then. Prob the favorite one i ever heard was a program my mom worked on years back and her co-worker had left as one of the "errors" that he had coded in. So program goes into production, users start using it...then all of a sudden IT department is getting a call from a user because "the program is insulting me". What did the error say? "you are an idiot". See they (the co-worker) KNEW in order to get that error one would have to have done something welll...dumb. no reason for a user to do that set of actions, so they had set it there as a placeholder...and just forgot. Needless to say the error had to be changed, but yeah good fun. Also love some of the just at this point kind of meme list that gets shared around of ridiculous programmer comments people have found over the years. though imo the all time king for forever is "When i started coding this only god and i knew what i was doing. Now god only knows." You see a comment like that you know tracing any function is about to be a bitch and a half.
"The writing in this film was surprisingly clever and my whole family left the theater laughing and remarking that it was the best film we'd been out to see in a long time." Agree wholeheartedly. The only real pain points for me were the overt "what Hollywood thinks games look like" shit, like the absolutely godawful UI elements when Guy puts on the glasses, which were both 20 years out of date and insanely exaggerated, and Taika's portrayal of a weird evil hippie gaming executive. I mean the evil part wasn't necessarily wrong, but they wear suits!
@@LucefieD yeah i thought that too, set up their own rule then ignored it lol, also bothered me a bit when taika started axing the server room, the odds that one server could keep it going was a bit too much suspension of disbelief for me I felt like they should have written a better way around that but I guess the visual of axing servers was good for non tech savvy audience I just thought to myself nope that wont just neatly break assets thats like a whole bunch of code gone and anyone whos tried to code knows how bad to have tiny errors how bout losing 80% of the data yea no.. I'm also surprised Critical Drinker missed the parallels to The Truman Show, it even had the ocean wall and audience cheering on as he headed for the exit, basically it borrowed from so many movies but did so in a lighthearted fun way so all is forgiven despite being another cash grab template movie really

That's too bad. Not all Oscar movies are as good or fun as this movie. Just went over the Oscar list and I could name so many movies that I didn't even bother to watch cause they didn't seem interesting enough. Free guy made 277 million world wide. Whereas Judas and the black messiah bombed with only 7 million world wide. And that movie got 2 Oscar's. Did you watch that movie? I didn't..
Yeah right, like being worthy of an "Oscar" is any kind of valid litmus test nowadays. Have you seen the kind of trash that earns Oscar nominations and accolades now? Forgettable garbage. Imo "not going to win any Oscars" is more of a compliment than an insult. smh.

I finished it thinking that's exactly what the world needed right now, just the perfect combination of feel good and dumb to make a stressed out planet happy for an hour and a half.
Everyone saying Ryan Reynolds portraying himself in the same movies is exaggerating a bit. Yeah his sarcastic quips are fundamentally Ryan Reynolds style humour. In the last 5 years, the only characters that he has played that are virtually the same is Micheal Bryce from The Hitman's Bodyguard and Nolan Booth in Red Notice. (Maybe Victor Locke from Hobbs & Shaw if you want to include that cameo.) But other than that, the only similarities that his characters have shared, is the underpinnings of the humour.
@@shona5512 name a memorable character he has portrayed over the last 10 years that differs at all from what he usually does? Cringe, obvious and sarcastic humour really gets played out when your one note.
Instead of bitter old man screaming for kids to get off his lawn, its sorto sweet, caring older gentelmen who playfully shoos you away. I guess even Drinker has a softer side.
Can really hear how much he enjoys a movie based on the tone he's using to tell people to fuck off. After the "Star Wars" trilogy he sounded devastated.
I’d watch this except the cameos from random nobody woke streamers is too much of a turnoff. But I will say it’s nice to hear there actually is some new stuff coming out that isn’t ragingly woke.
I couldn't disagree more. It's like Melissa McCarthy, it just gets repetitive and boring after a few movies. He got successful with deadpool where he really shined but then decided he'd just act like deadpool in every movie he does and it's just.. sort of sad. Especially when people like you are like "wow! A one trick pony! More please!!!!" Same goes for the music industry too, that's the reason music sounds like crap now, they realised people liked the experimental auto tune sound and said "oh you like that huh? Well here, have nothing but that, infact screw it, robotize the instruments too!" And on and on it goes, and it's all because of people like you.
I liked that Guy could see the original game island on his window blinds because Antwan made the island invisible but forgot to eliminate reflection effects. An actual in-story way to progress the plot that made sense and fits with the lazy tendencies of some programmers.
I always thought Free Guy had that 'LEGO Movie' vibe to it, with Guy being very similar to Emmet. A guy who thinks he is normal and has a similar routine every day, until realising he is more than that.
The lego movie/free guy A movie about a normal guy who does the same routine everyday and gets coffee and works in the same job while being seen as normal until he meets a action pact girl who he falls in love with and learns that the world he is living in is actually all just entertainment for kids and its all controlled by a business man, and the climax of the movie is the business man destroying and ripping apart the city
I think Dude was used a decent amount. Any more of him would have been an overkill in my opinion. Other than that, I agree with everything else. It was a pretty wholesome feel-good movie😊
Yeah this was like a really well-made dish, everything was in just the right quantity, not too salty, sweet, or spicy. It's been a while since I said "wow I'm so glad I watched this" as the credits rolled, such a good feeling
I agree, but one way they could have had more Dude was if they put him into the game/world earlier, but instead of going after Guy like the fucking Terminator he just stumbles around in the background because he is still only a half-finished program. The end plays out much the same though as It's only when Guy is literally cornered as the world disintegrates around them that Dude actually catches up with him.
Who else appreciated that most of it was shot in day-time matter-of-factly, rather than night-time with filters and effects to make it more "cool" or "computer-gamey"? Everything looked so good, compared to the too-dark CG-nightmares of the 2010's
Saw this show with my gaming-illiterate dad and we both had a great time, walking out of the theater agreeing that it was the best movie we had seen in a while. Free Guy manages to clear the biggest hurdle a gaming movie faces: being enjoyable by non-gamers. Yeah, he missed a number of jokes and references, but there were still plenty of other jokes he could appreciate, and, as you noted, the story can speak to anyone.
Man, that's so awesome. Theaters should bring friends and families together for a fun shared experience. It's hard to remember what that's like and refreshing when you see it.
Surpsiingly good, really. Not amazing by any Stretch, but in this Quality-Drought we live in, its above average for sure. We need more in this 'direction', but with much less S-Jokes, duh.
It was honestly such a good movie. Went to see it with my family and the whole car ride home people kept yelling “CATCHPHRASE!” Fun movie, not preachy, and honestly had more compelling characters than most Hollywood movies these days
Lol remember the fat naked guy eating a cheese sandwich while controlling a hot woman avatar in Gamer? Thought they were gonna do something similar for sure.
Hey they wanted to make the movie watchable. If it was realistic, no one would watch or spend money on Free Guy at all. Because no one wants to watch a movie about fat overweight white privileged online gamers living in their parent's basement.
@@edr3158 I mean, South Park did it with an antagonist and it is one of their most beloved episodes. I still chuckle when I think of the line "How do you kill that which has no life?"
Coincidentally this movie is one of the best performing box office wise in the pandemic. Could this possibly be due to it just trying to be entertaining rather than pushing the "MESSAGE"
@James Brennan yeah that's what i just commented, apart from few random SJW lines that i honestly couldn't tell if it was ironic or not was a fun movie, oh yeah and just remove Pokimane and Ninja ffs, save the viewer some unneeded watch time.
@James Brennan Oddly enough, there's a certain subversion to the 'white privilege' joke since once you know the full story, it's a comment that's coming from a guy who doesn't know what's going on to a guy who very much didn't benefit from his mythical 'male privilege'.
As of today Sept 16th, 2021 the best Hollywood guess is Free Guy is only about $7 million in the hole and pulling about $500k a day in weekday box office take. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that this movie does better than break even by the end of it's theatrical run. With some real profits in PPV and Blue-Ray sales.
The credits started rolling a few moments ago and honestly, I feel the same. I didn't really know what to expect going in, but I found myself hesitantly enjoying it until I realized that I could actually relax and actually enjoy it. Near the end I found myself actually smiling and laughing without thinking about it, which is pretty rare these days. All-n-all, it was a good movie and I give the filmmakers credit for being able to pull off a movie with so many opportunities to crap all over people, but just being... well, a good guy.
I actually teared up a little, from smiling. It was heart-warming and also I'd just spent a couple days gaming, so it was a nice thematic capper on the weekend. (I'm proud to say I never "griefed" any other players, I'm a good guy online haha)
Guy is the most likeable, lovable protagonist I've seen in years, & his relationship with Buddy is the most wholesome thing ever. Didn't think 2021 was capable of making feel-good movies anymore 😌💞.
@@andrewbowles9931 Yeah, there were 2 or so moments that felt on-the-nose to me, but you'd have to get really worked up about it to let it ruin your whole experience. It's still way better in comparison to everything else woke we're seeing.
@@andrewbowles9931 like what? Cuz I didn't notice any. They covered some video game developers being scummy. The idea of not abusing NPCs was a stupid talking point because many games have had great positive NPC interactions (Dark Souls, MGS4, Overcooked).
I came into this movie with absolutely no idea about anything beyond the main actor and my brother and I were losing our shit as the seemngly innocuous opening sequence felt like a superhero/spy combo parody or just some just utterly surreal experience, that slowly revealed more and more, till we learned who guy really was. I genuinely enjoyed every minute of the movie (that wasn't plastered with influencers), especially the moments me and my family all got to laugh together.
Same here, had no idea it was about video games at all. Funny thing is, I don't even remember the bit with influencers in it and would never have guessed they were actual people rather than characters. I guess that means I cannot be influenced haha.
I loved it and my 70-year-old dad, who's a complete noob when it comes to online gaming (and even gaming in general), was able to keep up with it and liked it too. It was a good, fun movie. It is definitely one of those movies that I will add to my Blu-ray collection.
Sounds weird, but one thing that stood out to me was they went the extra mile to show a game render whenever things happen in the real world. It’d have been so easy to just super impose the footage and pretend graphics are so good it all looks real, but they actually put in a bit of effort in a direction many people may not notice, but it helps things feel more authentic.
@@MajinHarris no kidding. So much horrible crap has knocked him down. Good to hear the bit of joy again.....odd thing to say "for go away now". But it holds true, lol

“It was a movie I could just enjoy” Felt the exact same way. The movies I’ve watched in the past couple years seem to be poorly written and tend to take themselves too seriously with real world cultural problems. But I found myself zoned out (in a good way) just enjoying a pleasant comedy giggling along with the theater.
@@seditt5146 I asked, actually. I also have another question; is that stick up there because it hits your g spot, or is it just so deep that doctors refuse to operate? On second thoughts don't answer that, idgaf
"How much Ryan Reynolds you can tolerate" they should make that the tagline. Let's face it any comedy starring Mr. Reynolds is basically Deadpool re-skinned.
Damn, seeing this and the comments is the best endorsement for a movie I've heard of in the past decade. I know what I'm doing when I feel like watching a movie.
Entertainment. That's what I used to pay for when I went to the movies. Just tell me a decent story involving characters I can give a damn about. Show some visuals that can transport me out of real life and take me back to once upon a time or to a galaxy far, far away. I'm not shelling out $13.50 to be lectured about how misogynistic, transphobic racism is impacting the livelihood of left-handed lesbian dentists with tonsil polyps. I really, really like how it has the clever moral dilemma about AI without shouting it in your face. It leaves to to think about it another time with some tea (or some beers) and go: yeah, that stuff in free guy was pretty interesting to get deeper into. It also proves that having a strong theme, asking a deep question or whatever else you want to do with a movie needs to be everything the movie is. I myself find it difficult to enjoy a movie that doesn't stir the mind on some level. A movie without a message is fine, but not quite as fun for me. Sadly, the movies with interesting concepts today tend to fall so flat in it's execution, and/or just fail at being a good film. Really glad to find you addressing this.
I will admit that, when I was young, messaging of any sort ruins any given story. Only later would I start to recognise their uses, but only as a means to maintain coherence and as potential inspirations for plots.
For any of you who dont work in the video game industry, this film's real world drama and personalities were VERY REALISTIC. Thats VERY MUCH how game companies work, and how artists, programmers and QA all get screwed while doing all the hard work, and how their offices look. And they douchebag in charge is TYPICAL. These people did their homework. Great movie, great review.

Yeah, but it looks like Nada got his Bubble Gum back. I saw this movie with my 65 year total non-gamer dad and while he admitted to not getting alot of the gaming elements he thought it was pretty awesome! 😁👍🥰
Agreed, Free Guy seems like a testament to what happens when you just put in the baseline level of effort to make a good story and let the entire creative and producing team have fun making it. It's also a great example of how to apply what makes franchises successful to one-off stories without sacrificing originality.
Meh. Maybe is just me, but the fact that all of them were computer program made me not care about any of them at all. I can appreciate the effort though.
To be 22 and live at your parents house is so normal in East Europe. I know a bunch of 35 years old guys that are living with their parents because they can't find a decent job.
I just watched this and belly-laughed multiple times. So many little details for a mid-20's gamer like myself. Felt like they understood gaming culture and made a hilarious movie. Would watch again. Glad I gave it a chance.
I smiled and laughed throughout the movie. Had to look to my 13 yr old daughter to get the YT/Twitch cameos ("I assume you know how they are?" ... she was almost embarrassed to admit she did). She went to see it again with a friend a few days later. The first movie she has done that for. I'd watch again, in theaters, in a heartbeat. "Catchphrase"
I think one of the things that impressed me the most was the stakes. Where there are two worlds, virtual and real sometimes it’s hard to try and create equally compelling but different stakes on both sides. The fact that the film manages this by it being their programme and yet the NPC’s lives was really good. It’s the best film I’ve seen at the pictures this year.
I was surprised with the depth of the movie to be honest. There is a bit of a twist with how and why the programming was done the way it was done. Not a bad movie, but dragged a bit in parts.
There are very few stars that do anything but play 'themselves'. Even Clint Eastwood is Clint in almost every film he does. That's the difference between an actor and a star.

I remember walking into this movie almost dreading the idea of some writer screwing up a fun idea of a movie with modern politics and whatnot. When I left, I felt like I had taken a breath of fresh air for the first time in a long time. It was so nice to see a movie that just wanted to be a movie, and not someone’s soapbox for ____
What I loved most was that it was really about two friends. He didn't get the girl, he got his friend which is really what he wanted. He even beat the end bad guy by showing him the world and not by beating the sausages out of him.
This movie was perfect. It wasn't trying to be serious it was trying to be sweet we need more movies like this that have hearts effort put behind them and are r just fun
Kevin Hart - Like Ryan Reynolds - only knows how to play the character of "Kevin Hart". I think he would have been too distracting and I like the guy that they got.
I'd say narratives about self-discovery and self-improvement are in many ways diametrically opposed to agenda-driven narratives about how oppressed someone is. One is about blaming everyone else, the other is taking responsibility for yourself. Now, they don't HAVE to be complete opposites - oppression, racism, what have you does exist, and it's perfectly possible to acknowledge this while still enjoying stories about self-improvement. But it seems like the concept of "victim blaming" and its variants have made it impossible to point out that despite whatever -isms might be at work in society, your own efforts are also going to play a significant role in where your life goes.
Racism was a word invented by Leon Trotsky to brow beat Slavic farmers into giving their land to the state. Now it's just an ad hominem attack used to shut up Europeans.
Also, whatever -isms might be at play are directly influenced or encouraged by how we live and take responsibility for our choices... So shifting blame outwards is the perfect way to keep those -isms in place. Pandering and cuddling those who keep doing such a thing can either do nothing to solve their problems or even replace those problems with different, potentially worse ones.
@@Tom-zc9gs Also great points. Of course, social structures and life opportunities will also influence statistically how people choose to live their lives (biologically speaking, environmental factors affect living creatures; it's pretty obvious). Point is it's stupid to choose to only focus on one of the two, because there is always room for improvement, both in society in general and for individuals.
Being from an older generation where blaming someone else for your problems was seen as weak and pathetic I have to agree that victim virtual signaling ruins everything and gets in the way of not only narrative development but personality development as well.
Lol, this synopsis reminds me of my experience in Rust. In a game where screwing your neighbor and stealing their stuff was the expectation, I started fish-farming factories to feed the people with free delivery service, started a 'safe-trade arena' where players who trusted me could trade with eachother without fearing betrayal (all trades being heavily gated and turret-defended), and even eventually started a server wide initiative to keep the roads lit at night.
I liked how the villain acted like a rockstar in public (or his lame idea what a rockstar is) but in private he was far more business like and ruthless. Like he was hiding behind a semi-cool persona but actually was far more cold in his mind.

@@scifiwriter98 I just watched the movie and there definitely was an agenda. The difference is that the agenda was pushed in a different way and was quite a bit more sudle than it usually is in modern film. I can say I appreciate that nothing was too overt but at the same time though it wasn’t teaching to support LGBT or even exeptance to an extent the underlying message of the story is that the world is oppressive and that we have the potential as people to achieve an utopia through individualism and letting people do what they want. The main point is that society is oppressive and people are naturally good and all society is doing is limiting good human nature. I do agree with this partially, the system isn’t perfect and I believe certain things in modern society should be changed but that’s not the point of the film especially looking at the end where it is basically an anarcho communist utopia.
